Is there a difference between MAX232 IC and MAX232CPE? Answered

I'm finding the parts to build the 8x8x8 LED cube by Chr but I need to get the MAX232 integrated circuit. I looked for it on eBay and found some called MAX232CPE. The author only listed MAX232 and I want to know if there is a difference between these two ICs. I also found some on eBay that ended in ESE and N. I'm new to building electronics and any help is appreciated. :)

Use the MAX 202CPE instead - it needs smaller caps, so it takes less space on your board.

In this case, the letters at the end tell you what package/case style the IC comes in. IE how many pins, surface mount or through hole, its temperature rating and what size/shape.

The CPE is a 16 pin DIP (dual inline package) suitable for through hole/breadboard use with a temp range from 0 to 70C.

The other kinds are listed in the MAX232 datasheet:

So as long as the IC has 16 pins and is through-hole I can use it? All of the ones I listed are that.

Thanks for helping. I think I'll order the MAX202CPE. It seems to be the cheapest on eBay.
