Is there an instructable for modding a Credit card reader into a Usb card reader? or is this impossible without adruno? Answered

I have a VeriFone Omni 396 Credit Card terminal, I want to Mod it so i can use it as a Usb card reader and if possible, use the keypad but the keypad is only an option. So can i turn the reader into a USB reader without adruno or do i have to have it?

If this machine has a serial port on it, you might hook it up as easily as using a USB-to-Serial adaptor cable. Also, the Arduino platform (actually an Atmel AVR-series microprocessor in a pre-defined environment) is definitely not the only microprocessor you could use, therefore it is not required. If you do use a microprocessor, you'll have to create firmware, and then device drivers, for it, so it won't be a small project.

i have never seen an instructable for what you want. i will assume you have seen some of the ardion based ones however. you could make the controller, basing the hardware of of boarduino, and then code using the arduino ide. it does have a serial port, so you might be able to connect to that, with hyperterminal. otherwise it is a modem only device.

Dunno, would have to see the circuitry. If it's connecting directly to the phone line, you're probably out of luck (or rather, if you have to ask, you can't do it). If it connects to a standard serial port, you may be able to connect it via a USB-attached serial adapter -- but you'd still have to find out/figure out what kind of protocol it speaks.
