Yes there are several ways to sense people or other alive things. One nice way is to use Capacitive Proximity/Touch sensing. Quantum Research makes a line of good easy to use cheap ICs for that purpose. I have used the QT113 and the QT110 and they can sense humans through things as well with only one capacitor needed. Digikey.com has this line of products. Good luck buddy.

This amazing table saw is all I've seen. Pretty simple technology.

I've also found that the new trackpad on Macbooks only responds to flesh. Well... toes and fingers is all I've tried. I'm sure they have a much more software-based method than the saw.

human skin has resistance, so maybe measure it with a multi meter?
