Is tubing used in fish tank air pumps "food quality" tubing, like a drinking straw? Answered

I'm wanting to use some (new) plastic tubing that is used with fish tank aquarium air pumps as a drinking straw but I don't know if it is safe "food quility" plastic.

How about the plastic tubing used for oxygen machines?  Is that safe to use for a drinking straw?

I'm trying to make a cheap hydration system to use while kayaking so it keeps my hands free to paddle.

It's usually PVC, which will be fine for your purposes. PVC gets inadvisable for hot water / steam / alcohol / oil (none of which you'd be taking kayaking) which can strip plasticisers from the tubing.
You'll be safe.

Ok, now for part #2 of this question. IF I was going to use this drinking tube or straw for hot beverages/alcohol/oil where would I locate tubing and needed connections?
I would like to thank each of you for taking time to reply to my questions as I appreciate everyone’s assistance.

PTFE is good stuff, it's used in laboratory kit for solvents and you can get Swagelok fittings for it.

Polypropylene may be a better cheaper option though.

Just go to your local home improvement store and look in the plumbing section for tubing marked "safe for potable water", and you'll be fine. It'll be cheaper than buying it at the aquarium store, it'll be available in more sizes, there will be fittings right next to it that you can use to assemble your device, and it'll be sold by the foot so you only buy as much as you need.

I agree with lemonie, just wash it out really well before you use it since it's not been cleaned for use by humans.

I don't know if it is called food quality, but it is certainly non-toxic.  Wash it in hot soapy water and you'll be fine.
