Didn't your teacher explain that sentences shouldn't start with but or because?
Because mine didn't.
But it's OK.
Reply 10 years ago
Apparently, English is an evolving language.
But we all know what American education has to say about evolution... ;-)

But we all know what American education has to say about evolution... ;-)
I think you're confusing America with the Bible Belt...
Reply 10 years ago
It was a joke - I put a significant pause and a winking thing on the end of it and everything.
Reply 10 years ago
So was mine - I just didn't throw in a "winking thing".

Evolution is only a theory remember Kiteman, it should not be taught as fact. I do believe that the english curriculum explains teaching it as a theory as well.
Reply 10 years ago
Oh, I do hope you had your tongue in your cheek when you typed "only a theory"...
Reply 10 years ago
not at all, natural selection is a proven fact, however evolution remains a theory.
Reply 10 years ago
natural selection is a form of evolution, I just learned it two years ago. If you really want me to throughly explain it, reply to this comment.
Reply 10 years ago
It ok n8man, surprisingly i did learn about this at school, and then in further education, aswell as studiying it somewhat off my own back. I think you will find that natural selection is key to evolution, not a form of. natural selection is what it is.

Oh, I know it's a theory, it's the "only" bit - that's the sort of dismissive semantic trick that YECs try and use to demote the status of evolution from a solid scientific basis, supported by millions of pieces of evidence gathered through the application of countless thousands of man-years of labour.
In science, an idea that might explain a phenomenon or process is only promoted to a theory after huge amounts of work; data-collection and analysis.
Technically, evolution is a theory, and "creation science" is an unsupported hypothesis.
Evolution is only a theory in the same way that gravity is only a theory.
Yes, I know it's a rant, you might have noticed I'm sensitive about this.
Reply 10 years ago
i dont kno what a YEC is, but i understand the problems within religion. I am a religious person, but i hate it when people dismiss science, and treat the bible too literally. eg - creation stories. Personally, ive only founds the answers when using both religion and science. Not just the one, i mean think about it, if someones believes in God, then they have to believe in the laws he made! eg gravity physics, etc..
Reply 10 years ago
YEC = Young Earth Creationist - they take the whole Bible as literal truth, including the Genesis story, and believe that the Bible's timeline is complete and accurate, which means the entire universe is a touch over 6000 years old.
If I drew maps with the same level of accuracy and fidelity, New York would be closer to me than the back of my chair, and the whole of the United States would fit in my school's yard.

I hope he was joking.
Reply 10 years ago
Was...uh...was that a joke?
Reply 10 years ago
It's all going to be OK, the English language is composed of words that Chuck Norris let live.
Reply 10 years ago
Don't use contractions.
Reply 10 years ago
Do not* :D

Oh, whatever. :D
Reply 10 years ago
Sure is only one u bumpus.
Reply 10 years ago
You can, you just have to have 2 dependant clauses that you're connecting.
But without the pen, we could not write; with it, we can fight.
Feel free to correct my grammar on that... but I'd consider it to be correct.
Reply 10 years ago
What exactly did you change?
Also, just curious, is it Instructables users or Instructables' users? On one hand, you have a compound noun of sorts, and on the other users of Instructables
Reply 10 years ago
Compare bumpus' original post and my italicised version.
The apostrophe goes on the end of users, vis: "the spelling mistakes belonging to those who use Instructables".
Reply 10 years ago
I did compare them, and couldn't find a difference...
I'm not arguing the users' part, I'm wondering about the phrase "Instructables(') users"
Reply 10 years ago
Pardon me whilst I slap myself on the forehead, then hunt down bumpus and do the same to him, but more violently.
He has, of course, edited his original post to match my corrected version.
Subtle little rat, isn't he?

So it ISN'T my brain playing tricks on me! I stared at the two posts for the better part of five minutes, trying to figure out what the difference was. I even compared them letter for letter!

Hyper-win.

Oh dear. So this is where it started. :P I've given up on the internets in regards to spelling and grammar. When I was a mod on IGN I'd edit posts so they were correct. Now I don't care anymore. I can't wait to see a member of this group tell someone "your a idiot, you spelled K'NEX wrong!!" :D
