Making it more powerful? Answered

Hi,

I have brought a sphero 2.0 which for those who don't know it a robotic ball about the size of a baseball. I decided to try and make a car for it out of knex although I will only be able to make it go backwards and forwards. I built a frame thing with a small wheel in the middle of it and sphero sits on top. The axle that the wheel is on has a gear which then connects to the drive wheel axles on the back using another gear. This works fine when in the air but when on the ground it's too heavy for sphero to power it. I've tried putting bigger gears on the front and vice versa, i've also tried using a pulley but it just isn't budging at all.

Say if I was using the standard knex motors how would I go about making it produce more power?

Gear it. Its your best option. By gearing something it increase the torque depending on the difference in the gear ratios

For example

small gear --------> big gear = increase in torque

big gear ----------> small gear = increase in speed#

Get the picture?

A good example of gearing for speed is shown here. This is from one of my own 'Ibles: my K'nex whisk

yup, gear it down like this, the more you gear it down, the slower it is but therefor you'll have more power :)

I'm having a hard time picturing exactly your setup for the car. Would you mind adding some pictures? I understand what the sphero 2.0 is. But, if you wanted to make a car for it, I'm not sure why you would need a motor because isn't the purpose to have the sphero 2.0 power it?

I don't have a motor. I was just saying it so it could be understood better. IF it was a motor powering it rather than sphero how would you go about increasing it's power.

Ah, I'm not actually sure. I know there are some forums on how to do it but I couldn't give you a direct answer.
