Mobile pc communications Answered

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so i'm sorry if its not. I am looking to control a set of switches using an old mobile phone connected to my PC. Sending a text message to the phone would let you do various things depending on the text message content. I don't even know if this would be possible but it is something I am looking to do and this seems to be one of the solutions (if possible) to what I need to do. If anyone else can help me with a way to control anything remotely without a wireless Internet connection, possibly even if its only 3G/EDGE/HSDPA Thanks

It would probably be much easier to set up the wireless connection, and just interface directly with your PC (and not through the phone). The USB port offers a lot of different options depending on one's needs.

You could get some inspiration maybe from The list of USB ibles here

Depending on the abilities of the old mobile phone a dial in through say a VPN or maybe through a RAS set up

Thanks for your reply, I think you've mis-understood my question and I can possibly see why after reading back over it so I apologise for that. I need to control these switches remotely from pretty much anywhere without an internet connection. I was hoping that I would be able to text a command or similar to the phone and have it connected to a pc that could read the message from the phone. Alternative to that if theres any way to get cellular comms on a pc without the need for a phone.

I am currently unaware of any way to do this without your phone being able to contact the computer directly, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way :-)
