Movie Recommendations? Answered

My friends and I all realized that there are a lot of relatively recent movies that none of us had seen. We're now trying to watch as many of them as we can. For example, last night we watched Fight Club. We were wondering if anyone on Instructables has any good recommendations, or anything similar to discuss.

V for Vendetta A great film, not at all what most people expect it to be.

That's a great movie, and one of my favorite books of all time.

Oh, how could I forget that movie! It's one of the best movies I've seen! *At Gjdi3: It's a book? Was the movie based off of the book, or vise versa? Either way, I'm getting it.

It was originally a graphic novel by Alan Moore (the same guy who wrote Watchmen). I like the novel way more than I liked the movie, but they were both great.

Hmm... not recent, but:
  • Black Hawk Down.
  • Reservoir Dogs.
  • Independence Day.
  • The Island.
  • The Rock.

Recent:
  • Taken.
  • Gran Torino.
  • Knowing (purely for special effects, plot was terrible).

I know I'm forgetting a few great ones.

Hmm, Death Race was pretty good. Oh, yea, and 28 Days/ Weeks Later.

I cant get enough of the movie 21

I didn't really like the movie, but the story itself is worthwhile. America has a unique relationship with our traveling-couple spree-killers.

-WHat's eating Gilbert Grape? -American History X -Gummo

Thanks for the recommendations!

They are not "light viewing". And none of those are "Sunday school material". And don't watch "Gummo" if your sensitive or squeamish. (My sister's boyfriend actually knew several of the people involved in that film.

It's funny that you mentioned gummo. Last year it was recommended to my same group of friends by someone else. He recommended it on the basis that it was set (or filmed, I can't remember) somewhere near our town. I'll have to check it out.

I think it was based on a small town in Ohio. But it was filmed in Nashville, TN. My sisters friend (I don't think he's still a "boyfriend"), grew up around that neighborhood, and knew a few of the locals who acted in it.

-Crank (2006)
-George Romero's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Dead
there are 3 remakes the dawn of the dead remake is great, I havn't seen the other two, I've heard their crap though
-The Resident Evil Trilogy (ignore the 4th it's cgi and lame)
-Hot Rod
-The Die hard Quadrilogy
-28 weeks later
-28 months later
-The Evil dead Trilogy (remake of the first this year XD)
-Into the wild
-Transporter (you'll like the second if you like the first)
-The Matrix trilogy
-Eraserhead (just so you can say that you watched it)
-Scarface
-Grindhouse Planet Terror
-The Men Behind The Sun (one of the goriest films ever, I believe one scene to be real)
-The Poughkeepsie tapes (this is messed up... bad)
-The Breakfast Club
-Quarantine

Haha, I think I'm going to watch it. That's an awesome line.

It's a great clip! But remember this is Peter-Lord-of-the-Rings-Jackson - there's a good story, dialogue, characterisation etc. Bad Taste is also good but very low budget.

Vantage Point is a good one, if you can tolerate the... rewinding.

Haha, the rewinding really is the key to whether you think it's a good movie or not. I didn't mind it, so I liked the movie a lot. My brother on the other hand was put off by the rewinding so he really didn't like it.

Gattaca Hot Shots (1 and 2)

It's not recent, but do watch Videodrome (also anything else by David Cronenberg that you can find)

Sounds interesting. Thanks!

Oh it is - not light viewing though, but thought-provoking. Existenz is similar but newer and shinier (and Debbie Harry doesn't get her top off and stub a cigarette-out on herself in it...)

  • Shawn of the Dead
  • Hancock
  • Casino Royale / Quantum of Solace
  • Anything that starts Indiana Jones and...

The original Casino Royale, I thought the new remake was numptyish.

Haha, the Indiana Jones movies have to be my favorites of all time. Did you see the new one? Oh and thanks! I just remembered that I haven't seen Quantum of Solace.

Indie is a big favourite here, too. We have all four on disc, and they get a lot of play.
