My cable connection is eating all my internet spead why? Answered

Il try to explain my problem as detailed as i can ...

It all started about 4 months a go wen i got a new pc and gave my old pc to my dad ... he went for cabled connection wile i had a wireless device .... after 2-3 weeks my internet conection started to work rly rly bad from tests of 12-14 mbs to 2-3 mbs , you couldnt do more then stay on messenger or stuff like that ... i had no idea what happend ... what my dad did , so i bought a second wireless device and that worked ... internet on both pcs was working well . After a wile one wireless device broke .. so i just reinstaled his windows and his cable connection and my wireless were working up well .... its been a month since i instaled his windows ... and now for about a week everything is like in the beggining , my wireless is working rly rly bad wile his cable connection is working pefectly ... im rly clueless on wot his did to manage this ....
We both have windows 7 , his pc is a hp mine is made out of parts .

Just so you get a idea about my dad ... all he dose is watch tv on pc and play games on facebook ... so i dont see him able to go into controll panel and change some important options ... or log into the router and change stuff from there ......

Have you tried both going wireless? Some cable/internet technologies piggyback off each other (sorry I don't recall what the name of it was), and send TV/phone data on the same line. Perhaps, the modem is giving your dad's computer higher preference. You should also note that an ethernet connection is going to be much faster than a wireless connection in most cases.

doesn't mean there isn't something there, especially if it's a root kit.

Does your dads PC have any bittorrenting software installed? When I am running torrents, they suck the life out of my connection.

Well i dont rly see it as a problem with a virus or streaming something becose wen we had 2 wireless devices it worked perfectly , so im rly thinking its something from the rooter or the cable that my dad is using .

Streaming media. Streaming media really sucks up bandwidth and a few IPs will choke down the bandwidth if a predetermined limit is exceeded and then open it up again once a cooling down time is met.
