I just checked the contest page, and the only date that is displayed, is the entry deadline date (which I think is the most important date). Contests typically take about a week to judge and finalize (unless it's a huge contest), so I think that date is fairly redundant.

Do you really want to know the when it's being voted on, when it's being judged, when judging is finalized, and everything else?  Or is the one date okay?  If you want the bonus dates, I'll be happy to bring it up and ask about them, just let me know which specific ones you really want.

Matt, transparency should always be the default policy. Users should not have to guess or infer important information, deadlines, or processes. The fact that people have to ask about this (and do ask, many times), should be a signal that the information is useful and important. Equally so, the eligibility requirements (international vs. parochial, new I'bles or old, and so), should be stated right up front, on every single contest, even if they're always the same. They shouldn't be hidden in the "official rules" fine print.

To your points.
 - Transparency is good, including the other dates will happen soon. Hopefully even today.
 - Users haven't had to guess. The deadline is prominent on the contest pages. More so than before even. The other dates are included in e-mails sent to everyone who has an entry accepted in the contest.
 - I checked all of the current contests and have not seen anyone ask about the dates. I also haven't received any messages as such. I haven't had time lately to read the forums, however.
 - International eligibility has always been on the section called "Contest Info." That's not exactly fine print. The "How to Enter" section mentions the eligibility period. To make sure the point comes across, we can repeat that info across both of those sections.

With the new contest system in place and many new contests starting up we've been playing a little bit of catch up in implementing many of the things that we've been planning. We've been a bit hectic behind the scenes here and do appreciate the comments as it helps us see if we've missed anything.

Ah, the other dates are in e-mails to entrants! That's why I couldn't find them when I looked. I did have a hard time finding the deadline date myself (even just now), but I see that instead of being in the tabbed info, it's up in the contest title banner. That's a great place for it, I think; thanks!

We've been seeing questions like this in the fora, and also occasionally in Answers. I think the issue might be that users who know enough to go to the contest info and put a comment there, will also notice the deadline date on the page and not have to ask.

The new contest system is great, although it has a different look and feel (especially with the tabs) than other parts of the site. But that's cosmetic. The content and the more structured layout is excellent.

Glad you like the new system. It's been frustrating and confusing having the information split up into three parts (contest, announcement, winners). We can do a lot more fun stuff with it, such as a better way to show off the prizes.

Also, the emphasis of the contest page is on what's currently important. The message changes for deadline, voting, and judging. Just having the six dates was also confusing before.

When looking through the old contests, I still get the How To Enter tab. It even lists some instructables that are eligible. I won't click to find out if it does accept an entry into an old contest for fear of breaking it.

I guess they should add timezone clarification on the dates and times since that is a common question.

This is the behind-the-scenes "contest bookkeeping" which Rachel has mentioned in a couple of her recent Site Updates. It sounds like they created a new database table(s) for contest information, and went back to fill the table for all previous contests, not just for new ones.

And actually, it would be nice to know the dates from previous contests. It might give a sense for what people should gear up for if the contest is ever offered again and when it was relevant. None of the older contests listed have any of that info and it would be nice to say I won that contest way back when...

I find the date that voting ends very important as I need to know how long people have to vote for my ible. Also it's kinda stressy those days since I regulary check if I'm in the top 10 or not. So that date is kinda important. And knowing when judging ends is also handy to as the winners are announced the day or two days after that :) So yeah I really would like to see those back if possible :)

I support this although I think it's logical that the date that we see is the entry date and that voting is half a week and judging half a week after that date. But yeah it would be nice if we could have that back again :)
