New Job, New Club Answered

Some of you know, some of you don't, but I started a new job today, at a local new high school.

Instructables came up in my interview, and as a result we are starting an Instructables club, starting Thursday lunchtime.  First project will be my paper catapult, but we may start encouraging them to publish their own projects over the next few weeks.

Bound to happen...

Oh, don't you know - my first science lesson "flying solo", I managed engulf my arm in a ball of fire. The lesson? "How to use a Bunsen safely"...

LOL. You need to read Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire. Great book.

Why did I think you worked at Instructables?

Because I spend far too much time here?

(I do do a bit of volunteer work with the Community Team.)

...orrrr maybe because your "arm" was on fire? ;-)

Well if you and your students "have fun" I am sure they will learn a great deal from you.

Don't mix high-molar nitric acid and sugar and then let it sit in a sealed container. It makes an explosion and releases a poison orange gas.

My science teacher did that.

Looks fun, but we currently have no conc. nitric...

Yeah, that is it exactly. We had been dissolving pennies earlier with the acid, and then he tried to replicate the graphite-growth experiment of HCl+sugar, but instead by using nitric. It didn't do anything, so we went back inside and he stored it in his toxic waste cabinet in the store room and shut the door.
We went off and did other stuff until about a half an hour later when he needed something and went back into the store room. When he opened the door all the gas poured out, and we had to evacuate the school for an hour.

He was pretty bummed out about it.

Nice puppet and what looks to be PH meters :-)

is that a test tube or a graduated cylender he knocks over?

That is cool.....I hope Instructables is around for a good long time, too.....the 7 year old I am mentoring in the sciences (she's AS also) is ALREADY excited about doing many of the projects here (with help of course). She is looking forward to being a member in the future :-)

Awesome. Have them publish their own stuff later on down the line.

That is very cool, I'm glad you are having a good time with your new job. I was in the "Science Club" when I was at school which was good fun.

Congratulations on the new job! I hope the students realize how lucky they are to have a creative and motivational teacher.
