New laptop, new features, how to use one? Answered

So a couple days ago I got an Acer Aspire 5670 (aka 5672wlmi)
on the front it has a infrared port, and i have the drivers for it installed.
I am running windows XP home edition.
I have a remote from a car Dvd player, and i was wondering, is there any way i can use it to interact with my laptop? (eg change the volume, skip a song, pause videos in media player)
oes anyone know or have a laptop like this that have done this?

That is indeed the port.  You can use it to connect to printers, scanner etc. that also have ports and the correct software.  YOu can also control the computer with the correct remote control unit.  You can get the manual here.

thank you for the manual, whilst reading it i also found out how to assign the buttons by the screen, and that my laptop may have originally come with a remote.
I am getting Acer Arcade and im going to see if my other remotes will work, if not, i am going to have to figure out how to set up either winlirc or pc Remote control. i cannot get either to work :/

thanks again for the manual :)

THere is a chance that a remote from "any" laptop might work. They basically do the same thing and lots of the tv or radio remotes are copies of the same chip.

the symbol by the infrared port looks just like this:

I used to control my old Gateway Solo9300 (10 years ago) with PCRemote (http://www.pcremotecontrol.com) which worked really well (very simple to use and configure)... If you are keen, you could write your own using WinLIRC (http://winlirc.sourceforge.net)...

PC Remote says its shareware, were some of the features just disabled, or did you have to pay to keep using it?

My HP laptop came with a remote to do this. Did you look really carefully at all of the packing that came with your laptop?

unfortunately, i got the laptop used, its a really nice laptop though.

Are you sure the IR port isn't a data port to transfer information from laptop to laptop or phone to laptop.

the instruction manual should explain.
