PC Fan help? Answered

Hi!

Got a Dell 8600 Inspiron
When I boot, the fan briefly turns twice. Begins to start, but stops abruptly. Doesn't do anything else. I think the fan needs to be replaced, but if it is faulty, why is it able to start briefly?

I noticed this b/c it was getting very hot and I noticed a very very very faint beeping sound coming from around the area of the fan. Random beeping, no pattern to it.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

Old machine, about 6 - 8 years old. I don't know exactly, it was given to me. The problem just started recently. The fan has worked in the past.

sounds like the fan has given up - sometimes they respond to a drop or two of oil on the bearings.

Just check the BIOS settings around the fan - it's possible that some smart fan control has been set wrong such that it's not spinning until the thing gets past XXoC.

I don't think its BIOS, the fan used to work and now the laptop gets up to around 138 F with still no fan action.

Sounds like a dead fan - or worse, a fan controller. I'd look for a replacement.
