Please help me about my thesis. Answered

Hello. I'm currently taking an Electronics course. I have a thesis. So here's my thesis idea. The purpose of my thesis is for children's safety. A child will have to wear a watch wherein it will send off signals continuously and when the receiver which is inside an extension receives the signals emitted from the child's watch it will trigger the outlet to switch off then the appliances plugged in that extension will be off. As for the extension I'm gonna put a relay circuit inside an extension wherein any appliances could be plugged in. My problem is what transmitter and receiver am I gonna use to trigger the circuit to switch off? Should I use Bluetooth? But it doesn't auto-connect as far as I know. Can I use Zigbee shield? Does it have transmitter and receiver? What microcontroller should I use? Please help me. :( Thanks in advance!

As Caitlinsdad says, shutting things off without warning can damage them.

Also, as a parent, I feel that the direction you are taking is over-protective, and liable to result in a child playing with devices by walking close top them on purpose, shutting them down.

I would suggest altering the direction of your work slightly:

First, design a device that locks access to the appliance (but does not shut it down), preventing the child opening it and harming themselves.

Second, and in parallel, design a device, to be worn by an adult, that only unlocks the appliance when the adult is near.

So, you would have a washing machine that will run happily at all times, but which will prevent an unaccompanied small child opening and climbing in. If the adult is present, the appliance can be opened and filled/emptied as usual, and the child will be able to learn how to use the appliance safely in the presence of a responsible adult.

.................

Just a thought.

What kind of appliances would you need to shut off? Killing power to an appliance abruptly when it is running can damage the appliance. Kid's have a tough time keeping anything on that is forced upon them and the parent has to make sure the device is charged and make sure the kid wears it. Maybe you should look into RFID badges and readers. As a parent, I do not see where your device would add more value to basic childproofing precuations that should be taken in the first place like keeping things secured and out of reach. Good luck.

Electric Fan and Washing Machine specifically. Well we're gonna put a time delay in the process to prevent the appliance from being damage.

RFID badges and readers? Doesn't that need to be near to each other?

Thanks for your opinion as a parent but my thesis can't be changed as it was already approved by my professor and as much as I want to change my thesis, the due date is coming soon so I cannot change my research study. :(

There are many topics on RFID sensing passive vs powered and antenna design so that the distance required can be from inches to feet. Search for the RFID arduino projects on this site. You can also check out the tutorials or projects with bluetooth or wifi/xbee on adafruit or sparkfun sites.
