RC vehicle function modification Answered

I have here a cheap rc vehicle with foward//turn capability. Is there some way i can alter the controls to make it turn left and right? The front wheels arent restricted to left or right only, they turn freely in either direction but the remote only has a turn button. (Pics of front and back of remote just added. Some sort of switch activates each motor but the control is either on or off from what I can tell. Although from what I can see, simply adding a couple of switches with foward/reverse functions soldered directly to the board would do what I needed.)

This project is currently on hold till I get the bigger stuff out of the way. Old microwaves, vacuums, washing machines etc take up alot of space hehe.

can you get 2 independant signals from the remote ? from the circiut in the car ?

yeah, one single for foward, the other for turn

can you remove the circuit from the car and apply voltage to the motors (directly) so they go the way you want ?

yeah, 9v runs the motors in either direction depending on which side is pos/neg. That part I can figure out, its the control im unsure about.

are there 1 or 2 motors ? how are they set up ?

I took the truck apart. One motor, it seems one button is foward and one is reverse. The reverse button causes the wheels to unlock from the straight ahead position and allows it to turn. So maybe its suck the way it is?

try to modify it mechanically so that it can do what you want when you connect batteries directly to the motors then map what you have to give to each motor for each mode and we'll be ready to design the control

I think the control might be the problem. With 1 button for each function, how can i map 2 functions to each button? And for that matter, the board in the vehicle has only the solder points for a single motor. Im not sure I can get around that.

button 2 switches modes button 1 drives in the currently chosen mode now you can make as much modes as you wish

Did you get a look at the bottom of the control pcb? the buttons are simple on/off switches. I dont have any idea how to manipulate that set up. Im sure its simple without someone saying " hey, do this and that " Im gonna be lost. Still, Im going to try mapping it this way and that and see what I get '

the remote does not need any modification the car needs extra circuit that is not too hard to design our main problem now is the mechanics. modd them so that it'll be possible to drive the car in each of the ways you want (by connecting battery directly to the motors). then well see how to apply the rc control to it

As you can hopefully see on the photo here, the control is divided left and right, foward and reverse. Touching any of the outer pads to the central pad (In the foward/reverse circles) produced that action. I have no idea what that middle area is, but I do know that touching an outer pad to the very middle pad produces the action associated with whatever side youre using. Does that make sense?

this remote is just capable of sending 2 different signals. nothing really special we dont need to do any modifications to the remote

Youve said that twice now, but I dont understand how to get a left right function on a remote set up for only foward/back. On the mechanical side, in the picture here youll see the thing is already set up for left right turning, the only thing missing is a motor to do it, which i have plenty of and can easily mount in the right place. The next question will be, where on the vehicle pcb will I solder the motor connections. I suppose a picture of that pcb might be helpful eh

the remote just sends 2 different signals. it does not mind if they are forward and back or light and beep. to it they are just 1 and 2 the circuit in the car maps the signals 1 and 2 to the forward and back in the motor we'll create a new circuit that comes between the existing one and the motors. itll have the 2 existing wires as inputs and 4 or more wires as outputs for the new setup of motors

I get ya now.
Course, I dunno how to design a circuit, but hey, i desoldered an entire vcr for parts, im sure i have something useful here =)

complete building the mechanics. then we'll build the extra circuit exactly for the setup you made
