How about a random button like wikipedia has? I think it would be fun to stumble around Instructables with a random button. If you guys already have this feature its hard to find.

It'd be nice to be able to stumble through every ible at once instead of just one category at a time. Perhaps you could work a deal with Stumble Upon and get on their "Stumble Through" list.

I think they should use Wikipedia's model. When you click the link it generates a random article from the entire site not just a certain category. I don't like the stumble upon thing because its all user submitted content, they don't crawl the internet. Four friends and I use stumble upon and all five of us end up seeing the same exact things because there isn't enough content.

The "random" button already gives you a random selection of projects.

Yeah, we know. What we are saying is it isn't that impressive.

AFAIK, it has never been a popular feature - most people search for a particular style of project, browse certain categories, or watch the recently-featured feeds.

It stands to reason that its poor results and being hard to find could attribute to it not being popular.

"Poor results" contradicts your desire for "random." If you want good results, then you should be looking at the Editors' Picks. If you want random, then you get whatever happens to be there (most of which is not great).

If you think you can do better, then why don't you write the JavaScript yourself and prove it?

I don't remember saying "i can do it better" It was my understanding that this was an area for comment/suggestions but you guys are such elitists there is no way anything on the site could possibly be improved. You obviously have everything perfect and have no reason to listen to users like me who make it possible for advertisers to pay you money for your adspace and pay your salary. I'm sorry I wont suggest or defend my position for improvements anymore I've learned my lesson of great ones

You've misunderstood.

There are a lot of features on this site that are missing, or suboptimal, or just plain crappy. With less than a dozen staff people, improvements have to be prioritized, and the priority is (whether you like it or not) on maintaining income so the site doesn't shut down. A "pick a random Instructable" button doesn't increase revenue. Therefore it is not high on any sensible list of priorities.

This is a do it yourself site. The whole point of Instructables is building projects yourself, and then showing other people what you did and how you did it. If you want something new, don't sit around griping about how no one else will do it for you. Do it, show us all how you did it, and bask in the glory of a job well done.

It's not hard to find, and the quality of the results is purely a matter of opinion.

It's not a lack of popularity, it's a lack of need or desire. The vast majority of members and visitors simply do not want to randomly browse, because they are looking for something specific.

Click any of the tabs at the top of the screen ("Food" etc), and look just above the rows of thumbnails that appear.

See where it says "editors' picks | popular | recent | rating | views | zeitgeist | random "?
