To borrow from Wikipedia:

"Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. Steam also has community features, automated game updates, in-game voice and chat functionality."

It is basically the best and worst thing for PC gaming, depending who you ask. If you ask me, it's not a good thing, in its current state but I haven't boycotted it yet. There are thousands of arguments all over the internet about how great or horrible it is, so I won't start listing the pros and cons here but if you're interested, feel free to do a googgle search.

In short, people on your friends list get updates or messages when you achieve accomplishments, play games, log in/out, etc. It is also easier to group up, chat and/or join/play their games online. Similar to your friends list on anything else, XBox, PS3, Facebook, whatever.

If someone doesn't know what Steam is, screen-shots, info and the like will not help, since they don't have it. It's useless to have if you don't play games on it (if you play games on it, you have it). Although, it might help them join...

Friends on steam - do you exchange messages, play games cooperatively or what else etc?

Sell it like that - tell people what you get up to so it sounds interesting - drop some screen-shots in.
