Shenanigans! - your "premium membership" and PDFs Answered

I was browsing an article to get the full article PDF download. I was not logged in at the time since you can still browse the site without logging in (for how much longer I don't know).I was shocked to read in a tool tip that "a benefit of the premium membership is the ability to download and print the PDF for $4.95 per year" Outraged at reading this, I logged in only to make a complaint. When in the course of confirming the price for the comment I noticed I had access to the PDF. Now if I were a new user and looking into collecting as much article information as possible, and saw this tool tip I would sign up for the premium member to get the PDF. Even though I don't need to. Please correct the text of that tool tip to not mislead what few users you may still have.

OK, $49.95 for 2 Years don't seem like too much to ask but I am wondering what their advertising revenue brings in. Is it a case of do-or-die or is it a case of more profits? If it is the latter then I will be sad. If the former then let us know so we can make informed decisions. Other wise I will think the worse... IMHO

Outrage? From someone who has, since Oct of 2007, contributed NOTHING to the community other than this thread? Laughable. $4.95 a YEAR and the whine goes out that Instructables is somehow no longer egalitarian. Pathetic

Yes, I know this isn't nice, please feel free to flag it.

I'm sorry Tool, I miss the point of your argument. Are you saying that because I didn't feel it necessary to post about how to grind your own meat, or how I spent my summer vacation that my feelings towards the future of this site are any less worthy than yours? Who do you think reads the projects you seem to think the all important benchmark? I could point out that to the logical person, the fact that in the two years since I created this account (which is not my first, but that's another tale) that this is the first time I've witnessed something important enough to speak up - that to me, this issue holds more weight than yet another home hydroponics post. But instead I'll leave you with that famous quote by Abe Lincoln "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

No, I'm saying that there have been numerous threads about the future of instructables, but instead of contributing to them you make an ex post facto complaint. And since your motivation seems to be financial, well....... Secondly, if you're trying to get under my skin, it won't work, but thanks for trying. Lastly, it's better to be thought a fool, than remain silent and by doing so, fail to exist.

Just an expression I guess..
After a bit of googlin' I found it to be a song by Lil John feat. 3-6 Mafia..
I've never heard of the song to begin with.. ._.

next time go with "I pity the fool...", Mr. RoboT

My life is fulfilled in that one picture. Wait! It needs Chuck norris.

might I interrupt this conversation with my rendition of:

"MY LITTLE PONY
MY LITTLE PONY
MY LITTLE PONY
MYYYY LITTLE PONNYYYYYYY!!!"

thank you.

May I ask what on earth hat was about?

I am fony disguised as a pony.... ohh i pretend i like my friends!!! I sing to the flowers and dance away the hours. but when there gone i give a cheer! my little pony, so skinny and bony went to the park to playyyyy tripped on a wire exploded in fire and that was the end of my pony's days Yep, gotta love them ponies! ...if you hear / see / say / think the word pony for too long it sounds really weird.

On the contrary, you and your skin are of little consequence to me. You have however answered my question as "Yes you are an elitist". Which is fine. Had you read the thread to begin with, you would see my real issue has nothing to with my financial state at all - but a misleading tool tip. Searching for "tool tips" brings up 2 pages of results none of which deal with my concern. (did you find that internship though?) Lastly yes there have been other threads about the future of instructables, and yet searching for "premium membership" only brings up my thread.

I think you could have been nicer about it but I agree with you. ;) $5 a year is nothing for keeping permanent copies of awesome projects on your computer. Much cheaper than buying books upon books for every subject you're interested in, that's for sure.

Heck, I could even afford to pay the $5 a year if it actually helped them in any way.

I also want to revise the point of this thread since I believe it has been missed. The issue is the misleading tool tip. Yes it is only $5. Yes it is sad that they've slide down this slope. Yes this is a very helpful site. Yes this comment is the only post I've made in two years. Yes my last line was harsh, and for that I apologize.

Has anyone actually become a premium member yet?

Well, it IS a benefit of the premium membership. They speak the truth... And let me preface this by saying I absolutely love instructables. But I am starting to think its golden age has passed with the implentation of premium memberships, which is truly a shame. I think it will rapidly turn "youtube-like". Then again, maybe not! After all, youtube does not have premium memberships.

Yeah. Premium memberships are here. Sigh. I guess they have to pay the bills, but it represents a major paradigm shift, and you know they can never go back. People would be outraged to pay for a while, then go back to everyone having the privileges they paid for. We have gone from a society of all equals to one where money can purchase more features (not front page features (!), features as in abilities, etc). Better than no ibles, I guess, but I'm still not converted.

Personally, I'm all for it. it's only 5 bucks a year, and you gotta make money somehow.

it doesnt happen to me when you click pdf it brngs you to this and your free to download

Obviously, they are still working out kinks in the site. Its a big site, and very complex, with no where near the number of people needed to perfect new improvements, no doubt, there are various things being tried out.

I also suggest taking a more friendly constructive attitude,
not mislead what few users you may still have.
Last i heard, were getting more and more new people signing up each day.

"Last i heard, were getting more and more new people signing up each day." One could be lead to believe that that was due to required membership to view secondary photos, all project steps or to download project pdfs. But you are right, I was harsh with that statement. For that I apologize.

We all have insufficient information for your conclusion. If the rate of new memberships is a smooth function, with no discontinuity correlated with the introduction of the "experiments," then your conclusion is not likely to be true. On the other hand, if there was a sudden increase in the membership rate subsequent to the start of the "experiments," then you may well be correct. Since we don't have that information, your guess is only that, a guess.

You could, if you chose to do so, edit this forum topic to remove the somewhat offensive comment. You could also consider adding some clarification to your comment, since it is most assuredly not clear that you are reporting a bug -- to anyone reading your topic, it sounds like you are complaining about the apparent introduction of paid memberships.

Too far! I don't know if I want to stay if they start doing this premium crap.

Well, if it advances to a point where they take away what we have, give many new features and privileges to paying members, and none for us...I'll have to agree.
