Trying to figure out how to make a 7 segment LED show random Answered

Hey everyone

I am working on a project where I would like to install one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/10pcs-0-8inch-7-segmen...=item483fd1c0dd

and have it display completely random things (dont even have to be numbers) How could I possible go about doing this?

I would like to try and make it as simple as possible,

Thanks!

The simplest way could be to drive each of the elements from one output of a shift register, which you fill with the output of a high-frequency oscillator or other source of noise to provide roughly "random" bits. There is probably all the information you ever needed about shift registers online- the Arduino site will have plenty because they are a common strategy for increasing the number of possible outputs of microcontrollers.

If you want random digits it gets a bit harder- you need more control circuitry to make sure the things you get are real digits.  I think there is a single chip that converts from a binary input to 7-segment output, but at that point you might be better off just using a simple microcontroller.
