What are these? Answered

Found in my father-in law's  old  tool box. They aren't metal or magnetic. Possibly ceramic. The only information printed on the side is 'Made in Canada'.  They fit together into a unit of four.

They are ferrite cores for the use of filtering.
Can be clipped over existing cables.
Quite handy sometimes on long signal lines and for dirty power supplies.

Ah ha! He was into stereo systems before CD's. This makes sense. And the design is pretty elegant for clipping over existing wires. Fastening, protection and packaging all in one solid bit of plastic. Somebody really thought about that.

Just looked up modern ones online. They look pretty much the same. Thanks!

All you need is a matching bobbin and you can pre-wind a transformer.

The top right looks like a wall outlet box and the bottom left is some kind of snap grab.
