What can i do to find out what's wrong with my dvd player? Answered

My dvd player has had some problems playing for more than an hour, usually using a cleaning disc works for a while but it doesn't stop it for long, is there something i can do to fix it or should i get a new player? i have a Sony D350P and the warranty is expired if it helps.

Sometimes you can fix a dvd player by going into the menu and finding the factory RESET option. This fixed one of my players (not sony) that would not play one of my disks and it kept saying the disk was from the wrong region. Be sure you set your REGION to the USA (if you live there) because If your region is set wrong then your DVD's will not play.

Over time it appears that the lasers in the players start to get dim. I have had some DVD drives that could not read some discs apparently because of the lasers getting dim. There is not much you can do to fix them. Cleaning the dust out does help and may buy you some more life time but ultimately its dying. Interestingly I have only seen this problem in the DVD lasers. Most CD player lasers never went dim. They would just burn out like a light bulb. The possible reason might be that its a different type of laser. BlueRay is still to new for any problems like this to show up yet.

You could try to blast out the inside with a can of compressed air duster, but I wouldn't spend much money trying to fix it. You can buy new DVD-VCR combo players from $40 to $130 U.S. at most big box retailers and on-line.
