What is the best way to connect 2 pieces of steel together, to make i strong on a Lloyds machine (bolt, weld & etc)?? Answered

I am required to make a 'joint' between to same steel samples.. but the rules are:

- The joint will be tested for strength & weighed. Mark awarded in proportional to Load (N) - 100 x mass (g)

- All materials and methods are permitted for joint (welding, bolting etc).

- Material around hole must NOT be reinforced, but it may ve cut back

- All completed joints must fit into the Lloyd machine, using standard attachment (with 8mm diameter pin through the 10mm hole). The holes MUST be 300 +/- 20 mm apart (centre to centre). These holes must be oringal holes - drilling new holes for pin is not permitted.

let me know how that works out for you ,  I might try th' araldite fer my next bike build instead of weldin' certain parts !

Sounds like your homework.

Its a project and ive done tests alreadly.. involving just welding, bolting and a mixture of both.
So i just wanted to know any different alteratives maybe... because i feel ive ran out of any other ideas

What were your failure modes ? Have you managed to reach the UTS of the material ? Or are you always seeing failure in the fastening ? 
What kind of steels are you using ? Did you weld them in an inert atmosphere, or with a TIG process ? Did you post anneal them ? Did you ensure the samples were very dry to avoid hydrogen issues ? Clean, new steel ?
