What is your Published to Unpublished ratio? Answered

After finishing one last week and deleting one I'm finally at 1:1. Are you an unpublished packrat, collecting ideas, or do you (unlike me) finish everything you start?

I don't have anything unpublished. I type mine up when the kids finally go to bed for the night, and I worry I'd forget to publish if I didn't do it all in one go.

4:0 I only add instructables after I've made something cool and looked back, thinking, I should have instructabled that, so i usually make another or dismantle the old one. I thetn have a whole instructable, so i publish it.

5:0 lol. I publish everything I do

16:16 I wonder how many people actually make the projects I published.? How can we get info there?

2:18 (or, as per Goodhart, 1:9 :)

The 18 Unpublished 'Ibles break down into:
* 3 that are on the brink, awaiting just one or two more pics and some text & proofing here and there (one for the Digital Days photo contest - anyone want to offer odds on whether I'll make it? :)
* 5 that are half-finished projects, with some of the photos and parts of the text.
* And 11 that are placeholders for super-nifty 'Ible ideas. About half of these have text copy-pasted from some of my over-long replies in "Answers," on the theory that, if I had that much to say, I should probably create an 'Ible for it.

That's not counting the 5 Ibles-In-Progress on my own computer, 5 embryonic Ible-ideas brainstormed on my Orangeboard, and the 3 "Ibles I should do someday" post-its stuck to my monitor.

Just call me "an Idea Person." :)
Whoo-hoo! I'm up to 3:17!!!
Just published my photography 'Ible, and got it submitted in time for the Digital Days photo contest (I'm counting on the sympathy vote :).

(I realize that there's no great reason for anybody but me to be thrilled and happy about this, but figured this topic was as good a place as any for me to do my celebratory whooping and hollering.)

Whoo-hoo #2!!!! :)

Finally published one of the 17 that have been languishing so long in Unpublished durance vile. But I started a new 'Ible in anticipation of the Sewing Contest, so that makes my total ratio 4:18.

And now my new 'Ible is Front Page Featured! Woot, woot, and double-woot!!! :)

I am still struggling to find time to finish the project for the USB contest......ah what's the use....it isn't anything so special anyways....

"ah what's the use....it isn't anything so special anyways...."

Fiddlesticks. If it's special, or useful, or amusing, to you; then it's worthy of an Ible.

Whether that Ible is (or can be) brought into being in time for a given contest isn't really so important, The purpose of the contests is to inspire, not to frustrate. If you haven't quite finished the 'Ible by the contest deadline, you're still ahead - because your new Ible wil be almost finished. :)

"Whether that Ible is (or can be) brought into being in time for a given contest isn't really so important, The purpose of the contests is to inspire, not to frustrate."

My bouts with depression delay me often, but my struggles with my eyesight (especially trying to see the little bands on resistors, with mild color blindness and fading eyesight) drive me to distraction.

Winning a contest is one of my reasons for entering....but so many much better entries are generated......*sigh*, it IS frustrating to me. At one time I DID build most of my current test equipment from scratch, etc....now I am lucky to get an LED to blink without burning it out, it seems.

Something as simple as what I had planned, shouldn't take me over a month to do......I could have done it in one evening.....at one time.

Oh, heck. I think I know the feeling:
There I am, flailing around in a serious depressive funk; and as I try to pull myself out of it I post something that lets slip something of my state of mind. And then some clueless Pollyanna; who knows what it's like to have one bad day, but not a few hundred bad days in a row; comes along and tries to drown my mood in a flood of sunshine and treacle.

If that's the case here, sorry about that. :(
(And if that isn't the case - oh boy, did I just make a fool of myself. :)

This old gray 'Ibler ain't what she used to be, either. I started that meatloaf 'Ible about ten months ago - not that I've been working on it continuously all that time - but time was when I could have knocked it out in a weekend or two.

I do hope you have good lighting and magnifiers for your work bench, and isn't there some sort of a deal somewhere where you can buy resistors already sorted by size and marked in nice big type? (Not that those would solve the problem, but they might make it a bit easier to live with.)

In the meantime, try to bear in mind that the only thing you really have to do is breathe. :)

No, no, you're ok.....I was just a bit frustrated at things.....at one time, I had an entire work room, but it became a messy over crowded "junk box" of a room....so one day, I cleaned it all up, got all the stuff off the floor I wanted to keep, and pitched most of the real junk. Within a few week, my wife started selling on eBay used the room as her personal warehouse....now I can't even move around in my work space....I just want to scream sometimes. As for getting more clearly marked resistors....I have a few of those old style "carbon" resistors the size of my thumb, but they are so good for projects (poor tolerences and just SOOOO big :-) I have a nice magnifier light, but I have to somehow clear away enough stuff so I can get down under the desk and get it plugged in.....maybe while I am on vacation next week. If all I could do was breath, and I could no longer think, I would go instantly crazy.....I have quite a few unfinished ones too....some of which will never be finished so I should go through them and weed those out, at least.

but they are so good for projects should read but they are no good for projects

And rootin'-tootin' multi-mega-WOOT!!!
I hadn't realized that being Home-Page Featured comes with a three month Pro membership!:) :):)

(No, really, I'm not doing all these succesive posts just to bump the thread and advertise my 'Ible. But, if you should happen to feel an irresistable need to take a look: https://www.instructables.com/id/Clean-Out-The-Kitchen-Meatloaf/)

Currently 25:18

1:1 ^^ Most of my unpublished 'ibles are just ideas waiting to come to life...

How does your instructable get rated?and where does the rating come from? I just made a new instructable . The homemade mantis weedeater . Come check it out pretty fond of the idea. Let me know what you think please\ Jim

5:3 (the first two I made where just uterly bad and I couldn't stand to have them under my name anymore...)

It was 0:1...but now its 1:0 ^_^

And it's even been featured too! Congratulations! :) (I'm back to 10:10 now. It'll be 12:9 by Monday I hope.)

I thought I'd dredge this topic up since it's quite a good one.

My current ratio of published:unpublished is 22:24

About 1:5
and one's for the halloween contest.. :(
Stupid camera!

7:2(3). The last is a placeholder that won't ever be published.

You wrote a project, specifically intending not to publish??

And now you know. My unpublished priviate I'ble was to collect comments from conspirators your friends, for inclusion in The Guide.

The "comments" weren't included were they?

It looked to me like some were, and some weren't. However, the same collaborators list applies to both, and Scoochmaroo was encouraging us to tweak the Guide's text if we wished.

Hmm, I must have rushed too much while skimming through it (I am a little limited today in time.....I have to go to work in a few hours...)

In fact, your and LiRa's comments weren't actually included in the introductory text. I suspect they belong as part of the currently single-sentence second paragraph. I'll try to edit something together and see if Sarah likes it.

Aw, I rather liked that one, rougher around the edges yet very nice...

Yes, I did. It's a "collectible." The contents will be moved to a different structure for publication.

Read: He's getting into Nature magazine next week...

Or maybe he's designed a give-away to go in a baggie on the front of Life.

Or he just knows he's going to be on the side of a milk-carton.

No need if he has a very strong grip.....

Yay. 9:1. That last placeholder hasn't yet been deleted.

Eh, need to clear up some of my projects...

Currently, 1:1.5. I'm not counting a slideshow as a full instructable. I'm working on finalizing another 'ible to bring that ratio to 2:0.5, but I haven't finished fleshing out the description of the last step.

3:1 new one (intended to finish, might, might not)...

If we define 'unpublished' as an instructable that has been started and yet unpublished, then I am at a ratio of 16:1.

However, if by 'unpublished' we mean ideas that have yet to be written up into an actual instructable but exist in some form as a prototype or written documentation, then my ratio skyrockets to 16:30 with more being added all the time.

caution: consider that when an instructable is started it is given a place based on it's creation date and time. If you take a month to write your project once started when it comes time to publish your instructable may be 'lost' a few pages back from the more recent instructables. Maybe not a good idea to leave unpublished ones hanging around too long, unless you don't mind where they end up (ie. a month behind), or don't mind starting over.
