What can i do with a working vacuum cleaner that i do not use any more ?

Bench grinder =)
- vacuum cannon
- An unreasonably powerful fan
- A really loud siren/whistle

One could gear it way down and make the loudest clock in the world LOL
That would be the best use of a vacuum ever...
Definitely a vacuum cannon - very cool toy.
I would be interested in making a really powerful one, just to see what could be done with them, I suppose it's always going to limited by the pressure of the atmosphere but a hard vacuum would be giving you results similar to 30PSI if air pressure is around 15 (I think it's more like 14 can't remember, yes at sea level)
You need a partial vacuum - as the projectile accelerates towards the piece of paper, the trace of air in the tube is compressed enough to push the paper off, otherwise it dramatically slows the projectile.
Longer tubes give greater acceleration (the force is applied for longer), but also greater friction. The trick will be to find the balance.
I see, so the key is to maximize force and minimize friction... In the case the larger the diameter the better it'd be within the vacuum motor's limits, since smaller objects have more surface area to mass ratio... Then again using a set power thing a long piece of tubing and a ball bearing with a bit of olive oil on it would probably be pretty good for the job. I could be completely off base about that one though, because there'd be more surface area for the atmospheric pressure to act upon...
Th book where I originally came across these (Vacuum Bazookas, Electric Rainbow Jelly and 27 other Saturday Science Projects by Neil A. Downie) recommends that the projectile be at least twice as long as the diameter of the branch-pipe, to stop it turning and jamming as it passes the vacuum.
One more thing to consider... I have some junk lying about, I'll get round to making one and tinker...
Do you want scans of the relevant pages?
Does a vacuum cannon suck giant steel spheres back into the tube? Or does it shoot a big hole of non-air out at people?
Long tube, with a branch off very near one end. The vacuum-cleaner is connected to the branch and switched on. a piece of paper is placed over the end nearest the branch.
A projectile is inserted into the end furthest from the branch, and held for a moment to allow the pressure in the pipe to drop.
When it is released, external air pressure accelerates the projectile up the tube towards the branch.
As it nears the paper-covered end, the paper falls off and the projectile exits at speed.
A kind of "gun" version of the Air brush ?
Whoa....nifty design. Thanks for the explanation! So it's a single-shot breech-loader. The paper cover is cheap for a disposable part, but I wonder whether it could be designed with a lightweight (.5mm Al?) cover plate mounted with a spring hinge?
Low mass is essential. The paper isn't knocked aside by the projectile, it falls away as the last traces of air in the tube build up enough pressure to push it off. A spring would mean too much kinetic energy transferred to the "lid".
I wonder if a really well sealed rubber plug being pulled on by a srping would work, though it might fall off too early.
I suppose greaseproof paper would be good...
A scrap of note-paper seemed to work fine.
Both, at the same time.
I love it when you get all philosophical, kelsey...
Never heard such thing....
Read down, kitemans explanation is a fair summation, been meaning to make one soon, I'll post it up...
I am still thinking about what exactly I will do with the "motor" I have. :-) Although a vacuum former, and siren have my attention at the moment.
I think a siren would be a good toy, if slightly damaging to the public conscience.
Hey could you build a small electric go kart with the motor in the vacuum cleaner ?
AC on batteries = lots of complicated circuitry.possible, but much harder than just getting a DC motor.
If i read kiteman correctly, then it would be a small gun that would only shoot as far as a normal pneumatic cannon charged to 14.7 psi?
So basically it is pushed..(pulled?) with 14.7 pounds of force if the barrel is 1 inch in diameter.
Not much, I pressurise stuff to 60psi...
No i think that was stupid, sorry. Im only 13
An air compressor, just mod it a bit.
Some people have used that for their spud guns hehe...
Could you possibly vacuum with it?
you could use it to clean your room and impress your mom.
If my kids tried that, my wife would die of heart failure. It's just not worth it!
My mother hadn't been in my room for several weeks... I had gotten annoyed at the amount of glass, metal and junk the soles of my feet and cleaned, she popped in to ask if I wanted anything from the shop and ended up falling in the door in shock. I was surprised myself, noone asks if we want anything from the shop.
Always reminds me of that sketch from Henry Enfield & Chums where Kevin asks his mum to borrow the vacuum cleaner and his mum faints. However, Kevin's intentions for the vacuum cleaner are other than cleaning his room...
LOL, who knows though, if they sucked up everything on the floor (so they didn't have to pick it up); that might be expected :-)
what about a mini sub ?
Hey check out this new forum i made for instructable fans please join and populate..click here
how would you make a sub with a vacuum?
btw there's a reply button
Good ideas but i need something more advance and cool..........
