Flint or chert can be found in a lot of places occurring naturally and can be picked up off the ground. If you live in a area where the geology doesn't provide this stone you might contact a local flint knapper. Failing that, flint may be found at rock shops, gem & mineral shows, or even on Ebay.

around here I can dig them out of the garden.

River bed, you need to study your local geology.

on the other hand the older sparking wheel lighters usually with a wick - Zippo for example - had flints in them

The strike sticks on the backs of those magnesium starter things, scrape along the back with a knife and you've got yourself some blinding sparks.

When I visited the historic bit of Williamsburg, VA I visited a shop that had some old timey chunks of flints and steel strikers. That's the closest I've come to that.

If the question is where you could find flint occurring naturally, websearch would answer that too -- the Wikipedia article describes what kinds of formations flint is typically found in.

A sporting goods store with a good camping/outdoors section, REI, or a good surplus store. You could always do a Google search, but that might be too complicated.
