i understand that capacitors store electricity, but what controls them. what lets them discharge?

I guess you can think of a cap as a really fast battery. It discharges when there's a path between the terminals.

they discharge thru what ou connect to them the discharge depends on the size (capacity) of the capacitor and the voltage that its charged up to (which can be different each time). together they determine the amount of electricity (charge) stored in the capacitor. think of capacitor like the battery icon on your laptop or phone. the capacity is attribute of the capacitor and cannot be changed. voltage is like the lines that say how much its charged it also depends on the conductivity of what you connect to the capacitor. for example if you leave it disconnected (in the air) it will keep its charge for very long. if you connect to a piece of wire it will discharge instantly. if you connect to resistor it will discharge slower. if you connect to a neon lamp (thru resistor to not blow the lamp) it will discharge down to certain voltage (the shut down voltage of the lamp) and stop discharging

what do you mean? Capacitors work by 2 sheets of metal that are very close together with an insulator right next to each other. They kinda work like static electricity
