Go to the manufacturers web site and look up the specific model. As far as I know all of the manufacturer's list compatible upgrades especially for RAM as that is the most popular and most productive upgrade.
I would say that if its using DDR3 then it will have a module that will work. DDR3 is pretty new and since any laptop made with it was made to be Vista capable then its surprising that it doesn't already have at least 2 gig.
If you are running Windows XP the 32 bit version the max of memory that the OS can recognize and use is 3.3 gig. Any more than that is ignored. Vista and Windows 7 broke that barrier.
As a rule of thumb, more RAM is better so I would skip trying to get the 2 and go for at least 4 Gig, probably two 2 gig modules.

Go to http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/. They will try to sell you their product but the system scanner will tell you what you can use in your computer.

Along the way you will need to know if your laptop memory drivers can handle the extra ram? Is the Ram fast enough? Is the Power supply able to deliver power? and not overheat in the process ? Do you have to slow the master clock to reduce power loading?
