how cand i get a ethernet cable thing up in my room? Answered

ok i have a pc up in my room it does have enternet but it uses usb to work and i NEED to get it to work with enternet it it possable to drill though the floor or drilling through the wall and sending it out side and then soming back in our basement useing a long cable would be to much it would have to be very very very long but i do have a d-link dwa-140 http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DWA-140-RangeBooster-802-11n-Wireless/dp/B0010T8X54

USB and Ethernet are two very different kinds of network. USB is used for local attachment to external devices. It's very much a short-range system.

Ethernet is used for longer connections -- room to room or further -- so that's what you would want for a wired connection down to the basement.

The other solution would be a WiFi connection (802.11). It sounds like you already started down that route since you've got the RangeBooster, and presumably you already have a WiFi-capable router since otherwise the booster wouldn't be particularly useful... So why not just get a wireless adapter for the PC and avoid having to run cable?

I've made 802.11 connections over a hundred feet, from one house to another, by using a directional antenna. Got it up to 200 one time when I was using it to get an audio feed from one end of a hotel to the other. (For technical reasons I couldn't put that signal through the hotel's own network.)

If you do prefer to run wires, it's like running video cable or intercom cable or anything else of that sort. Typically, to go from the top floor to the basement you'd run wire up into the attic, across to some existing cable channel that runs the full height of the house, then down that to the basement. You may have to drill to access the wall through its top plate, and pulling the cable down is a pain unless someone courteously left a snake in place after the last time wiring was added.

Yes, it's possible to go outside. I've seen a lot of sloppy cable-TV installations done that way. NOT recommended; putting holes through the outside wall of a house is a Bad Thing even if you try to caulk it closed afterward.

Whatever you do, DON'T thread the cable outside! If you go through the exterior of your house, it is easier for moisture, insects, varmints, etc. to get in and out.

Drilling through the floor wold be a better choice, but remember that a hole is permanent and not lightly removed. But if a floor hole is used, the cable should be fine.

Caulk would seal the holes, i guess. But the cable, outside, would be exposed to the elements. Outside, the plastic coating on the cable would begin to break down due to sunlight, and soon the cable would be useless.

The problem with this is, the cable will break down and your once watertight hole will leak. Both of these problems are better left unfettered with.

i just got finished running cat5e to every room in my house.  I bought a big 8 port wall plate and a single wall plate for all the rooms.  I put the 8 port one in my loft where the router is and the single ones in every room.  Then ran all the cableing up throgh the walls and in the attic then down every wall that needed the jacks.  what you will need to hook up the plates are keystone jacks.  you can find them @ home depot and such but very expensive.  If you plan on making your own cables you will need a crimper and plugs also.  this website has excellent customer service and their jacks are alot cheaper than most places.  you can buy everything you need from here


You should be able to get almost 300 ft or 100 m using cat5 cable.  I would try the cable.  It's easy to learn to install the jacks and then when you hook into it it's a direct link.

If you can't get it all the way there you can at least get it closer before you go to wireless.  Wireless is not so hot going thru walls and floors unless you are using a very powerful unit.

Google "ethernet" and see what it takes.

You could use a wireless one, that seems easier than all that trouble. If you are set on drilling something, go ahead and see what happens.
