Unless it is really big it does not pose any risk to other animals. If you had baby chicks it might go after them. It has a better chance of getting attacked than it has of hurting anything. Chickens will go after and eat small snakes. Chickens will eat pretty much anything that is smaller than them. Last week I found half a snake on my sidewalk. Apparently after it stopped moving it wasn't as much fun to play with for the cats. Snakes do a lot of good so if its not a poisonous one I would say leave it be.

Here in Pennsylvania farmers love them because they are better than cats to get rid of mice and small rats. They might eat the chicks I don't know, but, their benefits outweigh any problems that you might have. I would not worry about it if I were you.

Some "blacksnakes" are harmless, others are highly venemous.

Since we know neither where you are, nor the species of the snake, then the best advice we can give is "leave it alone, call a professional to deal with it".

Try to catch it during the day.  Because it is a black snake, it will be difficult to see it at night.

I realise this is a DIY kind of site, but calling a professional to remove it is also an option.

A mongoose would do but short of that, you can either catch it by hand (they are non-venomous) or deploy a snake trap. There are a number of trap styles available that you can buy or build. Google "snake traps" for extensive information.
