how to maintain the intensity of IR at long distance and make it directional Answered

we are trying to make an infrared shooting game which includes a transmitting gun and a receiving jacket.as everyone knows IR is not directional so at long distance it will diverge but in shooting game we need a pointed IR beam. is there any technique implement this??
we need help..! :(

1+ here.
You can use IT LED's as an emitter but they require quite a bit of power and really good optics so you get a narrow and directional beam.
Still with LED you have no real aim over long distance, after about 6-8m it does not really matter where at the body you aim, it will always be a hit.
With an IR laser and good lens you can adjust the focus so you end up with a beam width of about 50cm at 10m distance, which should be good for normal games.
For those really good players you can narrow the beam further.

http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-loupe-set-98722.html maybe one of the lenses from this set will work. Worth a try.

Check for LED holder on Ebay.
You get them in metal housings with glass lens.
They should work just fine for the purpose.
When I use them for "normal" LED projects and need the best possible focus I adjust the plastic holder inside to set the LED in the right spot.
Still you will face the problem of the beam expanding quite badly over longer distances.
Some cheap webcams can be taken apart to remove the IR filter in front of the sensor, just a plastic or glass plate.
Once removed you can use it to check for the light pattern your LED provides, with or without the lens.
For obvious reasons you want to get diodes with a very narrow eam angle to start with...

we want to use tsop as input and LEDs as output. when an input signal is recieved on any of the tsop such as the tsop which is connected on the head so out of the 10 LEDs connected on the head 5 should go low.how can we code this using arduino????
