i have a fingerprint scanner from a old laptop, can i use it with a desktop pc or my new laptop? Answered

its from an acer travelmate 5530, i still have the board it was attached to, but the piece itself has 10 pins sticking out of it, there is a chip on the board that the finger scanner was connected to that has a 8 pin chip, then the 2 mouse buttons, and a interface cable.
is it even feasibly possible to reuse this fingerprint scanner?


It might be, if you can identify the chip-set used on the board.

the board that the scanner was attched to? or the motherboard?

Take no umbrage but it would make no sense to id the mom board chip set.

Once you put the chip id info out here ( in this very question ) there is a slim but tangible possibility that some reader will know something that will be very helpful to you.

i will go and check the board for the chip ID and i will post it up here a little later.

Great pics, the board is lookin overtly large, but then you said double mouse buttons.

So lets think, what does a fingi tip scanner need, if it is to recognize your tip print.
The first cryptic device is a memory which you and Google already found. An EEPROM which stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory !!
The EEPROM is used to Program (ie store) the reference target, your finger tip parameters, in a non-volatile memory (means keeping the info even when power is turned off) for future comparison.
Then when you loose that finger in some teenage fiasco, a command is sent to the EEPROM to Erase itself (clear the memory in less then a second) prior to storing your new finger tip biometric information

The next task is to find out where the processing takes place. Is there a small recognizable micro on that board or does it let the big mother do the job

well two of the pins are ground, two go to the other side of the board (and then i cant find them there), two go to a ICS branded chip, and the rest seem to go to the touchpad connector...

So zack247 you think the rest of the stuff on the print scanner is glue-logic and the main board CPU is the actual control brains to scan, compare and decide.

Makes sense from a business point of view but very hard to reverse engineer the software to convert to your other target application.

It may be quicker to just buy a finger print plugin with software on a CD.

You must have phenomenal soldering Skills.
Regrettably to use the EEPROM takes serious software and cost under $2.

Should you want to pick a programming language in your spare time while you enjoy such luxury, let me council you to avoid "C" since almost everybody knows how to use it.
Try instead the real RealBasic which can make stand alone exe files and launch you on line in four instructions of code.
(and never try Microsoft real basic).

If school offers "C" learn it in order to be conversant.

over by the chip it says hann star MV-4, the chip is:

im not sure what the atmel chip does though...

i tried googling it but all i can find is info saying its a EEPROM, but i dont even know what that is for or how to use it, nor do i know if that is actually part of the fingerprint reader.

the chip for controlling the scanner might actually be on the motherboard, but thats only if the 8 pin chip on this one doesnt control it somehow.

It is possible. The interface is USB oriented. I do not have the breakout of the pins but you might be able to use it with the usb pins on a desktop with some clever soldering and monitoring of the device. I'm not the best at Circuit bending but I am positive it can be done.

are you saying its possible with just the 10-pin scanner piece? or the whole board?
if you are saying the scanner piece, i can see it now, 4 grounds, and 2 d-, d+ and vdds, right?
