if you mix Sodium Acetate and hydrolic acid what would you get? Answered


There's no such thing as "hydrolic acid." I don't think you mean hydraulic either, because that's not an acid, but rather the fluid used in hydraulic equipment.

I think you mean hydrochloric acid (HCl).

If so then it would be the following:

NaC2H3O2 + HCl ---------> NaCl + HC2H3O2

You basically get table salt (NaCl) in solution (aqueous) and Acetic Acid, also known as vinegar.

Oh, well then all you'll get is a decent electrolyte solution. I'm not totaly sure if there react in any larger way.

But if you react NaOH (sodium hydroxide) with acetic acid (HC2H3O2) then you'll get Sodium Acetate.

NaOH + HC2H302 -----------> H20 + NaC2H3O2

First of all what is a electrolyte ? and secondly wher would you get sodium hydroxide?

An electrolyte is a solution that allows electricity to pass through it. Gatorade is an electrolyte. For example, if you take distilled water, which is pure water with no minerals or other impurities, and tried to pass an electrical current through it, the electricity would not flow, because distilled water is a non-electrolyte. That means if you had a bath tub full of distilled water and dropped a toaster that's plugged in and put it into the water, and then put your hand in the water you would not be electrocuted (assuming the tub was perfectly clean).

On the other hand, tap water, which has ions dissolved in it such as iron, copper, calcium and chlorine will allow electricity to flow. The reason why the NaCl and HC2H3O2 solution is a good electrolyte is due to the properties of NaCl when dissolved in water.

NaCl + H20 ------> Na(+) + Cl(-)

The NaCl breaks apart into the Na ion and the Cl ion, this is called dissociation. These are charge particles and help electricity flow through the water. Acetic acid is also an electrolyte in water, but not a good NaCl is. This is because the acetic acid does not fully dissociate, that is to say it does not break apart.

HC2H3O2 + H20 -------> H2(gas) + C2H3O2

As for NaOH. You may be able to purchase some from a chemical supply website, or even buy it at a hardware store. NaOH is also known as Lye or Caustic Soda. I've heard of these two substances before and I think they can be purchased at hardware stores. There usually used as cleaners, due to their high basicity, which means they are strong bases as opposed to strong acids and bases are good cleaners. If I can find the reaction to produce NaOH then I'll post it for you. For some reason I can't remember it and I know I've done it before in chem lab.

There's a couple uses for it, I don't know of all of them. You can use it to make heat pads. You need what's called a "super saturated" solution of sodium acetate. Super saturated means that the solution can no longer dissolve the sodium acetate and if you add more of it to the solution, it will actually become a solid. You can see this for your self by adding sugar to water. For example, if you add 1 tablespoon of sugar to a glass of water and stir it, the sugar will dissolve into the water. But, if you add maybe 5 more, the sugar will not dissolve because the water is already too saturated with sugar. You reach a point of equilibrium. This is why when you make iced tea and you put sugar in it, often too much, it appears at the bottom of the glass no matter how much you stir it. So, by making a super saturated solution of sodium acetate, you can place it inside a pouch with a plastic capsule of solid sodium acetate. When you break the capsule, the solid sodium acetate will react with the super saturated solution and become solid. When it does this it also produces heat. Enough to keep your hands warm in cold weather. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how to make this, but it is possible. There are instructables on how to make super saturated solutions of sodium acetate, and maybe even on how to make the hand warmers.
