No transistor is Equal. every single one has it's own traits and there are hundreds to thousands of different transistors.
When you are choosing a transistor you will want to be sure you got something suitable for your current purpose. is it a PNP or NPN transistor? Can it handle the voltage it may have to deal with?? Can it handle the current?? and so on.
Remember: Component Datasheets are your best friends. they tell you everything you may need to know about a component!!
Simply compare the datasheets or ask my good old friend Google for BC547 alternatives. Since it is a more than common type you have a few hundret replacement types you can use that all do the same within certain parameters.

No BC187 is a PNP transistor and BC547 is a NPN transistor.
They are not even complementary transistors the complementary of BC547 is BC557.
You can get the datasheets here.
