long range Transmitter ? Answered

i'm working on a project, and i need a high range transmitter to send a signal to a receiver from a distance of at least 1 mile (1.6 Km)
is it possible ?
Thanks :)

My link didn't work sorry here's a normal one

I would recommend this Xbee pro. It has an outdoor range of up to 28 miles so anything under 5 should be EXTREMELY reliable.

Yes it is possible. You get radio signals fro practically the other side of the world.

Legal is a different issue and you have to take care.

Practical is even more of an issue. If your line of sight then a simple laser pen and transmit the information. Most legal radio transmissions will also be line of sight.

if it is an alarm you need - I have an IP web cam that monitors motion. when it get motion then it sends me an Email to saw what has happened and takes soem pictures or video of the event.

You can also get alarm system that send SMS messages. in principle you could get a raspberry pi to send an SMS message to your phone anywhere in the world.

+1 Fair Enough...

It will probably go through trees but something like a building may be a different case :)

Everything is possible depending on the frequency and your budget.

If it is line of sight with no obstructions you can get away with under 5W, 1W with directional antennas.

Sre with talking modulated pulses, voice, data transmissions?

no, just a signal to activate an Alarm

(after the car is moved, it sends a signal to a receiver which activate the alarm)

Maybe going optical with a infrared laser?

Of course only an option if there is nothing in the way.

Line of sight, its not that hard to stay legal. Nearly every country in the world comes down hard on unlicenced transmitters unless you use certain frequencies which are available for simple projects like yours, in the UK its 433Mhz, in the USA its 872Mhz for example. You have restricted transmitter power, but you can amplify the return signal how you like.
