transformer winding details? Answered

I am new to the whole electronic scene, i have a bit of kwowlage, but not as much as i need. I need a bit of help pls
I am trying to build my own 12v to 230v dc to ac inverter to connect my flat to it.
I need about a 5KVA inverter
Can anyone pls give me some details on winding the transformer for it. I need to know how many windings on each coil and the size of wire i need for the windings, and any other details that u can spair for my project. Thank you in advace for your help.

Here is a simple circuit  inverter for you.
What size E&I laminations do you have to build your transformer ?
And how many pounds do you have to make the core ?
Then we can talk about windings and wire size.
Be sure to  understand the ible and the detailed comments
that follow.

What is the E&I laminations that u are talking about?
The core, i am from south africa, so i would have to know what the core needs to made of, so i can then see the prices of the metals

Regrettably you do not have the necessary magnetic means by which to make a working transformer let alone a high power unit which is necessary for what you seek to design :(

I realz that my first thinking of running my whole flat off of one transformer is a bit unrealistic for me at the moment. I think that i sould start small then.
I think that i want to try making a 5000 watt to just run a few things. Can you pls give me the info for winding a transformer for one pls

i have read the link ,thank you, but i do not realy understand the termanology that they use like: 4500w 72VDC P:144V "72-0-72" / S:220V and then they talk about center tapping it, how do one do that. pls i realy want to learn all this. pls help me!!!

4500w => 4500 Watts
72VDC => 72 Volts Direct Current
P:144V => Primary winding measures 144 Volts
"72-0-72" => three wire leads measuring 72V from the center tap wire
S:220V => Secondary winding measures 220 Volts
center tapping => a wire coil with a third wire connected to the coil center.

You should start at the beginning  not at the end.

Buy an Electronics Projects Kit and learn to do the projects then buy a car inverter kit and build that project.

That's how I got some of my experience and knowledge by building
projects, a code practice buzzer was my first kit.
I still build kits for self education, personal pleasure and teaching
electronics to my grand kids.

This OUGHT to be a HF transformer - and all bets are off for the costing and sourcing....

Not a DIY project sorry - Also how will you charge the battery there isn't any such thing as a free lunch.

Better buy a generator.

I think i am able to build a 12v to 220 v 5000 watt inverter, just need a bit of help. i plan on using solar panels to charge a bank of about 3 deep cycle batteries, i just need to get a circuit diagram of a solar battery charger.

Sorry, you are wildly out of your depth. You really don't understand what you are asking for.

There in lies the problem - Your knowledge is limited (at present) or you would see that watts = amps X volts

So 5000 watts at 220 volts is 22.7 amps (5000w/220v)

and 80 amps, a more normal household supply, is 17600 watts. (220v x 80A)

Now what you get out has to go in (more or less minus any losses in the system) so 17.6 K watts at 12 volts is (17600w/12v) 1466.6 AMPS! That is going to be not only some battery array but some Solar array.

Remember no free lunch!

Its really not an easy project for someone well versed in the scene, let alone someone new to it .

I avoid heavy power engineering like the plague - there are too many pitfalls and problems.

For one thing, you need power electronics on the LV side that can handle over 400 A, steady state.

Now you can consider the magnetics. What chopper frequency do you want to use ?

Where to BUY BIG lumps of ferrite to fabricate the core ?

Then you need to build a full bridge PWM inverter, and the driver, switching 400A into the primary of your transformer..

I dont realy understand what u are saying here, but i get the idee that u are talking about a high voltage unit.
I dont want to build a high voltage unit, just a low voltage 12v to 220 v 5000 watt inverter that i can run my flat and totally disconnect the eskom lines. the max amount of amps that i would use is about 80 amps.

If you don't understand what he is talking about then you will never be able to wrap your head around designing the kind of inverter you want to build.

What your talking about building is a high voltage unit. Yes the input voltage is low but what your trying to accomplish is a high voltage output. The kind of thing that can kill you if you don't get things right.

BTW 3 deep cycle batteries will not last long running an inverter that big. Even with 6 batteries running a 110V 1000W inverter will only last a few hours and it could take a couple of days for a good set of solar panels to charge them. Also you need to check your math. If you plan on using a max of 80A on a 220V line that over 17000W you will need. A 5000W inverter won't come close to covering it. The most you could get out of a good 5000W inverter is 22A. Enough to run a TV, Microwave and possibly a small computer.

When people add solar power to there homes they don't come completely off the grid. The technology isn't as efficient as it needs to be to take people off the grid. Anyone who is off the grid with solar has a fairly large array of panels filling up a quarter acre lot and a small storage shed near the house filled with batteries, chargers and multiple inverters that feed into the main breaker in the house.

If you want to help supplement your power needs then do it right and buy an inverter.
