when you guys do videos, do you write out your script? Answered

Just curious how you guys go about doing videos.  I recently did several for my instructable, and man did it take a long time.  Mostly because I'd stumble or mumble and have to start over.  I finally called it quits and just used what I had rather than really producing what I wanted.

Do you guys write out a transcript or something before hitting start on the camera?

A while back, instructables had the 30-second video contest.

Anyway, it seems like the public has a short attention span and DIY instructional videos should be at the max a minute long at the most and you only have a few moments to grab them in the start to get them to watch through. That said, you learn to be succinct, concise, and to the point. Oh, I am more graphically oriented so I just let the pictures do the talking.

I tried writing a script once, I sounded very stiff. Also it's hard to predict at what pace the video will end up going. So I just do a really rough edit, the video usually ends up being like 10-15 minutes long at that point. Then I trim down as I record the voice over, by the time I'm done it's 3-5 minutes.

No transcript for me. I tend to throw away 15 minutes of shot footage for every minute included. I've heard of productions with 70:1 ratio.
