They will pass by, and if they like your pond, they will stay; quite likely they will breed.

I'm about to dig a hole for a new pond and really hoping to get great crested newts
] breeding in it. I know we've got them in the area as I rescued 2 from an old watering can last year.

If you're in the UK, you can't - newts are protected, so that you need a license to relocate them.

However, there are clubs and organisations that could point you in the right direction.
