Intro: Use a Xbox 360 Power Supply to Power a Amplifier

i was looking around for a wall power supply to use for my car amp to use in my house, but all of the other 12 volt power supplies either didnt have anough watts, or said they were 12v when the multimeter said 14v, or both. so i screwed around with the xbox power supply becuase it was like 150 watts. The way i tricked it into thinking the xbox was on, was i took a peice of wire and connected the two wide pins that are on the bottom of the plug in together, not the middle. As showed in the picture. Then the six pins that are alike, the top pin is negative, and the bottom right pin is positive. As showed in the picture.

NOTE: is you wire the pins wrong itll turn the power brick led will turn red, all you have to do to restart it is unplug it intil the led tunrs off, Done.

I did this awhile back I have a 1000watt 2 channel amp hooked up to a 10" jl audio and also 2 sony door speakers and I'm having a problem with it all of it shutting off randomly

Me too exact same wattage amp a Sony 1000 2 channel and I have a 12n. Kicker vrcomp sub and two mtx 6×9s.. I have plugged it directly into wall outlet and still it kicks off if I have amp turned up some I can barely raise volume and it shuts off of I have amp turned down then I can turn up some before it kicks out Grounded directly to power brick so idk what else it is???
Here's a pic of my flashing light rig
I cut the cable for a 12v flashing light project. At 12V 14.7A, it was perfect for the flasher bulb wattage. There is: 3 yellow 12V wires, 3 black negative(-) wires, 1 blue reference((turn on(-)) and 1 red 5V reference((turn on(+)). Simply twist the red and blue together to turn the 12V on (or install your switch here). All three yellow wires and all three black wires can be respectively twisted together, for one high wattage output, or can power up to three low wattage outputs (in parallel of course).
Thx mate nice and simple, and alot neater looking than a pc psu. Gut mine in ma lair
Thanks for the instructable. In case you need to in the future...you can run an amp off of 14v just fine (I wouldn't go much higher). Though we all learn that a car's electrical system is 12v the truth is more often than not it's not exactly 12v. If you need to wire up a headunit to a wall-wart and all you have is 11v, that should work too.
- Disclaimer: This isn't meant to mean voltage doesn't matter. I hope nobody reads this and decides to wire their amp directly into mains voltage.
