Periodic table of condiments

Nope, that isn't a typo. You've heard of the periodic table of elements? Well, check out this hilarious table of condiments that periodically go bad. From Condiment No. 1 (Mayonnaise, which the table says goes bad in 3 months) to Condiment No. 75 (Maraschino, which apparently never goes bad), you can look up just about any condiment you can name to see when you need to toss it out. Or at least when these people think it goes bad.Take it with a grain of salt (Condiment No. 2, it never goes bad!) though-it claims Lemon goes bad in 2 months. Stuff and nonsense. I've eaten 3 month old lemons that were perfectly good.Mendeleev would be so proud...

My first Free3D print

Three months ago I submitted instructables into one of the challenges, and was selected to received Free 3D print. I chose to have my 3x3x3" 3D print instead of a famous 3D instructable robot. Two weeks ago, my 3D print got delivered in the 123D box, to my door. Also included in the box are an instructables patch and stickers. My 3D print is the case for my RevIO, an Arduino compatible board. A prototype that I'm made recently. (https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-The-RevIO-Arduino-Clone-My-Way/) Thank you very much for the Free3D Print program and everyone behide this program, otherwise I won't be able to see my project moving forward to this point. Chevy Flip Car Key Fix

I have one of those older flip Chevy fobs. Well the key broke off the fob so it's just a piece a metal and I use the fob to turn the ignition. I am looking for a fix with maybe like sugru or something to make a top portion to make it look like a key again.  Any ideas??? or plans of action? don't want to fork out another 100$ a key.

Railbiking. Anyone built one?

I heard an interview today with author William Least Heat-Moon.  In his latest book, he meets a man who has built an outrigger bicycle he calls a "Railcycle", which he uses to ride on disused railroad tracks all over the world. Curious, I did some searching, and found a number of places on the web where people are talking about this, but they all seem outdated. Bentley Railbikes Railbike Tours Homebuilt Railbike Has anyone else heard of this practice?  Do you know of anyone currently making and riding such contraptions?  Do you have one of your own?

Make your own "Memory Foam"?

Can we make our own "memory foam"? I'd like to buy "memory foam" in a spray can - but I don't think that product is available. I was hoping to find something like "tempurpedic" in a spray can.    I'd like to replicate the really soft top layer as seen in those mattresses. The "great stuff" foam spray cans come to mind.  However, the end result of those is not a flexible soft foam. Would like to fabricate my own custom foam inserts with the material.  Any ideas about making or sourcing materials? Thanks!

What 3D printers can do... and what they can't

3D printers have seen insane amounts of attention in the past year with lots of stories coming out about how amazing they are. How they can make replacement parts for anything that breaks. How they’ll revolutionize manufacturing. How everyone will have one and they’ll do everything that you need ever. Long story short, 3D printers are pretty amazing, but they aren’t quite the miracle on a stick that the hype is pushing them to be. So let’s sift through and see what there really is to get excited about right now. Consumer 3D printers AKA what most people will be using The 3D printing that’s available to consumers right now is fused deposition modeling or FDM. These printers build up a model layer by layer by extruding ABS or PLA into the build area. It’s basically a much fancier version of a glue gun. A tiny glue gun controlled by a computer, that is. These 3D printers typically run $1k - $2k, but smaller ones can be had for as little as $200. The MakerBot Replicator 2 is the most popular printer of this kind, but there are dozens of others to choose from as well. With some fiddling and work you can pretty much print any shape that fits inside the build volume. So if the printer can fit it, you can make it. That’s simplifying it a bit (OK, a lot), but that’s the idea, and it’s a very cool idea. After some practice you can learn how to design new things like jewelry, ornaments, or toys. Since everything is printed out you can customize any piece that you’d like. Take a couple hours to learn 123D Design and you’ll start to have new things to print out. That’s the power of 3D printing right there. You can quickly go from an idea to a design and then to reality. Your skills in making things by hand don’t matter here. This is why it’s so amazingly helpful to use a 3D printer for prototyping your ideas. I recently worked on a flash drive case and the first model took about 2 minutes to design. After that it was about 15 minutes to print out on a Replicator 2. Then I tested it and adjusted the design for another print. I repeated the process a few times and within 2 hours I had a file that I was happy with. This is even better considering that I only spent about 20 minutes of those 2 hours actively working. The rest was spent on other non-related work. All about the materials So that’s the power of 3D printing. With services like 3D Creation Systems you can upload your file and get it printed on much fancier machines with better resolution. There’s no immediate gratification, but you still get a high-quality print quickly and access to more materials. Even with this expanded selection of printing materials, it’s still a very limited selection. If we were just to look at all the plastics out there we’d be here for days. There are thousands of them and that’s just plastics. There’s also wood and metal and more beyond that. Each different material in this insanely huge selection has a different quality to it. I’ve seen countless people print out items in ABS or PLA and complain about how their printer must not be working since the printed piece doesn’t work like the original. But of course we can’t recreate every item out there with a couple kinds of plastic. It's about using 3D printing with other tools The key forward in using 3D printing is to use it as an amazing new tool of forming great pieces to work alongside all the other great items and materials out there. Why bother making a weak spring out of plastic when you can drop in a metal spring? So 3D printing isn’t everything, but it can be used alongside most everything. It can get us where we want to go so much faster than before it’s ridiculous. But it’s still not the miracle on a stick, not the only tool we’ll ever need from here on out. When the hype dies down we won’t be looking on at amazement at something being 3D printed, we’ll be looking at lots of awesome new things that were made faster with the help of 3D printing. And that is going to be incredible.

3D Printer; After plastic cools, begins to separate; what could be causing this?

I just got a 3d printer and my first design came out fine; however, the plastic has a tendency to separate after it's been printed. I've tried preheating and angling the design in a different way; as well as playing with printing speeds and feeds. Any thoughts on what could be causing it?

The ultimate challenge?

There are always good contests available for those keen on competing, but what about a real challenge that might run for many months? I am talking about rediscovering ancient technologies and ways of creating things. We have a lot of evidence that is in massive contrast to what archeologists want to make us believe. Be it the way the pyramids were build or just in what timeframe, the use of technologies thought to be impossible at that time or just the knowledge of things like star constellations that are not not visisble to the naked eye. In a lot of areas it seems not only archeologists but also some "secret powers" try to put a hold on discovering what was really possible thausands or maybe even millions of years ago. Things like the knowledge of distand star systems that are invisible to the naked eye might never find a suitable explanation. But what about tools and technologies used to create stonework that is hard if not impossible to create with our modern tools and technologies? I dare everyone to participate in the impossible! We know thausands of years ago milling, drilling, machining and lathe work was done but we have no real clue how it was done. At times when the rest of human kind was happy using stone tools and otherwise just hunt and gather for food some areas saw an explosion in technology. Within less than a few hundert years some builders in Egypt went from simple and explainable works to stuff impossible to do in today times. Same for India, the UK and the american continent. No hardend steel tools were ever found, no machines, no evidence on the how to, just the perfect work. Here is the challenge I propose: Come up with: 1. A way to cut or drill granite and harder rocks without modern tools or tech and still do it faster and more accurate. 2. A way to match hard rocks to each other with a precision down to less than a mm - as shown in many ancient buildings preferably on a big scale. 3. A way to create delicate carvings in hard rocks, things like hollow heads less than 5cm in size or cravings with spaces of less than 3mm wide and several cm deep - as shown in many India sculptures. 4. A way to build a lathe capable or turning several tons of steel with an accuracy better than half a mm and without electrical or combustion engines. 5. A feasable way to transport and accurately position several tons of stone - again without electricity or combustion engines. 6. A way to create sculptures with an accuracy shown by the ancient Egyptian ones, meaning perfection... 7. .... I could go on but I guess you get the picture ;) The solutions could be as simple as using sound and vibration or as complicated as finding a way to create tools hard and durable enough to proove the archeologists are right after all. And before you cry out that it is impossible: Consider the evidence! We know it was done but we don't know how, so let's show the world how we at Instructables solve the problems noone can explain ;) I can't offer any real contest, prices or such but maybe someone is reading this and willing to provide the base and soem prices?

Heat storage device for car cabin heater

I want to increase the heat storage capacity of the existing car heater so that I can run the heater (just the fan and a liquid pump) while the engine is off and so I can have a warm car as soon as I start on a cold day. The current heat storage is the coolant circulating in the engine. I want to increase the capacity of that. Instead of simply attaching a liquid reservoir to the heater circuit (to increase the coolant volume), I was considering using a picnic cooler (insulated) box with a coper tube coiled in it. The box would be filled with oil and paraffin. Paraffin melts ≈ 40° C  and I can take advantage of the latent heat of fusion when the paraffin changes phase. The oil is a medium to suspend the paraffin. I need a recommendation of an electric 12 volt pump to circulate the fluid. I request any other thoughts or criticisms.

Is it illegal to use bicycle trailers?

Right, so I want to build a bicycle trailer that will carry a kayak and also is used for something else, but that's for an iBle, and not the point. As we all know, bicycles are considered vehicles in all 50 states. But, trailers that are pulled by motor vehicles have to have registration and tags. Is it so with bicycles? I don't want to break any laws, so if anyone has an answer, I'd appreciate it!

Powering car LEDs via USB

Hi guys, I've always wanted to make my car (my parents car :'c ) a little bit more fun, It's a 10/11 year old ford fiesta without Bluetooth/USB. Here's what I would like to do, just wondering if anybody can see any problems with this. I know very little about power or how electronics work. Help requested for purchase of components

Hi. I'm a newbie to embedding but I have a project that needs this and there is no commercially available solution that I can find so I need to learn how to build it myself. This can and will be done in modules... I figure I can tackle one task at a time until I end up with a complete working system, but use the system in the meant time, as I get it completed. The main goal is for an electric motorcycle conversion dashboard,  which will include a password protected relay switch "ignition key" to power the vehicle on securely (Task #1), a user configurable display to show speedometer, odometer, tripometer, clock, battery pack voltage, motor rpm/temp, controller temp, coolant temp, etc via a waterproof rugged tablet (probably a Windows 10 tablet, probably with an Android emulator installed). I'm finding that there are so many different options available, I don't know what to purchase. I want to spend my hard earned money wisely and just buy what I need the first time. Instead of learning the "hard" way, I want to learn the "smart" way. Please help me get started. Thank you in advance!

Is there a way to use Solar energy to power an attic space

I am wondering if there is a way to use solar energy to power a room through solar power. I have an attic space that I would like to finish in my home, however, I think it would be cool to use solar panels, inverters and batteries to power the rooms (electrical outlets and lights) is there an easy way to do this?

ELECTRONICS: PLEASE HELP - Plant moisture sensor not working - or is it me???

Can anybody PLEASE help, I am in the UK and eager to grow melons next spring. I need to know when the roots of the tub need water so decided to make a moisture sensor. I found a ‘plan’ online, bought about £20 of components (I need to make  two sensors) and have spent all afternoon TRYING to get the online schematic to work. One attempt was connected via a circuit board and the other in air connections. Neither attempt works, the LED comes on on both attempts but does not go out when the terminal probes are put in water, as they would when the plant roots are moist. i enclose the original internet schematic and a (poor) picture of my ‘‘air connection’ version....should this plan work? And if so, why isn’t it? thanks in anticipation

DIY Mini Drill Machine

Hi everybody! I have bought a mini drill chuck from banggoog.com. But unfortunately it's hole is smalle than my DC motor. i don't even know the motor I have is 12v or 6v but i have ran this motor on 12v but i didnt burnt. its tip is bigger than my drill chuck. Any ideas how I can fix this?

sidecar wheel position

I've looked up sidecars on google and found lots of information for sidecars on vehicles that have front steering only in which case the sidecar wheel tends to be positioned parallel to somewhere between the midpoint and the rear of the vehicle, however if the vehicle has both front and rear steering would the sidecar wheel be best positioned parallel to the exact midpoint or not?

4 wire touchscreen

Hello, I'm currently trying to use a touchscreen that has 4 wires but 8 pins. I have a connector with 8 outputs, but I read some topics about touchscreens and everybody uses just 4 of them. So, right now, I'm using just 4 pins (It works with some noises) and my question is: If I use the 8 pins it will be better? If yes, how to connect them? Single Piston Air engine

Hi all, need help/ advice in designing a single piston air engine, It is part of a mechanical engineering course I am currently studying, the only parameters i was given are - Single cylinder with vertically displaced piston with rotation of the input shaft on a horizontal axis - free standing with an operating envelope of 300mm x 300mm x 300mm - accommodate a nominal piston diameter of 20mm - engine capacity of 6.0cc / 6000mm (cubed) Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance

Motor assisted pedal powered rail rider

I am trying to build a 2 person human powered Vehicle that is also motor assisted, I need a way 2 people can pedal at diffrent speeds and drive the same axle. What I think I need is some sort of differential gearbox. What Ii need to know is: Is there is a differential that can take 2 different input speeds and have one output? If it did and I also pushed it with a motor would the wheels spinning feed back though the gearbox and send the pedals spinning like crazy? Any help or advice people can offer would be great.

Tinkercad is great for beginners, while 123D is slightly more advanced with features.  Does anyone prefer one over the other for different reasons?

Using Neutron radiation from Aluminum foil is this Legal to do?

I am wondering if I expose plants to Neutron radiation and carefully burn them afterwords.at 500 deg C is this safe and more importantly is it Legal?? I plan to use a 4% thorium Rod (Welding Rod). What about Beta and gamma radiation is this Legal. I heard on youtube it is as long as you Properly dispose of the seeds.  I did a similar Project with clover a few cm away from a total of 20,000 volts 35 mA power supply and dosages above 400 volts per meter squared killed the clover plants very quickly. I sterilized the soil and seeds with bleach and incinerate it with High heat 500-600 degrees C. I washed by draining most of the bleach out of the seeds.

So, i'm a star wars fan for some time now and I've always wanted to start on a dream project, i wanted to create a real life Star Wars Speeder, having the technology that we have right now i think it's possible, now the thing is, i need to find a motor(s) big enough to lift a 185lbs guy off the floor, i don't really want it to fly like an airplane but more like hover a few feet off the ground, maybe 2 or 3 feet and make it move forward... for forward movement i'm thinking of the concept of thrust vectoring. i'm still on the planning/drawing stages of it... any suggestions from the experts???

Need help driving a wheel with a 180 degree servo

So for a Electrical Engineering class I have we were given a challenge, to design a robot that can go a certain distance on carpet using only servos and 3d printing (and any sensors we would like to use). I want to know if anyone could tell me if it would be possible to drive a wheel using only a servo. Maybe the same type of drive that trains use? If someone has any ideas that could help I would appreciate it.

Servo SM-S4304R

After long time of searching, without success, i would like some help. I purchased one Sm-s4303r servo motor. My questions are: 1.How can i do it work for 3 seconds at normal speed and to stop it for example 12hours. To work 2 times per day. 2.What will be the suitable servo which can do 180° in every movement. I mean 180° now and the second (to complete the cycle 360) in 10 hours.. After reviewing my latest posting, I noticed that I was able to zoom and rotate the STEP files included with the graphics.  Dumb question - has the STEP file viewer always been included on Instructables or is this a relatively new feature?  Anyway, it's a nice feature for people that want a better understanding of the part.

Children's Electric Car

I started to build a pedal car for my granddaughter and fell victim to "Project Creep". What started off as a simple, standard style pedal car modeled on a Type 59 Bugatti grew to a 6' long soapbox style car that will need an electric motor to move it.  I am a DIY guy and i have the plans, materials lists (it will be wood) and motivation.  What I don't have is a parts list for the electrical components nor do i have any idea how big the motor should be, e.g. 500W, 750W,750 gigawatts.  I wish there was just a kit that had all the components from accelerator pedals, gears, motor and a way to connect the whole thing to the 16" bicycle tires.  I don't need it to go 20MPH (she'll be 4 by the time I'm finished) but i don't want flimsy - i tend to overbuild things: why use two bolts when three will do? So, the question is what do i need and where do i get it - the first part is the most important.  I promise i will document the whole project with pics and words from concept to test drive - but i need help.

I need HELP figuring out what this part is called.

I bought a Halloween tree from home depot, they said I can't return it. The arms are supposed to move, they don't and I can see whats wrong with it and it is an easy fix. However, I have no clue what the part is called. Heres the tree: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Accents-Holiday-72-in-LED-Animated-Tinsel-Ghost-Tree-TY116-1724-1/301148800 The arms are connected to a screw and a plastic piece and that same plastic piece has a hole on the other end that connects to a shaft or cam and wheel on the motor then it moves. I need that plastic piece, I hope someone somewhere knows what its called and hopefully where it is.

Project needs help

Ok. So I am printing a 3d model of the ghost from destiny... and it has a small LED light that activates when I twist the body. I'd like to make a hologram that spells the words "Hello Titan". I have seen some people use simple Holographic paper pyramid but how could I do this? After this is done I want to put a speaker with a pre recorded voice that says the same thing everytime the light activates? (Help would really be appreciated :)

SMPS to Bench Supply - Help

Hi There, I want to make a bench supply using my old SMPS. I have seen many tutorials and I've some questions which I need assistance with. My SMPS says 12 V @ 25 A, 5 V @ 10 A and so on.. In tutorials I see people soldering all the same colored wires to one output 12V, 5V, 3.3V and so on. So, if we do that and I connect a 12V device that operates @ 2A or 3A  to the 12V ouput @ 25A in SMPS that we make, will it fry my device. If so, how do we control the current to supply 12V @ 2A only. I want to make a bench supply with below specifications. Can I do that? 1. I want 2 to 3 outputs each for 12V, 5V and 3V. 2. I want to regulate the current for each such socket mentioned in clause 1 to 1A, 2A, 3A and so on.. Is that possible? If so, how any instructions? Thanks, Avinash B

Servo Position

Hey i was trying to control the servo using joystick(potentiometer). i am but stuck at a problem when joystick is at center servo is at 90° when i move the joystick to left, servo sets at 0° and when i release the joystick it came back to its 90° but when i move the joystick to right, the server does sets to 180° but does not come back to 90° on release the joystick, it sets to a little more than 90° like 100° what could be the problem ? #include Servo servo; int sp ; int js_x; void setup() { servo.attach(3); } void loop() { sp= map(js_x ,0 ,1023, 0, 180); servo.write(sp); }

Difference between all the X,Y and Z axes?

Hello, I am new here and only registered to get access to a CNC build which I really like. Now m questions is, as I look at so many of the builds, what defines the axis? Some use Z to go up and down, others mentioned it being the Y-axis, even saw a few saying X. Is it up to the builder or up to the software? Kind regards, Red

Building a custom shaped Compressed air tank

Hello, am looking into the possibility of building my own paintball markers, and wanted to do a custom way of using the air system, compared to most markers. I was thinking either a square shape, but after finding an article that was talking about water and gases tanks and why they are build cylindrical, i realized that maybe that might not be as easy or practical. another possible idea would be a flask shaped tank, but for the design am looking at it would need special commendations, none the less I wish to see if something like that could be possible.

Home portable generators have a 2 pole  roto with windings on it uses 24Vdc what I want to know is how many windings are used on each pole Does it matter if the windings are 100 each or 50 or what ever For argument sake lets us a Honda 3500watt generator I have been at this for weeks and cannot get a answer Hope some can help  Tim Murphy

where can i find pure copper and zinc strips?

I need several strips of copper and zinc for a science project but its frustratingly hard to find zinc anywhere in the Seattle area. I have already tried the local electronics store and plumbing store. Can you guys suggest anything not outrageously expensive and within an hour driving distance?

I accidentally invented a device to collimate any light source into a concentrated beam... what should I do with it?

I've been umming and ahhing about what to do with this for the couple of weeks since I accidentally invented the thing (I was working on a solar energy device), and I thought you guys may be your usual well-spring of help and advice. Basically I seem to have designed a device which will collimate an extended light source. Any light source. So you could, for example, turn a 100 Watt light bulb into a 100 Watt laser. Or a square meter of sunlight into a kiloWatt. I haven't made it, but simming on the computer gives an optimal blow out rate of about 1/2 meters per kilometer, so over a range of meters or tens of meters it's pretty much as accurate as a normal laser. The only upper limit I can see on how much power you could put through this thing is when the materials start melting, which would probably be pretty high. There's really nothing fancy about it, it's just a shape. You could print it out easily on a 3d printer and fill it with some kind of settable glass for the total-internal-reflection. It would weigh about as much as a 2 litre bottle of water and be about the same size. I was concerned about it being weaponisable, but even at a kiloWatt the lethal range would probably be less than 100 meters, in which case you might as well just get a gun. I don't know if anyone's already done something like this, I can't find anything online, and people kept telling me it was supposed to be impossible. So, um, yeah...

Old Engineering Exercise

Hello all! I was just looking through various Maker projects, here and elsewhere, and was reminded of a collage engineering exercise I was told about growing up.  Apparently, they don't do it any more.  My education is only up to an Associates Degree in Drafting and Design, and I never got this at that level. This exercise (near as I can remember) consisted of a student being given a piece of aluminum (I think) and a set of files, a caliper, and a few other small tools.  The student then had to turn the piece of aluminum into as near a perfect cube as they could, using only those tools. Has anyone out there heard of this exercise before?  Maybe done it themselfs? Namely wanted to through this out there, see what people thought.

Remember CNC machining the prize?

Hi,  Wonder if anyone can help.  I remember sometime in the last 3 years there was a competition where one of the prizes was a cash voucher for a machining service. Like Shapeways but for CNC machining.  Just wondered if anyone remembers what the service was called? I have been asked to re create a spinning wheel and thought it would be cool to use there services for a part which would be very difficult for me to make otherwise.  Any help would be ace. :)
