Slow down cars with trees.

Traffic calming schemes are frequently unpopular with drivers; speed bumps and oddly-placed bollards make life uncomfortable. In Norfolk, England, a new scheme is being presented that slows traffic without even touching the road or obstructing the driver. Two hundred trees have been planted at the boundaries of villages suffering from speeding drivers, and it is the trees that fool drivers into slowing; they are in rows down each side of the road, and as they approach the village, they get slightly closer together, and slightly closer to the road. Seen only in the driver's peripheral vision, the trees give the same subliminal visual clues as increasing speed would, and drivers respond by unconsciously slowing down.  The illusion has slowed traffic by an average of about 3km per hour. The illusion has been used before (rumble strips on the approaches to roundabouts are spaced more and more closely together to create an audible illusion of acceleration), but the more subtle nature of the tree-planting makes it less obvious, and thus harder to resist.  Provisionally seen as a success, more detailed, longer-term results are to be presented to the Department of Transport in the Autumn, with a view to rolling it out on B-roads nationally. LED bike tires

We've seen all sorts of ways to light up your bike. Here on Instructables people have used LEDs, cold cathode lights, and even fire. Now a company called Cyglo is making new tires that light up with LEDs. They are powered by the spinning of the wheel. When the wheel isn't spinning you can see the individual LEDs. They blur together when the bike is moving for a persistence of vision effect. They're not on sale yet, but hopefully soon. And then there will be one more way to be brilliant while riding at night. Weed Whacker-Powered Bicycle

This is a bike I built a year ago. It uses a 30.5cc (about 1.5hp) weed whacker engine for propulsion. A version of the same thing was on Instructables, and that's what partially inspired me to make this. ;) The engine mounts are made out of wood, because I still have not learned to weld, but they hold up just fine. The engine is an ten-year-old Echo weed whacker. It has 10,000 max RPMs. The bike peg attached is 2" in diameter and gives about 25mph top speed. There is no clutch! The one that came with the engine was way too flimsy for a vehicle like this so I took it out. Saved a lot of space, too. For the throttle, I disconnected the back brake line and connected it to the engine. The front brakes are still intact, and you can turn the engine off to slow the vehicle as well. I added the extra heatsink to the engine to help keep it cooler, as it was never meant for this kind of exertion. It gets as hot as the engine, so I guess it conducts the heat away pretty effectively. There is a 10-LED bargraph to show the engine temperature. It uses an LM3914, an op-amp, and a thermistor. There is also a 555 to drive a buzzer when it gets too hot. The bike has head and taillights that are both driven from a joule thief. They are not very bright; they are more for being seen than to see. Giant Jacob's Ladder Project

Many, a many moon, ago I found an old Popular Science Magazine that detailed how to make one --it was an old issue! Any ways, about 13 years ago when the builder's for our neighborhood left, I took the flag poles from the front office with the intent of making an enormous Jacob's Ladder. Well, cleaning out some brush I found them again and want to make it again. I am sure the transformer will have to be huge but I am willing to go forth on this project. Does anyone here have any experience on making a giant one?

electric bike

I am working on a motor bike that i had originally decided to go gas with but the motor dosent work anymore so i changed my mind and went electric. i was wondering if i would still need a jackshaft with an electric motor. it is a 24 volt motor out of  a powerchair.  i don't know specifics on tourque and hp, but it's pretty powerfull, and turns quite a few rpms. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

As reported in Physics World today, a team of Swiss and Dutch physicists have developed a novel tip for an atomic force microscope (AFM) using a single carbon monoxide molecule. The tip is stable enough to image individual atoms and bonds within molecules.The first image below is from the group's AFM of a single pentacene (C22H14) molecule on a copper (Cu(111)) substrate. The second picture shows the conventional chemical structure diagram (the vertices are carbon, and one hydrogen hangs off of each exterior corner), and the third is a "ball" model, with carbon atoms in black and hydrogen in white. As discussed in the article, the whole molecule is just 1.4 nm long, with a spacing of 0.14 nm between adjacent carbon atoms.The paper is out in today's Science, but it's pay-per-view.

Water Bottle Raft

Finished Project - https://www.instructables.com/id/Project_rRaft_Building_a_Raft_out_of_Water_Bottl/After thinking about Reishee and his island, I asked my mom if I could build an island from water bottles...the idea was rejected. I asked my mom if I could build a raft, and she said sure...so i've started collecting water bottles. Not only does the final result get me excited, but people's responses do as well. Of course there are those who think i'm crazy (as there are with any of my schemes), but there are so many more who just love the idea, and get enthralled in it. A friend in crew is going to empty the boat house recycling bin for me, a teacher told me that the recycling bin in the teacher work room is over flowing, many more offer to collect water bottles from their families, and bring in the 20+ bottles from their cars. I bring a bag to school to collect them, and collect bottles from people...just being a part of this great recycling project (I want it to be 98% recycled) excites people, so when they see one person donate a bottle, others will hurry to finish their water and donate it to the cause as well.The whole thing has just opened my eyes to how many bottles are thrown out, instead of being recycled...it's amazing. Just because people will probably be asking, this is my plan:Two large water bottle pontoons will be on either sideA wooden frame/deck will be clipped onto the pontoons via eye bolts and carabinersHomemade oarsThat's the basics...I hope to have some luxuries too:Big ole water tight cooler bolted onto the back for storageTwo stadium seats bolted onto the deck to sit onTo keep up with the raft, visit rraft.blogspot.com

Question Regarding Measurement of Vacuum Pump Air Flow Using Anemometer

Hello everyone, I am new to Instructables and am loving it so far. I was reading through some literature on a piece of equipment we have at work and it requires 18"Hg @ 25CFM. We have flow gauges at work, so it is just a matter of using one to determine the flow but it got me thinking... What is the most effective method of measuring airflow of a vacuum pump without a flow gauge. All I have is an anemometer, a basic understanding of physics and time. So I came up with this method and am looking for some folks to poke holes in it: I placed the anemometer at the end of a 36" piece of PVC with a 1.6" I.D. sealing the anemometer to the PVC to ensure no air gets pulled around the fan of the anemometer. The other end of the pipe is reduced to a 1/4" line (.16" I.D.) which is connected to the vacuum pump. Turning on the vacuum pump yields a steady 3.5MPH (307.98 ft/m)on the anemometer. Doing the math, I come up with 4.3CFM (307.98ft/m*.013962634ft^2).  Unfortunately, I cannot bring a gauge home from work to compare and I cannot bring my set up, as glorious as it may be. So this is more a thinking exercise. So what sort of accuracy would you guys think this 'rig' has? Can you think of some method for me to verify it's accuracy (or, more likely, lack thereof)?

Using "Phun" to simulate mechanisms

I'm not an engineer, and don't have access to Autodesk / AutoCAD, so I've been using Phun to simulate mechanical design.It's not strictly valid in an engineering sense, but it works pretty well for roughing out ideas. The polygons were created in Inkscape, then converted to Phun scenes with SVG2Phun. Some objects won't translate (like grouped objects), so it's necessary to simplify (hence the two images from Inkscape.)

Hi all, i want to ask in order to use less power (voltage, current or watt, i'm confuse about that) to light led. If i power up 100 leds blinking in parallel, blinking one by one, 50 hertz or higher, Am i get kWh (kilo watt hour) lower value instead powering 100 led without blinking...? Thx

My Patassium Chlorate isn't good

I have a patassium chlorate cell, it uses platinum electrodes. Ive tried to make chlorate with it 3 times, but what i get dousnt burn very well( it make sugar bubble). could this be the salt im using, i am using deitary salt( which is only 40% KCl ) and some other things.

Electric Handicap Scooter parts, any ideas???

Heya guys I just aquired and parted out a electric handicap scooter from a rummage sale for 20 bucks. It is a three wheeler. Batteries are dead (read, toast). Im tring to figure out what to so with the gearbox/motor assembly. It is all one unit. Im trying to think of some kind EV project. I thought perhaps putting some larger 26in wheels on the axle ends to gear it up, and make some sort of cargo trike. Any other ideas would be appreciated

Removing Bicycle Decals

Does anyone know of a good way to remove the decals from a bicycle, specifically a Mongoose Montana? On the Interweb, a lot of people say you can, but just as many others say that doing so will ruin the paint and mess up the clearcoat that is applied over the decals. Is there a way to tell if my bike has a clearcoat above the decals? If I can remove them, would heating them with a hairdryer aid the removal process? And the sticky residue - what's the best thing to get rid of it? Lighter fluid? Thanks!

Custom Droid Radio Mount

So I am the happy new owner of both a Moto Droid and a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. However these two products seem to show no love for the other, at the moment in order to both charge my phone and play music through the car speakers I am required to go through a very awkward series of steps and entangling wires that seem to be bent on strangling me. As an avid lover of customizing my own items I wondered "is there a way to make this simpler?" and realized: screw simplicity, I can make it WAY more awesome! And so my endeavor began. The Droid media dock can be interfaced into a faceplate in which you drop the Droid on it then slide it to the left, plugging in the phone into both the audio and the power. To the left of this is a smaller panel with the LED readout of what station the tuner is set to for when the radio is set to AM/FM, along with a volume dial, seek buttons, and buttons that switch the input between Aux, Cd, AM, and FM. The issue is I am a programmer at heart and have very little experience in electronics, I wrote out the binary circuitry with little to no problem, my problem is that I don't trust my novice skill when it comes to the calculations for volts and amps being received at parts of a circuit. I think this is a ridiculous project and is way more complicated than it should be, and that is why it is awesome and needs posted on Instructables! Once building really begins I will take lots of pictures and make a formal write up to put up! Thanks everyone for reading this rant/plead for help!

Machine that can shape water

The National Maritime Research Institute of Japan has a machine that can create shapes in the water such as hearts and stars. That's just the small one. The larger machine can make much bigger collisions between waves. There's some research around safety here to merit such a large setup, but I'm just happy with the splashes and the over-the-top reactions of the reporters. how do I build a chemical car?

Hello, my name is Taylor Love. Right now my school is having us do a science project where we need to use chemicals to propel a toy car across the room. sounds easy right? oh wait there's a catch. no combustion reactions, or explosions. :( got any ideas besides the usual baking soda and vinegar trick? any help would be great. if anyone knows how we could make a battery powered car go across the room, that'd be pretty cool too. but we have to make the battery from scratch.

ALL TERRAIN VEHICLES, ATV, are one of the most growing means of recreation. Many people ride ATV's in the mountain trails enjoying nature along the way. The scenery is really one that No TV can match either. Most people ride their ATV on forest Public  Lands which are "Managed " by forestry. ( at least they say they are....volunteers do more for the forest though) So why is it the US Government is working so hard at taking away our rights of recreating responsibly in our own lands? The USDA/USFS is attempting to close access to all forest lands making them monuments, in which case no person will be permitted to access them. If you or family or even friends recreate in the forest I highly urge you to let them know that we all need to unite in order to save these rights. Advocate in order to protect our rights to use our own lands responsibly. Education in this matter is available in many areas on the web. need help with 2 cycle motor

So i am having some severe issues with a motorbike i am building. i have an old 2 cycle mccholluch pro-scaper weed eater. i took it apart, cleaned it, put it back together with a brand new plug and it ran nicely. Now, a few days later, it wont even start, not even a putter. i have tried everything, even a hefty shot of ether in the carb, but still nothing. i know i am getting volts to the plug b/c i checked with my meter, but im not sure if im getting spark. it is a brand new plug. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Mattress-mobile propulsion

So my friends and I have built a mattress cart. It's basically this: http://s.sears.com/is/image/Sears/07180002000 with the sides down and support bars with a mattress and a box spring on top... So my question is: We need a way of making it go i.e. a motor or pedals or something. It can be gas, man, or electrically powered. Does anyone have any ideas?

Fireworks+Solar Igniter=?

High Voltage Amplifier

I am trying to build a high voltage amplifier that will amplify an AC signal of approx. +-5V to a signal of approx +-100V.  I was looking into building a common-source amp using JFETs or a common-emitter amp using BJTs, but both seem to have an output waveform of 0V to +100V.  Is there a way to modify these amps to have an output waveform of -100V to +100V?   Also, if anyone has any better Ideas, please let me know. Robo-Goat Lives - At least I hope he Will

OK here goes. I work at zoo and I am a self taught geek, (mainly old school). I recently volunteered for a project mainly because I'm too stupid to know that it's not possible :~) Purpose of the program/project To - Engineer, Design and Build an Animatronic Robot Goat for: a Cheetah Conservation Fund in Kenya, Africa. This device will replicate a live goat in: size; appearance; movement; sound and smell (smell supplied by others), that can withstand the sever conditions of the desert, durable, possibly solar powered and easy to transport, setup and operate. Note: Up until this point real goats have been tried but they have not been too successful. They were either too stressed or they were stolen for by locals their meat. Objective(s): To lure Cheetahs into an area and enticement them into a cage trap with a simulated live goat (Robo-Goat), to provide a safe humane and ethical capture of wild cheetahs so that recently acquired state of the art GPS/Cellular tracking collars can be placed on them to help gather information to preserve this endangered animal. Analog Radio Tracking Collars have provided the only way to gather much of the information for many different wild animals. Radio Tracking style of the past has always been a difficult and time consuming endeavor, with old style tracking, large heavy radio collars that broadcast a ”beep” continuously, must be tracked with specialized hand-held radios and yagi antennas. All this to locate an animal being studied. Many times you would have to get close enough to disturb the animal just to find out where it is and then try to track it. Obviously not good “normal behavior” data gathering. The new GPS/Cellular systems track the animal in real time and send back data coordinates on the animals location, elevation, speed and direction as it travels. This GPS information is sent via cell towers, (yes they have them in Africa), to a computer that logs and graphs the movements. The research gathered through these efforts may provide the answers to saving these endangered animals. Project design/methods: #1. Establish parameters Record video & audio movements and sounds of normal & panicked goats Research and study movements and demonstrate what mechanical requirements will be necessary to replicate the minimum needed movements - [DONE]. {Raise and lower head; Look left and right; open/close mouth} Determine movement engine {I'm not sure here} {All of the movements are really axial in nature} {At first I was thinking motors but then there are end stops, control systems, ect. Black powder is more of a reaction than a burn of fuel and oxidizer.

I did some experimenting with charcoal and saltpetre. While making a charcoal fire i threw in some saltpetre, usually saltpeter alone burns slowly with a molten residue left over, but when i added it to the fire it created a slow burning but intense and bright light that almost melted the steel basin the fire was in. So I did some investigating, firstly I took some 3mm charcaol chips and lit one, then I threw some saltpetre on, again a intense, bright flame appeared, while observing i found that the saltpetre creates a molten pool in which the charcoal 'dissolves', I tried this with sugar, to simulate a smoke mix, but nothing close happened. So it turns out that saltpetre burns sugar when mixed with it, but actually chemically 'reacts' with charcoal. I have a question to add to this, is there any other item in the world that reacts this vigourisly with saltpetre? And if you have some charcoal and saltptre to spare can you pls try this, its really amazing.

Solution to turning on/off gas: new pump design.

I've been working a couple weeks now on solving the problem I posted here on how to improve my pump design by alternating the feed of ethanol vapour. I got good feedback but ultimately all the solutions involved mechanisms which were going to be somewhat tricky to build and source, which is against the brief of the project I'm working on; being an open source solar tracker concentrator makeable from scrap. In the end I solved the problem by largely redesigning the whole pump. Since it's driven by boiling ethanol, rather than add an extra mechanism for turning the feed of vapour off and on, I reduced the amount of ethanol being boiled, so that it boils itself out after an appropriate period. The vapour is then able to collapse fully, which sucks in more liquid ethanol and refills the system. 1. At the bottom right is the boiler, which holds about 2-3 ml ethanol. 2. This boils and the vapour enters the 'chamber' (the half blue, half white (liquid and gas)), forcing out the liquid, which pours into the wheel, ending up in the main reservoir. 3. This continues until the eths in the boiler has boiled away to the extent that it can no longer overcome the rate of re-condensation in the chamber, which starts to suck, so to speak. 4. This draws liquid from the reservoir, which passes through the boiler, shutting off the boil, the pressure drops quickly and the chamber and boiler refill with liquid. 5. Two valves (the only moving parts, besides the wheel) keep all this going in the right direction. 6. Repeat. The wheel provides the motion for the solar tracker. It's not in by any means powerful or efficient, but the whole thing can be made from a bit of metal tube, some thin pipe, a glass jar and two valves from bike inner tubes (plus a paint tin, bike wheel bearing and some drinks cans for the wheel). I haven't had a chance to try it in the field yet, but powered by a candle it seems to work fairly well. Blog entry here, will post photos and videos when available.

Conductivity of heat through copper?

I have a piece of flat copper, 150 mm X 30 mm X 1mm thick. I put 50 watts onto one (150 mm) end, how much arrives at the other? so: Surface area: .00015 m2 Distance: .03 m thermal conductivity copper: 400 W.m-1.K-1

Man injects himself with computer virus?

It may seem strange, but a scientist has implanted an ID chip with a computer virus inside it into his body so that whenever he passes an ID scanner, the virus will copy itself onto the scanner and spread throughout the system. It was made to prove a point that if somebody were to create a virus for the ID chipping system, it would be easy and could kill somebody if they had, for example, a pacemaker. A scary thought!

can i use 1 speed controller (24v 350w) for x2 24v 350w motors????its for a electric cart?

Oompa-Loompa's Phun creations

Using the "Phun Physics Sandbox" program I created a few quality models.... enjoy. This forum will be updated every time I create a new post-worthy contraption. MotoCycle - A detailed motorcycle with shocks. MotoCycle_Penned - Self explanatory for Phun Savvy 'Iblers. Cool_Catapult - Semi-automatic catapult with a firing lever and destructable wall target. Offroad_Jeep - Cool detailed model of a jeep with enhanced suspension, however unrealistic the suspension may be due to its odd angle. Crashcar_2.0 - My second attempt at a crashcar that came out really sweet. This is one of my favorites!!! With decapitation-action crash dummy!!! Button of Mystery - Just a silly contraption I created one day while I was bored. HumveeInteractive_FINAL - A really cool little Humvee with various interactive parts. For some reason this seems to have a low density, although it's not any less than my other projects. -Note- that all controls for the contraptions are described in the info bar of the file, which pops up when you go to save the file.

Monsterbike is a serious bicycle

This video from YouTube user wautur shows off the Monsterbike, a brutal penny-farthing with what looks like a tractor wheel in front.
