CO2 hydrogenation (CO2 + hydrogen = methanol) how to ?

I am wondering if methanol production (as a byproduct of CO2 and hydrogen) would be possible as diy project  . I have been reading about CO2 hydrogenation that (as topic mentioned) would lead to methanol production. Methanol would be easier to store than hydrogen ,no needing special equipment (refrigerated containers ). Anyone familiar with this ? Mystery of the CO2 Balloons!

Filled some balloons w  co2  from dry ice in a soda bottle.   As expected, they act like a lens, a magnifier of sound. No mystery there. Just as a dense glass refracts light, the denser gas refracts sound. The mystery is why balloons filled with co2  leak down faster than identical balloons filled by mouth. Yes, there is some co2 in my exhaled breath, but it is mostly  n2,  and  o2.  I would hav expected the n2 and o2 to leak out more quickly, being smaller molecules. So whatzup wit dat?

Using CO2 for a Jetpack blast off smoke prop?

Hey Guys! I'm making a jetpack for this upcoming Halloween. It's going to have lots of moving parts and cool stuff using an arduino, but the most important feature I want is a thick blast off smoke effect. I have been looking online, and it appears to me that a CO2 fire extinguisher would be great. However, these are expensive and not easily modified to be electronically triggered. I've considered a paintball CO2 can and a Sodastream. Will either of these give me the effect I desire, and is this plausible? I'd like the smoke to be at least as thick as the stock photo I attached, hopefully thicker and stronger. Thanks! I'll be sure to post pictures when I finish.

Building a custom shaped Compressed air tank

Hello, am looking into the possibility of building my own paintball markers, and wanted to do a custom way of using the air system, compared to most markers. I was thinking either a square shape, but after finding an article that was talking about water and gases tanks and why they are build cylindrical, i realized that maybe that might not be as easy or practical. another possible idea would be a flask shaped tank, but for the design am looking at it would need special commendations, none the less I wish to see if something like that could be possible.

What could you do with two empty Crosman CO2 cartridges? Answered

My son has a little airsoft gun, and he gave me two (for now) empty 12g CO2 Crosman cartridges. They are so nice that I want not throw them to the waste. But I have them, and I don't know what thing could I do with them. Some ideas? (refrain from the obvious humor) Length: 8.5cm; Diameter: approx 18mm;  Metal: maybe stainless steel?

I saw yesterday at the animated engine site the co2 engine      and really like it , and i would to make it using PVC pipes and wood , but i could not find more details and information for that model i searched a lot (results are other type of co2 engines) so can any body help me for more details and info as patterns and directions to make it. how do I build a chemical car?

Hello, my name is Taylor Love. Right now my school is having us do a science project where we need to use chemicals to propel a toy car across the room. sounds easy right? oh wait there's a catch. no combustion reactions, or explosions. :( got any ideas besides the usual baking soda and vinegar trick? any help would be great. if anyone knows how we could make a battery powered car go across the room, that'd be pretty cool too. but we have to make the battery from scratch.

How to compress air into a hollow solid without a valve?

Hi  Really need some help with this one, have searched everywhere but cant seem to figure it out. I know there is probably a very easy solution i'm missing so please help. Basically I want to compress CO2 at around 80 psi into a hollow metal. I have drilled a micro hole and created an opening (about 2mm radius) into the metal. My problem is after I compress the CO2 in there how do I remove the compressor nozzle and seal the hole without the CO2 escaping.  The metal is small and there is no place for a valve. Is there such a thing as a self sealing removable valve? Or could I use a valve  with two openings and pump liquid metal (that would than solidify) and seal the hole so I can remove the compressor?

Volume of gas from given weight of dry ice?

I'm rusty on basic chem. specifically, molarity, molecular weight... Dry ice, frozen CO2 is sold by the pound. I'd like to know by working formulas, how much volume a pound of dry ice will fill once it returns to gas. Carbon has molecular weight ~ 12.  Oxygen ~16.  But I don't recall what those numbers represent. One mole of gas occupies 22.4 liters, but how much does a mole of CO2 weigh?

Does anyone know where I can get Schrader valve sized pipe/tube? Answered

Being the evil little scientist that I am, I was thinking about building an airsoft gun similar to this - - but shinier and a little more well built. My idea (for the basic gun structure/ mechanics) is to take some 7.7mm O.D./1.7mm Wall Thickness pipe and thread one end to fit into a female Schrader valve. I found the O.D. by just looking up schrader valve specs. on Wikipedia and the Wall thickness was found by the necessity to have a 6mm I.D. to fit the airsoft bbs. My question (actually questions) to you guys is 1. Where to get pipe like that 2. What type (brass, aluminum, etc.) would work 3. Would this - - work for threading said pipe 4. Would this work? Thank you for all of your answers and any other information pertaining to this project that would help me.

What are the cheaper possible methods of compressing a gas without using reciprocating or rotary compressor?

We are working on a project to compress a producer gas(N2: 50.9%, CO: 27.0%, H2: 14.0%, CO2: 4.5%, CH4: 3.0%, O2: 0.6%). It is just like a bio-gas. It can be used as a cooking gas or for any heating purpose. Any cheaper methods to compress such gas costing low price?

Is it possible to get gas out of a liquid other than by boiling?

Still putting my solar device together and I'm still having some trouble getting the working fluid (ethanol) to boil. Almost there. I was wondering tho if there's not an easier way. Is it possible to by adding heat, make a gas dissolved in a fluid bubble out. Like if you heat up something like pepsi, get all the CO2 to gasify. And, how would you get the gas back in?

Can I be held liable if someone injures themselves as a result of trying to duplicate my project ?

Example: I post a project of mine that explains an improved way to inflate water bottle rockets with co2 cartridges and the specific parts they will need and can get from their local hardware store.Someone then follows my instructions and is injured as a result of not following instructions,not taking the proper safety precautions,or just an unforeseen potential for injury that was overlooked by myself. Question? Can I be held legally responsible for this injury as I was the one who posted the project in question?

What to use for a small crucible?

I want to make a small backyard aluminium foundry, but I don't know what to use as a crucible. I've seen soup cans, but it says they rust away, and ceramic shatters. I've also seen things like the bottom half of a propane/co2 canister, but I don't have thing like angle grinders to cut it open.  Also, how would I make the foundry? I was thinking of laying down fire bricks in a pattern like this: (from top, looking down) []==== []  O []===O < blower ====[] with mud to fill in the cracks. Would this work? Thanks, josh1324 PS. How could I calculate the best lengths for a barrel of an air powered shotgun?

Hey there community, i have asked a couple questions here before and i appreciate your answers so very much. this is why i have come to you today again to ask anotger. first off, sorry fir my grammar and spelling errors  im on my phone. now on to my question... i am building an air powered shotgun because i love bb guns and pellet rifles. however, there is no pellet shotgun really out there on the market that is of good quality. so, i want to make my own. . i am following kip kays law rocjet paintball launcher design, but i want to put a barrel that has many .180 in. diameter tubes within it to contain the BBs. the thing that is going to powere it is a  12g co2 canister that is hooked into a paintball quick change cylinder. I know tyat i must do math in order to get the right chamber to barrel ratio. i want the enrrgy within the canister ti be put to use as efficiently as possible, that is so that i am not wasting energy and that i have enough energy. so, any help would be appreciated. thanks again

Sulfur-free black powder equation and burning temperature? Answered

I am trying to calculate the pressure that builds up in a closed vessel containing deflagrating gunpowder.  The web gave me several conflicting equations for 70% KNO3 : 30% charcoal gunpowder: 1.  6 KNO3 + C8H4O --> 3 K2CO3 + 8 CO + 4 H2O + 3 N2 Oxygen is unbalanced. 2.  6 KNO3 + C7H8O --> 3 K2CO3 + 4 CO2 + 2 H2O + 3 N2 Hydrogen is unbalanced. 3.  6 KNO3 + C7H4O --> 3 K2CO3 + CO2 + 6 CO + 2 H2O + 3 N2 Carbon is unbalanced. None of these equations have 70:30 by weight saltpeter to charcoal, and none is balanced.  To fix the weight: it is possible that the charcoal is not to be completely dry, and that there are a few water molecules hiding out, but there would have to be 8:1 water to charcoal molecules for equations 1 and 2, and 9:1 for equation 3.  To maybe fix the balance and masses: if the charcoals had a coefficient of 2, equation 1 would need 1:2 water to charcoal, equation 2 would need 2:2, and 3 would need 3:2.  This is assuming that the saltpeter is carrying no water. Potential equations with 2 moles charcoal and carrying water to achieve the right weight ratios and balances are following: (I offer two potential equations each because I lack a reactivity series table and know not how extra atoms would come together.  Please alert me if the following equations are just B.S.) 4. a.  6 KNO3 + 2 C8H4O . H2O --> 3 K2CO3 + 3 N2 + 11 CO + 4 H2 + H2O + 2 C ? 4. b.  6 KNO3 + 2 C8H4O . H2O --> 3 K2CO3 + 3 N2 + 7 CO + 5 H2O + 6 C ? Excess carbon would take oxygen from water, or stay carbon, or would the charcoal not be all used up?  I assume that the reactant water molecules will remain unchanged. 5. a.  6 KNO3 + 2 C7H8O . 2H2O --> 3 K2CO3 + 3 N2 + 11 CO + 8 H2 + 2 H2O ? 5. b.  6 KNO3 + 2 C7H8O . 2H2O --> 3 K2CO3 + 3 N2 + 10 H2O + 3 CO + 8 C ? Global warming, climate change, jelly fish attacks, changed ocean currents...We all know the highlights from the news but what is the real deal behind all of this?It can't be denied that burning fossil fuels with no regrets has an impact on our globe.CO2 and other gasses or elements have been trapped for thausands of years.We release them all into our atmosphere and while doing so keep adding more harmful stuff.So, of course it is easy to say that if we would have nver used our fossile fuels to this extent then our world would be unharmed and a happy place throughout.Even if we would ignore the impossible task of making it where we are right now without having used any fossile fuels: How much would it be different?If we trust the offical climate data that has been collected then it clearly shows a rise in so called climate changing emissions since our industrial revolution started.Be it data from the ice, core drillings or just sample taken from old canyons - the results are all the same.Since the late 1800's there is a steady rise in emissions, CO2 and all the other things we don't really want in our air.And for good reasons all these green advocates try their best to stop us from doing more harm.Since the 80's we started to actually care more, better engines, catalytic converters, cleaning mechanisms for our industiral waste and chimneys.But did it make any change or difference?About 40 years now some countries try hard to do it right, so this must show up somewhere?!Well it does not.You see countries like the US never really cared about climate or the enviroment if there was a cheaper and easier option.Just check how long it took them to even acknowledge that our climate is changing due to our interference...Then there is China and as we have seen with the olympics they literally have to shut down production so you can see for more than a few km...But the same is true for so many other countries.Like everwhere else the industrial revolutions comes sooner or later and as always the cheapest way is done first and for far too long.And with the delay in reactions and consequences it is now certain that the worst is yet to come.Of course there is also another side to the entire story - nature itself.We destroy it where we can to safisfy our need for being cheap.Ever wondered where all this cheap furniture is coming from?Or all the wood used throughout the world?Rainforests are disappearing, flora and fauna is destroyed.In most cases with a lot of fires as it is still the easiest way to clean up when done.Now add the vulcanic eruptions that increased over the past 20 odd years around the world.And if you dare all the bushfires or natural causes.Combined this causes a higher impact than all our burning of fossile fuels - and it adds to the mix.And this brings us back in time.Taking the records of climete conditions all the way back to before the dinosaurs showed us that we had periods of much higher temperatures than what we might see soon.CO2 level at some periods were so high that the earth literally was a green house.So why did we humans amke it anyway onto this earth if chance were so bad?Species adjust, evolve or go extinct, new ones appear...Well, unless you are a croc or so and really don't care about Darvin and evolution ;)Does that mean we are on the way to become a new species?Sadly no, because we are the cause of all our problems.We now use technology and science to adjust nature and the enviroment to our needs.It gets too hot? Well add an airconditioner, will you!?The ground water is too contaminted to drink? Well, why do you think we invented bottled water?!You need room for new homes? Don't mind the flood planes, just drain them and build, there was no flood in over 30 years...See, even if we would go fully green and honur nature around the world from today on.Even if we try to clean up the mess we already created.The effects of what we did over the last 40 or more years are still in progress and far from over.Like a good stew it keep cooking until it is ready to serve.But strenght comes in numbers!Like a virus we keep multiplying even in areas with very limited ressources.After all, we just import what we need..Natural selection is being eliminated so pharma companies can make a living too.From just over 40 years our "natural" life expectency increased now to well into the 80's.You are not fertile? No problem we have means to fertilise your eggs with the sperm from hubby!Already suffering badly from diabetes, asthma or other chronical illness? No problem, have some kids anyway.And just to top it always make sure to avoid natural foods in favour for processed and artificial ingredients.In nature the weak, the sick, the old, the malformed and incapable are a food source.We took this food source away, keet them around, care for them and make sure really everyone has the same chance in life.In life - but not in nature anymore!Social evolution meant that natural selection was no longer a requirement to ensure a strong "tribe" or hunting party.We compensated the drain on ressources and all pharma companies are still very grateful for this.No this is no weird rant on humanity or the idea of some mad person, it is just the naked reality we like to ignore.A horse breeder will not accept a weak and constanlty sick horse for his breeding stock.A broken leg, like for a cow usually just means the animal is put down.Some dog breeders still prefer to cull a few pups just because the color pattern is not nice enough or the ears are too short.Even if you just breed fish you o through all sorts of troubles to ensure you have the best genes available in your tanks.You think this is already going to far with the ideas, I know :(But we have real world examples highlighting the results of the exact opposite: Inbreeding and ignoring the defects in genes and health.The british royal family destroyed the italian and russin monarchies the same was the spanish and protugise, even impacted on the french.In times when there was no clue about genetic defects or deseases that can be dormant in females but very active in males, the british royalty simply kept providing tainted bloodlines to the other royal familes.No offsprings that are male and of good health meant the end of their monarchies.The british survived by allowing the common folk to join the blue blood lines and now it is common in all the monachrchies left in the world.Remove the carries, provide fresh genes to get a better diversity.Really no offence, but just look at Charles and Camilla ;)Jokes aside: the story of the european monarchies shows what happens if things go too wrong.From hunters a gatherers that either kept healthy or died out we eveloved to having a gene pool that is full of nasty surprises.Again no offence meant in any way or to any person!If we compare our world with a big aquarium than it might have eveloved like this:Once there was a bowl full of plants, guppies and lots of other fish and creatures living on each other.Over time the guppies learnt when the feeding times are and made sure they get most of the food.Slowly the other psecies had not enough room and food anymore, only the hunter had a good linving with the huge supply of guppies.Then the guppies managed to reduce the dangers from all predators around and started to really take off.Soon every guppy had only conerns about having a good life and enough food.The waste got more and more, the sick and ill too.The last hunter able to fight them died off as he too suffered from the wasten the changed enviroment and gnetic defects transfered.Now there is little plants left, guppies everywhere, crap everywhere and even those guppies only living a few months still manages to find a partner to ensure their tainted gene pool spreads into the general population.We have no tank owner getting the balance right again, removing the sick and weak, we humans just keep going strong and if the crap pile gets too high we put grass and houses on top of it....We humans don't like to be compared with fish, a virus or any other lower being for that matter.These hings just don't affect or concern us.And anyone who dares to do so anyway has a long list of nasty words thrown at them.Is it because we humans can't tolerate the truth?Or is because deep inside we all know but refuse to think about it?

Tips and tricks for UV curing glue, resin and coatings

Only a few years ago your only option to repair certain plastics, glass or even a broken crystal was epoxy based resin or the good old superglue.You might have already tried one of the 5-seconds-repair pens or tried your own UV curing nail polish art at home.For the later you might be lucky as the resins used here are optimised for the purpose and lights you get with them.Sadly even the best nail polish is no substitude for a glue as the material properties need to be different.One of the most common complaints when it comes to using some UV glue, like Kafuter or similar is that it never comes with instructions.Sould be straight forward but it is not free of problems.For example almost all commercail UV curing glues that you can buy require quite stirct procedures and for the light the right wavelenth(s).Resins and coatings can be even more painful here as they might also require you to stick to the correct temperature.Let's start with one thing you might have encountered already...The glue is definately cured and rock hard but the surface tacky and smeary.Quite annoying if you want to fix a piece of jewellery and can't prevent it from collecting dirt and dust...The next thing you might have encountered is that despite having transparent materials it seems to be impossible to cure the clue.Both problems come down to wavelenght and exposure.UV curing glue is prevented from curing in the presence of oxygen - a factor utilised for example in resin based 3D printers.Uncovered glue is exposed to the oxygen in the air and won't cure easy.The glue or resin below this layer however with fully cure with ease in the absence of oxygen.For the second problem consider that not all materials that you can see through will let UVC light pass through ;)Bonding strenght is another complaint I hear a lot...Be aware that certain things just are no good for UV curing glues or resins.Take the molds you get for that purpose: on the material the glue won't bond!Teflon is another prime candidate here.But in a lot of cases it comes down to surface preparation.Don't be afriad to sand the surface!Not only will the surface area increase but the scratch marks will be invisible once filled anyways.Use sandpaper on your fingernails, then go over with clear nail polish -mirror finish ;)With curing often a problem consider to fully cover the glue.A bit of clear sticky tape, food wrapping foil....If that is not an option then eliminate the oxygen.You can use a container filled with inert (for the glue) gas like CO2 or just place a burning candle in it until it goes out....Either way the amount of oxygen should then be low enough to cure the surface of your glue.Not always is any of the above an option.Then you can still try more power and a lover wavelength.Mercury based lamps for example provide a very broad and powerful light that in most cases will cure within seconds.For a proper surface cure you need a wavelength of 265nm or lower.LED's offering this exist but at prices well out of range for the hobby user.A mercury lamp under high pressure is nothing for short term use and the limited lifespan does not always justify the costs of buying them.Like with most things in life certain inventions can have a dual purpose.Quality germicidal lamp systems for examples often state to go as low or even lower than 265nm.And they come at a fraction of the cost you have with a broadband mercury lamp.Even cheaper is the fre weather forecast.If the sun is siad to be strong enough so you need protection than even the worst glue will fully cure in seconds outside in the sun - tackfree!Don't be fooled and protect yourself!!These tiny LED lamps for your glue stick, the curing thingies for your nailpolish and everything else using UV light comes with warnings.For very good reasons!It might be hidden in the fineprint but you can not really see UV light.The blueish-purple glow you see is on the high end of what comes out and by that in the visible range of your eye.Just because a LED only gives a faint glow you see does not mean the UV light wouldn blind you if you could see it!Even worse for fluoroscent lamps or open cruning systems like those for your nailpolish.Reflected UV light is still UV light and you can still NOT see it!Stories of people getting sunburnt from germicidal lamps in a butcher shop or other people going blind from checking money as their living have a true base...In most cases lamps used well past their lifespan or simply the wrong type of lamp but still: the damage came from UVC light...If you just love creating your own artwork or jewellery with UV curing resins and glues than protect yourself.Proper sunglasses with a stated UV protection for example or just black nitrile gloves for your hands...
