Experimental engine Answered

Would connecting like 2 or more single cylender horizontal engines like briggs and strattons together flywheel to shaft run as like a 2 cylender in line engine? or has anyone done it even? example : if      [0-     represents an engine with the [ being the flywheel, the 0 the crankcase/block and the - a shaft then this is my idea [0-[0-[0-  and so on like a two cylinder would be [0-[0- would this work? what would i have to do to get this to work?

Engine to Compressor? Answered

I am planning on making a very high volume compressor from a small engine.  I plan to adjust timing and stuff accordingly.  I just wan't to make sure an engine can handle the pressure.  I assume it can because of the explosions it can contain but I just want to be sure it can handle 125-200psi.  And also, is 2 stage really necessary or can I just push all the air in in one stage with a couple pistons.

Hi, My names Tom and I need a team of experienced engineers, biomedical engineers and programmers to try and design different biomedical devices. This will be a NON profitable team, so it would be more of a hobby than a job. But I will take anyone that thinks they will be helpful. Get back to me soon if your interested please, this would also be a great idea for students at universities or collages that want more experience. Thanks Tom

Engine Cumbustion & Etc.

I've been knocking around an idea in my head and I was wondering if anyone had an answer to a few problems associated with said idea. One of the problems/road-blocks is how do modern cars run? More specifically, is the gasoline that goes into the pistons for combustion an actual air/gas mixture, or is it air/liquid-gasoline? And is there a way to manually adjust the ratio of air-to-combustible? The reason I ask is because I was hypothesizing whether or not it would be feasible to replace gasoline with a more efficient combustible, and this combustible would greatly depend on what is actually put into a modern petroleum-based car engine's pistons. Thanks for any info!

Replacement minibike engine? Answered

I have a 2006 Mini Baja Minibike(http://www.bajamotorsports.com/categories/minibikes/products/WR65_baja-warrior-mini-bike) with more than a few problems. As of now, it won't even start, and I can't find the problem. I've cleaned anywhere that fuel goes, air filter, exhaust, and adjusted the carb,  it still doesn't start. When it was running, it didn't even idle. So I'm wondering, would an engine swap with this: http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/212-cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-69730.html engine work? It seems almost identical; but I"m not sure.

Old Engineering Exercise

Hello all! I was just looking through various Maker projects, here and elsewhere, and was reminded of a collage engineering exercise I was told about growing up.  Apparently, they don't do it any more.  My education is only up to an Associates Degree in Drafting and Design, and I never got this at that level. This exercise (near as I can remember) consisted of a student being given a piece of aluminum (I think) and a set of files, a caliper, and a few other small tools.  The student then had to turn the piece of aluminum into as near a perfect cube as they could, using only those tools. Has anyone out there heard of this exercise before?  Maybe done it themselfs? Namely wanted to through this out there, see what people thought.

International 345 v8 engine trouble? Answered

I have a 345 v8 international engine that will not idle. It runs fine if you rev it up but as soon as you take your foot of the pedal it will idle roughly for 20 seconds before stalling. I have put a new set of points in and also adjusted the timing correctly. What would be causing the engine to not idle. Also I have adjusted the idle screw and the place at which it will run is way to high for an idle so I can eliminate this as a problem. I have taken the top of the carby and can see that both jets are squirting as per usual. It has really got me confused this one. The only thing I can think of is vacuum advance but I can't see how it should effect it at an idle. Your help would be much appreciated.

can we use the magnetic attraction and repulsion in petrol engine? Answered

Instead of using compressing of gas using  combustion and passing gas and using spark plugs ..... shall we use a dipole magnet in the place of spark plug and and a magnetic piston with a pole on top side.if we rotate the magnet at the spark plug place ,when the opposite pole comes down .......the piston due to attractive force goes up and when like pole comes up it will get repulsed and goes down by this crank can be rotated.this is basically based on the principle of magnetic attraction and repulsion........ i am just a college student its just an idea that came into my mind......please say whether it is possible or not...

Converting a bike into a 50cc moped, any advice?

What do I do for break lights and turning signals? I've taken driver's training, so I know all the laws/signs ect... I'm looking for advice from people who've done this before. Have you run into any problems? Catches? I have very little idea what is needed to make a gas powered motor to work. How to you take care of a 2-stroke 50cc engine? How do I mount it to my bike frame? should I look out for something in particular when I purchase an engine? Oh, and I live in Michigan (if there is any notable laws here, I plan to go to the secretary of state soon)

Model airplane engines in the uk?

I, however, know absolutely nothing about choosing engines  Can anyone reccomend a suitable engine? it must be under £50, easily available in the UK, capable of pushing a micro scooter with me on it at a reasonable speed (faster than normal scooting speed), small enough to fit on the scooter and easy to control (preferable just with a wire which can be pulled for more juice). Could you also reccomend a suitable propeller? Incidentally, does anyone know if this thing will be road legal?

How does this engine work? Answered

I have a mini moto engine which i'm going to use to power a go kart type thing. I need help identifying the different intakes as it looks like there are three holes. I think the middle one is to attatch a throttle cable, but what of the other 2? One already has a pipe attatched to it (right hand side) and the other (left) looks like it has a fuel tap. I'd guess fuel and oil, but I always thought that had to be premixed, so shouldn't there only be one hole? Any help in identifying the different bits would be appreciated. Chip.

Soo, currently teh lawnz needs mowing, but there's no petrol.... for the lawn mower, that's four-stroke (straight unleaded & oil seperate) there's two-stroke stuff though(50:1 ratio or so), I did try a little in the tank, which seemed to work okay, but concerned parents are wondering it might make it choke the mower to death, can someone please confirm what can happen, and what will most likely happen. =) -Thanke!

Does a 2-stroke Honda CB 100 NE engine need a battery to run? Answered

I have a Honda 2-stroke CB100NE (1018034) engine which I am trying to get working. This is the first time Ive worked with an engine so my knowledge is quite fragmented. So far the engine will turn over using the kickstart but I've been unable to get a spark. Documentation for this specific engine seems to be quite limited but I found a service manual claiming that the generator goes into the battery which then drives the spark plug via the coil, points etc. However, a friend told me that the spark plug can be run directly off the generator/magneto, and since the engine isn't in a motorbike which would require lights and a horn the battery isn't necessary. I'm also not sure how the rectifier plays into this if I'm not having a battery - is the rectifier only there to facilitate charging of the battery? So my question is, does my engine need a battery to power the spark plugs and if so, do I need to use the rectifier? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why will my power washer only run on choke? Answered

I have a typical small engine power washer which was running fine the first day I used it this year even on the old fuel. When I got a can of new fuel this year, it would start and run while I had the choke on, but when I tried to take the choke off, it would simply die. This was the case even after it had run awhile. I was able to adjust the speed from rabbit to turtle and back to rabbit with no problems. However, while it is in choke, I just am not getting the same power. What could be causing this small engine to only run in the choke position? It has oil. This is New Jersey, and every gas station now has ten percent ethanol mixed into the gas. I can guess that this has something to do with it, but how can I fix the problem? What exactly is the problem?

Adding suspension to a go kart?

It it a good idea to add suspension to a go kart? It is a small go kart and already has a frame from metal tubing and small wheels. My friend and i thought it would be cool to be able to drive it off road. We are meeting up tomorrow to discuss in detail how we would design it. The basic idea is this: use a pair of universal joints attached to a rod which transfers the power from the axle to the wheels. There would also be a spring attached to a hinge where the universal joint attaches to the wheel, and the other side of the spring attaches to the frame. There would also be some sort of frame that this stuff was attached to to keep it in place. The frame would be made preferably without welding, as we have no access to welding equipment. I don't know if this is possible to do without welding, but if it was REALLY necessary, i guess we could get a welder or find someone to do it for us. We will add images of our prototype drawings tomorrow once we get them done, those should help you envision what we are trying to accomplish. Thanks for the help!

I rev the engine and something thumps!

So I got back from my drive today and came up the driveway in neutral just for funnzies, but while in neutral if I rev the engine up quickly, around 4k RPM's there is a serious thump.  The whole car gives a pretty good shake when it happens.  When I bring the RPM's up smoothly I don't notice it so I am not sure what it could be.  I thought it may be a clutch engaging, but what would engage at that speed that wasn't in already.  I also thought it might be a clutch disengaging, but that would result in a serious thump, just a smooth wined-down.  The car is a 2003 dodge durango with 160,000 miles on it.  It is an automatic which can somehow kill itself when trying to start going, and it is the coolest, most durable car ever.

How do I get compression into my engine?

I have a 2000 Grand Am Pontiac 6 cylinder. I have low to no compression in my engine, i haven't got a compression test done, at first I thought it was because I had a hole in my radiator hose, but i changed that along with my battery and both are perfectly fine, but car still won't start. It makes the sound like there is no compression, so I was wondering how do you get compression back into an engine. I spoke with a mechanic and he said that i could pour transmission oil into the spark plugs and that should do, I just wanted a second oppinon and see if there are any other ideas.
