Fluorescent bulb questions ? Answered

Hello, Short question but sorry,  I cannot seem to shorten it; the actual question is in the last two lines . My friend's outside light stopped working; Earlier today I was asked to replace the two bulbs; they had stopped working and seemed slightly brown on the ceramic part. They are four pin fluorescents; I have not used these type before. I went to Screwfix and their catalogue showed two bulbs that looked identical to the original but one model said for electronic ballast only and one type said for magnetic ballast only; the shop staff did not know what a ballast was and could not advise me, when looking at the original, which type to buy. I went to Toolstation , no such distinction was made in their catalogue; I asked the guy about the ballast suitability; he did not know what a ballast was; I bought the one that seemed the closest in name. I have never has to think about ballast types before buying a bulb before; but after buying the bulbs I found a sticker on the lamp saying -electronic ballast. I stuck the first bulb in, it did not light. I put the bulb, instead, into the next socket; it lit and stayed lit. I put the remaining bulb in the first socket and both bulbs stopped working; whatever combination that I tried. Bulb problems on iped?

I have an iped electric moped with pedals which I believe has a in hub motor ( haven't looked yet) the problem I have is this the replacement bulbs are almost impossible to find The headlight for example is a 55volt 36/36 which I am finding impossible to find  the rear brake light is 55 volt 15/15 watt unsure of the wedge bulb parking light which is 5mm width and there is definitely no 55 volt wedge bulbs this size The only conclusion I can think of is to insert a dc converter which will drop the voltage to each bulb from 55v to 12v giving me more availability on bulb selection I am just curious if any one on hear knows where I can get 55volt bulbs ? I also noticed a post on here regarding someone looking for extra speed and was answered with disconnecting the grey loop wires under the top cowling Well done that man you gave good advice I done mine myself and yes the increase is there I don't know if I have to keep looking for answers on this but my email is nickcorish@gmail.com if anyone can help Many Thanks all Nick

Wiring circular fluorescent bulb Answered

Hello,my first time posting here, hope I don't break any rules.I want to wire up a circular fluorescent bulb for a sculpture.I bought a SODIAL(R) 40W Ring Tube Fluorescent Lamp Electronic Ballast AC 220V 0.19A and a 40W T9 Circular Warm White Tube.Could someone advise me on what other bits I need (e.g what starter) and a guide on how to connect everything up to each other and power? I'm based in the UK if this affects potential suppliers. I have done this with a straight fluorescent before but by cannibalising a bought fitting. Pretty clueless when it comes to electronics and would like to avoid killing myself/ others if possible.Many thanks!

why do halogen lights keep blowing? Really scared of fire!

I live in a rented attic flat and just before Christmas four of the ceiling halogen spot lights in my hall and livingroom blew.  I called the landlord (he is an electrician) and he replaced them - then charged me £50!  Two days later the same lights blew again.  There seems to be condensation or something around a couple of the bulbs. (They are sunk in the ceiling.) The next day I went away for two weeks for Christmas, came back yesterday and this morning there was a 'pop' noise and all the five lights in my bedroom blew. (I hadn't just turned them on. They were already on.)  I can't locate the fuse box and I am worried about an electrical fault causing a fire.  It is a new flat (five years old, and the landlord did all the wiring - he is an electrical contractor.) I have to be out all day tomorrow, leaving my little dog there, and I am scared there will be a fire.  I am going to speak to him tomorrow and try to get him to come and sort this out tomorrow night when I get in, but it took ages to get my landlord to come and sort the last thing out, I am living in semi-darkness, and I can't afford to pay hundreds of £ every time the bulbs go.  I have only lived there three months.  What should I do?  Is it safe? I would feel better if I could turn everything off at the mains before going out tomorrow, but I don't know where the thing is to do this - and I don't want to meddle with stuff I know nothing about.

Help with MR16 bulb wiring on motorcycle!

Hi, I'm from India and I own a bajaj pulsar 220 S that has a 35w 12v headlight and I recently bought an aftermarket enduro headlight to fix on it, but the problem is that the headlight I bought has two MR16 bulbls and each bulb has two wires coming from it both white in color, So I'm totally confused with the wiring thing, Should I solder one white wire with a red one from the motorcycles wiring socket and the other white with the black one of the ground socket? I'd appreciate if you could clear that up for me. P.S - I'm a complete noob when it comes to electricals.

Way to control two fluorescent bulbs in the same fixture individually?

I would like to set up a few fluorescent light fixtures that each have one blacklight bulb and one white bulb. I would like to be able to control them individually so that I can have either the blacklight bulb or the white bulb on at any given time. It would be preferable to be able to dim the white bulbs, but this isn't necessary. I am okay with running a 14/3 power cable assuming two ballasts would fit in one fixture. I would also like to accomplish this as cheaply as possible.  Thank you.

What is the easiest way to make a automotive bulb blink, similar to a strobe!? Answered

The bulb in question is a automotive 12 volt GE 904 wedge bulb.  Other bulbs could be used of course as this would be a simple mod.  And, yes, i know you can just buy car strobe kits, but I am trying to utilize what I have access to.  Our local scrap yard, which has several dozen cars in it allows free picking, so.... Anyone recommend what out of a car circuit I would need

Power supply/adaptor for 12v 15w ac bulb?

Hi all. I have a light set with a 12v 15w AC bulb along with a 12v 1-2w small AC motor. I also received a adaptor along with it of 12v 1A AC. The adaptor worked only for an hr and went off. The primary winding were open when checked. I brought a new adaptor and the same thing happened. Can anyone please help me to find what kind of adaptor (output volt and Amp) is required for the light and motor to work.

Is it possible to use a CPU fan to generate electricity to power an incandescent electric bulb?

Okay, I have to make a  model of hydroelectric power generator. I know that a DC Motor can produce only AC current when its rotated. But as far as I know AC current can power an incandescent electric bulb. So,Is it possible to use a CPU fan to generate electricity to power an incandescent electric bulb?

when switching a car over to LEDs would it be possible to place a resistor acrross the led?

I bought led tail bulbs and led load resistors for my car but when i have the load resistors in place the brake light stays on constantly and there is very little current going throught the LED bulb. how can i fix this problem without needing to go buy new led bulbs or new load resistors. the resistors i have are plug and play so the wireing could be changed if needed. i thought about placeing a 1Mohm resistor across the negative and positive leads of the led bulb but i didnt know if that would be acceptable

Brighter headlights?

Hey all! I drive a 1984 BMW 318i (that's the E30) with the standard H1 bulbs for the low and high beams (4 x H1 in total). I want better visibility at night and have been looking at options. Can anyone help with the following: 1. do i have to use high wattage bulbs to see a significant difference or would "upto 90% more light" 55W osram bulbs help? I would hate to spend the money on the 55W osrams only to end up with 5 extra lumens. 2. am i correct in saying that ALL xenon bulbs require the whole ballast and starter setup like fluorescents? are there some that don't? 3. Is there anyone who has used a high wattage bulb? what are your experiences? is the shorter life worth it? where on the continuum of wattage VS lifespan would you recommend? Right now I'm leaning towards the high wattage option, something like 80-100W. MY local hardware doesn't stock these and I doubt my local auto-electrical supplier would either. I'm thinking I may have to do some digging, maybe 4x4 accessory stores would have them since they are technically only meant for offroad use. K thanks, your help is much appreciated, I'll try to post an 'ible of old VS new and the installation procedure once I decide on the bulbs.

This is my first contribution to Instructables, so please comment constructively. Nikola Tesla invented the Carbon Button lamp as a kind of incandescent light, because Thomas Edison banned him from using his incandescent filament bulbs. Nikola later discovered that versions of it could also be used in wireless, trans-Atlantic telegraphy, and to investigate what we now call x rays. In fact, he even used the lamp (or something similar to it) to take x-ray photographs, 8 years before Wilhelm Rotgen discovered them.For this reason, I must warn you: this device may possibly generate x rays. I am not responsible for any harm of any kind that may or may not result from re-creating this interesting device. There are phosphors that you can buy that will absorb x rays and re-emit them as visible light. I recommend that you coat the bulb with it until you know for sure that the x rays aren't strong enough to hurt you, or if makes x rays at all. Mixing it with a phosphor made for uv light wouldn't hurt either. Theory of Operation:The bulb is powered by a Tesla Coil, or other source of high voltage, high frequency current, such as a driver for a plasma globe (actually, the modern plasma globe is descended from this kind of technology!)When the power is turned on, electricity bombards the carbon button. Because carbon isn't the best conductor, this causes the button to heat and release electrons into the bulb's vacuum (the technical name for this is "thermionic emission," or the "Edison effect") . These electrons, in turn, excite the remaining air molecules and cause them to create visible light. This is strikingly similar to how fluorescent lamps work!Supposedly, the bulb should shine 10 times brighter than an incandescent bulb.(Note that the excitation of the air molecules, not the incandescence of the button, is actually the main source of light from the bulb.)If anyone decides to build it, please post an instructable showing the steps and finished product. I need help creating a light circuit for my car. can anyone help?

Lately, I have felt that when driving at night that Im having a hard time seeing things. Ive put 8000k HID bulbs in but yet im still having problems seeing. So I figured if I put in OEM fog lights then I could have 4 8000K HID bulbs rather than 2. twice the bulbs twice the light. my problem is that I already have LED fog lights on my car. They are offset style which I prefer over having fog lights under the head lights. I want to keep my LED fog lights and add new OEM fog lights. I only want the OEM fog lights to light when when the head lights are on and the LED fogs to light any other time only if the head lights are off ive already ordered the OEM fog lights so how can i design a circuit that can do this?

How to make Finches - Love Bird Incubator

Hi, I have read many blogs on how to build our own small incubator for my finches or hen eggs. The problem is every blog, instructable, guide shows to put 25 watt bulb, but my question is.. Is there any possiblity to put some automatic thermostat which gets on when the temperature is lower then desired  temperature (eg. 102-103 degree fahrenheit) and the thermostat should shut down when the temperature is reached to desired temperature. Using bulb can not be effective in different climat condition and after a long run it becomes very hot inside the incubatore, plus it needs extra attention during the incubation period. I checked on net for this type of automatic thermostate but it is too costly and basically made to control for room temperature. Any guidance on low cost automatic temperature control where a user can set temperature for low temperature of appx 100-103 degree fahrenheit would be much appreciable. Thanks in Advance. Rohit

1990 Camry front signal cover release?

How do I get the front turn signal cover off to replace the signal bulb?  I unscrewed the screws I could see outside and pulled.... which got one end loose, but that's all. Screwed it back together... and have been driving around right front blinker-less since. Not good.

My Infrared Sauna keeps turning off by itself mid program.

It turns on, heats up for about 1 to 10 minutes, then click, turns off.  What can cause this?  I usually unscrew the light bulb so it does NOT come on during the cycle, I like to sit in the dark and sweat!  When I screw lightbulb to turn on, unit immediately clicks off. I have been having some panel problems where the time keypad or the temperature keypad will not respond as well.

Help with wiring TIP31 transistor to run LED's on subwoofer?

I am wiring LEDs to my subwoofer to sync in beat of the music, to stop the bulbs from blowing, i am thinking of wiring a TIP31 transistor to it and plug in RCA and 12v in to run it using a rca out to the actual amp, in the attached picture please make sure i got all the wiring right and tell me if it would work http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg589/daleumad/asdfghnh.png id get a bigger picture but it wouldnt let me, just use like browser zoom or open in paint

Call for pre-made parts!

We're rolling out some new parts for the Kits in 123D Design.  That means you'll soon have some real-world models at your disposal in the Design app, and I wanted to see if there were some specific requests out there for parts that you might use on the regular. I've put in for some tools and hardware - like metric and SAE wrenches and hex bolts - but is there anything that you'd like to see as a part or a template?   M4 screws for an Arduino enclosure? 4" 2-way gate hinges? Eye-Hooks? Light bulbs? Threaded rod? Phone cases?

Is it safe to put a really powerful lamp in a 2000 lumen DLP projector?

I bought my Mitsubishi SD205U projector used. Eventually, the bulb is going to fail, and I want to know some stuff before it dies. I plan on buying an LED, driver, and heatsink off of Ebay, and modding the projector to use it. The best lens I can find it 60-80 degrees. A bunch of the light will go into the projector, will this damage anything? And other than the wasted light, will it hurt the image quality? Next question, can I put a much more powerful LED in it without damaging anything? Finally, is there anything I should know of before attempting this project?

What's the cheapest way to run all these F15T8 fluorescent tubes?

I have a bunch of F15T8 fluorescent tubes, and I want to make my own light fixture with something like 4-8 of them running at the same time. Doing some research has shown me that I need a ballast. Nearly all of the ballasts I found online for f15t8 were only for 1 or 2 lamps, and I don't really want to buy more than one. Is there any way I can use a ballast rated for a higher watt bulb or something? What happens if you put a F15T8 in a F32T8 ballast?

How can I build an extra large drum light shade?

I would like to make a big drum light shade (approx measurements are 40" wide by 12" tall). I've got a basic hanging light fixture (just a triple bulb fixture with no shade), and I would like to fashion a frame (this is the hard part) around which to wrap a thin fabric.  Here is the style I'm going for, but not nearly big  enough: http://remodelista.com/img/sub/uimg/Julies%20Images/west%20elm%20parchment%20drum%20light.jpg Any guidance you might have on where to get loops (or make loops) with approximately a 40" diameter, or how to get that frame done would be much appreciated!

Chevrolet Astro / Safari owners opinions sought plz.

Hi guys, Im thinking of getting an Astro or Safari and just wanted to know what other owners out there in Instructables Land thought of them. We get a few imports over here in the UK either directly from the Sates or via Japan, they typically have low mileage, if it is to be believed! Just wanted to know if there was a particular year to avoid? Im tempted to go for an AWD for towing and getting out of winter difficulties. Is  the AWD reliable? Ok so they are thirsty, but I can cut costs (and mpg) by converting to LPG. Are they easy to work on? There'a lot of light bulbs to change in the interior! Not much room under the 'dog house' by the look of it.... Any help extremely appreciated :) Cheers! Bosh

What size resistor should I use to shorten a string of Christmas lights?

I need to shorten a string of christmas lights from 20 lights to 3 lights. The unaltered string ratings are  120volt,  .08 amps. The bulbs/lamps are 6volt and .48 watts each.   It is interesting to me that 20 lights x 6volts = 120volts. I'm sure that is not by coincidence but I'm not an engineer so I don't know how to use that information. I need to know what size resistor I need to use.  This is way to confusing for me to follow. If someone can help me out with a simple formula I would appreciate it as I need to work with lights strings of many different lengths.  Please try and put your answer into laymens terms. Thanks

Microwave Transformer

I have salvaged a old microwave transformer that i am going to use for a SLA battery charger i am building. I have rewound the secondary with 50amp wire and i get an AC output of 12v what is what i want but im confused with working out how many amps it puts out. I have run it through a bridge rectifier and a capacitor and i get about 18V DC. I was testing the amps by adding 12v 50watt light bulbs to it 1 at a time and when i get to 200watts the voltage starts to drop to about 10v DC. My question is does that mean the transformer is being overloaded? and if so is there a way to increase the amp output by winding secondary with different wire? I have seen online videos of Microwave transformers being rewound and they give out 50amps at 12v.

Question regarding colour

Hi everyone! So here is another confusion in my mind.  I know that colours are a result of electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum interacting with our eyes.  The visible spectrum consists of 7 colours, abbreviated VIBGYOR. Now my question is, what are primary colours and secondary colours? And how come mixing of two colours produce an entirely different  colour? I expected that all 7 of them would be primary. But that is not the case.  Also, for illustrating the real world scenario from which this doubt crawled into my mind, consider that i have two pieces of translucent films, one blue, and other yellow. Now initially i place the blue film in-front of a white bulb, then it filters all other colours other than blue. Now place a yellow in-front of the blue, and there, you have green. What is the working principle behind this? How come the "blue" light turned "green" after passing through the yellow film?

How can I make a hollow, see-through sphere? Answered

This is for an adaptation of a lamp. What I want is to cover the bulb with a large (little smaller than a basketball) sphere, so there will be a hole in one end. Light obviously needs to be able to shine through. My first thought was a resin of some sort, and a quick search led me to epoxy resin. Is this see-through? Can colour be added? Any other ideas? Some early thoughts: - In an inflated balloon, inject liquid. Rotate, thereby distributing fairly evenly, until liquid hardens. Cons: How long do I have to rotate this balloon? What if it pops!? (Could use a hard container...) - Double boiler: Use two similar bowls, small inside larger, fill in between. Cons: How to get it even? Smaller bowl would float (weigh it down...) Not even close to a sphere With your suggestions I'll do a few trials, possibly put out an instructable if something works. All suggestions are welcome (even if they deviate a little). Thanks!

3Watt LED Recessed Ceiling Downlight - 12 Volt Question

I'm new to the world of LEDs, but have recently completed a DYI using Cree XR-E as eaves lighting outside my steel building.  Comtemplating doing the same on my personal residence and was considering the 3W 3 LED ceiling downlight ac85-265 under the soffits of my home.  These can be found in great abundance on EBAY for as low at $3.99 per unit (China made  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warm-White-3W-3LED-Recessed-Ceiling-Downlight-ac85-265V-Bulb-Lamp-wall-lamp-/110941027707?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D4640763913095912456%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D110941027707%26  ).  My question is this: All the units I've looked at have attached LED resistors.  However, I only want to use a 12 Volt power supply (meanwell) placing all units in series.  What do I do with the resistors attached to the fixtures (LEDs)?  Can I remove the LED resistors and attach 12 volt power supply directly to the 3 W fixture?  Elementary question from an elementary low voltage guy. thanks for your responses in advance.

How to construct a timing circuit for a LED lighting circuit.?

I am new to electronics but a quick learner. I have a dark path that I want to illuminate for about 2 to 3 minutes using a commercial LED light. It is too far to run a 120V line, so I am hoping to use a 3 - Volt Lithium battery connected to a timer that will shut-off the light automatically. I cannot use a motion sensor as the path is lined with trees that would set it off during windy sessions. I am hoping to be able to push a normally off button, have the LED bulb illuminate and, after I have walked past the darkened area (2 to 3 minutes) automatically turn off, I need two units, one at each end. Also, can I adapt the lighting system to solar power? I really don't want to replace batteries often. Can anyone help me. I can solder, follow a diagram and instructions. I will enclose the unit and make it as maintenance free as possible. If my choice of battery power is wrong, please advise me on any improvements. If  there is a commercial timer available please let me where I can buy it incase it's too much for me to build. How do I keep my chicken's watering system from freezing? Answered

Hi!  I just found this site and can imagine I will be spending a lot of time here!  What brought me here today is a concern from last winter.  I raise chickens and developed a winter watering system that ALMOST works... It involves 80' of PVC piping that is circulated with an aquarium pump and was heated with a bucket heater.  The water is stored in a Coleman Cooler.  The birds access the water using 10 "Chicken Nipples" (http://www.avianaquamiser.com/chickennipple/) and here in lies the problem.  Even though the system flows in cold weather, the small amount of water in the nipple tends to freeze.  I imagine I could heat the system more, but I would rather have the heat directly on the nipples to keep them warm. I could use a light bulb on each but I would rather be more efficient.  I am hoping for a way to heat a bracket or coil around each one and have it turn on periodically as needed (maybe using a timer and a ThermoCube).  All the heat coils I find tend to produce too much heat and I am afraid of melting the plastic around each of the nipples.  I have spent countless hours at Home Depot, Radio Shack and electric supply stores trying to solve this.  Any help is greatly appreciated!   ---Regards Alexander

Switching

I have five existing wall lights that are hard wired to a single switch, running on 230v a/c It's impossible to run alternate wiring as it's all embedded in the walls (which are three feet thick.)   I am going to convert each light to be dual-function, with (a) background candle-LEDs and (b) a couple of 5w LED spotlights Already I have acquired 12v LED drivers and step-down transformers (12v to 5V) for the candle LEDs.   What I wanted to figure out was some electronincs to allow me to control them all by using the existing in-wall wires and perhaps replacing the wall switch with a push-button switch. What I had in mind was to be able to achieve different functions sequentially, possibly using an IC like a 4017. However, I'm only a beginner at electronics, and I haven't been able to figure out a way to do it.   One sequencing that would be effective, commencing with an all-off situation, would be:   1st press = candle lights only on   2nd press = LED spotlights on (Candle bulbs remain on)   3rd press =  All off   Cycle then repeats.   If this proves to be impossible, I also considered the idea of short and long presses, which could trigger a timer for the long press to acomplish some switching   The power of 230v a/c will also be travelling down the same wires to give power to the 12v LED drivers in each lamp, so I'm actually talking about sequential presses on a 230v a/c circuit.

Question regarding speed electricity

Hi people! I have another thing which i do not totally understand, so as usual i have asked in one of my favourite sites! :) I always had a doubt on how "fast" is electricity. In our real world, i can observe that it is pretty fast. If i turned on a switch connected to a light bulb, i can see it turned on pretty much "instantaneously". So a question came to mind, how fast it really is? Is it near to the speed of light? So, i did some googling. According to what i have found and understood so far, it is the electric field that carries information and not the electrons themselves. And electric field travels near to the speed of light( of course, depending on the medium).  If that is the case, then from the "textbook" definition of electricity, it is the movement of electrons right? But according to what i have understood so far, electrons move pretty slowly. In DC a few millimeters per hour or so(not having the exact figure in mind, pardon me) and the average displacement in AC is zero. Then how exactly is electricity so fast? I would appreciate it if someone explains it in a simple way, both on speed and what exactly is movement of electrons. :) Update: Okay, so far my questions are answered, and it seems to take off in different directions(like science always does :D). So to stay true to the question posted here, i would like to say my doubts cleared! Many thanks to people who have answered my question, Specially Dr.Kelsey and Josehf , for the information provided! I accidentally invented a device to collimate any light source into a concentrated beam... what should I do with it?

I've been umming and ahhing about what to do with this for the couple of weeks since I accidentally invented the thing (I was working on a solar energy device), and I thought you guys may be your usual well-spring of help and advice. Basically I seem to have designed a device which will collimate an extended light source. Any light source. So you could, for example, turn a 100 Watt light bulb into a 100 Watt laser. Or a square meter of sunlight into a kiloWatt. I haven't made it, but simming on the computer gives an optimal blow out rate of about 1/2 meters per kilometer, so over a range of meters or tens of meters it's pretty much as accurate as a normal laser. The only upper limit I can see on how much power you could put through this thing is when the materials start melting, which would probably be pretty high. There's really nothing fancy about it, it's just a shape. You could print it out easily on a 3d printer and fill it with some kind of settable glass for the total-internal-reflection. It would weigh about as much as a 2 litre bottle of water and be about the same size. I was concerned about it being weaponisable, but even at a kiloWatt the lethal range would probably be less than 100 meters, in which case you might as well just get a gun. I don't know if anyone's already done something like this, I can't find anything online, and people kept telling me it was supposed to be impossible. So, um, yeah...

Flyback driver from monitor circuitry?

So i've been into hv stuff for years,currently engineering undergraduate, just never did anything practical. So recently we got a new microwave, therefore old microwave= junkyard ^_^. Anyway, i acquired a MOT i also took the capacitor and diode, and the magnetron (never know when you could crave instant cooked meat ^_^ kidding). Then a few days later (last week) someone left a computer monitor outside on the sidewalk, which equals source of flyback ^_^. clearly someone up there wants me to play around with hv (or is it someone down there..?) and so thats how i  came into possession of a flyback. i could have had one a while back, we had a big tv, which had one of the big old flybacks which are way better than modern ones, but this is before i knew about flybacks and so i dismissed it as some large junk...to this day im still slapping my forehead over the fact that i let that go... Naturally, i have a few questions: 1. I hooked up the mot to mains (deadly i know) but the arcs were insane. i tried ballasting it with a cfl bulb, 15 watts, however, when connected the mot did nothing. touching the hv to ground only made the cfl brighter. why? 2. i pulled the flyback with the circuit, i actually took out the whole board from the computer monitor. how can i use this as a driver? i know i could pull components out and make one but seems to me whats already there would be good enough. 3. Found out i can use a cfl to drive the flyback, can i also use this for the mot? one other thing, i was thinking of using the mains transformer (torriodal transformer) from the monitor to power the mot and/or flyback, using it as a step-up or step-down transformer. Is this possible with the flyback? Thanks, and sorry for the loong question im just excited ^_^
