Are catalytic converters poisonous?

I've been looking around and it seems like most catalytic converters have palladium in them. I think palladium is mostly inert but palladium salts are highly toxic. I would like to open up a catalytic converter and use the substrate to make a thermoacoustic engine stack. So do you know if it would be poisonous to me to open a catalytic converter? Thanks!

A speciel stepdown converter?

Hello guys of instructables! I'm writing on this forum, because I think you the only guys that can help me! My situation: I'm from Europe (Nordic part), and our voltage/hertz is 230v 50hz - I think. What I'm trying to do is using american clippers here in my country, but what I've experienced is that it really going to work because the magnetic motor in the hair clipper is going to make alot of noise and overheat, even tho if you used a stepdown converter (230v to 110v) My request: But yesterday i saw a guy on youtube which said that he had made a revolutionary stepdown converter, that would solve the problem and make american clippers anywhere in Europe - without overheating and noise. Here is the video: And here is a ebay link of the converter: I think its a bit of a overprice (119.3575$) and I was wondering if there is an alternative, where can either make it myself or buy one as good as that one with same specs and quality.. I hope you guys can help me, I'm a bit of unexperienced guy when it comes to electronics so bare with me.. - josh

How to convert an air pump/vacuum into a two mode machine which can blow and suck? Answered

Hi, I'm trying to build a simple robot gripper under a budget using this idea So from what I understand I need a vacuum cleaner that can change into an air blower with a flip of switch using the same nozzle. Is there any cheap option where i can make something similar? I was thinking of buying a cheap car vacuum cleaner or a cheap air pump and reverse the mode by reversing the motor polarity. Will that work? Really need a quick answer for my project, please help. Thank you!

Convert battery power to low voltage?

Is there an easy way to convert a security system sensor from battery (2 3V lithium batteries) to a wired low voltage line? I have pulled the cover off the sensor (image attached) and it doesn't look too complicated. Other options would be to convert it to POE or USB. Don't know if that's doable or practical. I'm building a house and have an opportunity to never have to replace those batteries, which are not on my "be nice to the environment" list. I have plenty of low-voltage in the house already. There is also built-in solar backup for 12-15 hours for power outages. Thanks for the help.

Convert motion activated prop to timed/random

I've searched for weeks for an answer that doesn't require a PhD in electrical engineering and hope someone here can help. I have a motion activated Halloween prop (walk by and it talks, etc) however, it requires quite a bit of light in order to detect the motion. I'd like to either put it on a timer and/or just let it chatter randomly so that it will actually be useful. I love the phrases he uses more than  the prop itself and plan to remove it's electronics to place in a different prop. However, it's pointless if it remains quiet as we won't have him close enough to a bright light source to make him talk. Help? Thanks Elaine

Converting a bike into a 50cc moped, any advice?

What do I do for break lights and turning signals? I'm very technical minded and good with electrical logic, but I don't know the laws/regulation surrounding that area (but I DO know they are required). I've taken driver's training, so I know all the laws/signs ect... I'm looking for advice from people who've done this before. Have you run into any problems? Catches? I have very little idea what is needed to make a gas powered motor to work. How to you take care of a 2-stroke 50cc engine? How do I mount it to my bike frame? should I look out for something in particular when I purchase an engine? Oh, and I live in Michigan (if there is any notable laws here, I plan to go to the secretary of state soon)

Wood Converted SWB Recumbent Bike of Awesome!

This is a project coming soon... But I'm so excited I have to share... I'm beside myself in excitement, in fact. All that's left to finish the project is:1. Recondition a bit more chain and add it on2. Add idlers and get my chain line in order3. Cut excess wood and make a SeatBut after I assembled a crank into some 2x4's - and had to step back and laugh. I've seen it before, in person at the maker faire. But to do it myself and see how easy/simple it is... Ha!So I cobbled that together - made a pseudo tie fighter handle bar from some scrap PVC and two Tees... And rode off into the sunset... Until the chain derailed - and then I realized I couldn't make appreciable low speed turns due to chain routing... Both problems can be fixed with an idler - a solution I've yet to install due to Kinematics homework having a due date of tomorrow. So yeah, this is something I've always wanted to do. And I'm totally happy I did it (and happy I bought those cheap bikes at auction last year :p). AND, the front boom is modular. I intend on making it, and have accommodated for, adjustable. So I can go for more incline and a more aggressive seat position. (mind you, this is a single speed :p).Okay, I'm done venting -- feedback?

How can I convert an AC motor to a generator?

So for a school project, I am required to convert an AC motor to a generator. Actually, it is a table fan of diameter approximately 10-12 inches, and runs on AC power at 220V 50Hz. I want to convert it into a windmill, but I'm stuck on the power generation part. So using materials easily available in a high school physics laboratory, how can I convert an AC motor table fan into a generator? Also, what would the output of the generator made in volts and amperes?

Convert a washing machine transmission to a gear reduction drive? Answered

I just completely disassembled an old washing machine. I noticed that if I could pop the transmission open and stop it from agitating it should work as a gear reduction drive that I could use for another project I'm working on. Before I get too far into this I figured I'd ask and see if what I want to do is even possible? As I understand it inside the transmission there is a gear with a rod attached kind of like the drive wheel on an old steam locomotive. It seems by either removing that entirely or maybe modifying it I should be able to get it to rotate in a single direction. Anyone with any experience know if this is even plausible?

Help me diagnose a check engine light for a patch and my eternal esteem! Answered

Check Engine Light/ Catalytic Converter: A while ago my 97 V6 XLE Camry's check engine light went on and the guys at the dealership who ripped me off to diagnose it ($100) explained that it was a bad catcon. I replaced the part (with much sweat blood and tears) and it solved the problem (light went off) and the vehicle passed emissions testing. Whohoo! Only now the light is back on and I am not savvy enough to just figure it out and not rich enough to buy the diagnostic testing device or to take it back to the dealer. Anyone know of a good way to diagnose for cheap?!

I have 3 devices under my car connected to my exhaust, but I dont know what they are or what to do about them?

I have 3 devices under my car connected to the exhaust system. Im unsure about what they are, what I can do about them, or how I can modify these to make the car louder, lighter, and less restricted. The car is not broken and doesnt need repair, this is about modding it. My biggest concern is the last device (3rd picture), because it is big, and most likely heavy. I know the exhaust system will restrict the engine, I also know that the exhaust system has a muffler and a catalytic converter. So my question is   What is this device in the back? How can it be removed/bypassed/replaced/modified to be louder lighter and less restricting? And if I cant do anything with it, what can I do? (the devices are in order from closest to engine to farthest)

Converting gravitational potential energy into air pressure to launch a projectile?

Hello my name is Aaron! I am a high school senior from northeastern Kentucky designing a pneumatic system of sorts for a science competition and need some help. I will be building a device that converts gravitational potential energy, from a falling mass, into air pressure (or possibly the movement of air depending on the design) to launch a projectile a specific distance (max distance needed is 8.25 m). What I am thinking about doing is using one double action pneumatic cylinder (DAPC) as a bellow in which a falling mass (max 3.500 kg at a max 90 cm) would strike its piston shaft, creating positive pressure within the system. With that positive pressure another DAPC’s piston would simultaneously strike our projectile sending it airborne in theory. Below there is an illustration of my idea, sorry about the poor quality. So what I need help determining is would this design work before I start buying parts? If so what approximate sizes should the two cylinders be and should they be different sizes to maximize the force exerted on the projectile? If you have any other ideas concerning the design or any questions about the project PLEASE feel free to share!!! Below are some of the design rules that pertain to this project along with some notes in italics about them. Thank you very much for your time in advance! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Description:    -Prior to competition, teams will design, construct, and calibrate a single device capable of launching projectiles into a target and collect data regarding device parameters and performance. Design Constraints:    -The launching force must be entirely supplied by the gravitational potential energy from a falling mass less than or equal to 3.500 kg. Any device part whose potential energy decreases and provides launch energy is considered part of the mass. The mass may consist of multiple discrete parts, which together count as the total mass.    -During each launch, the gravitational potential energy must be converted to air pressure or air movement, which is then used to launch the projectile, either directly (e.g., pop gun style, etc.) or indirectly (e.g., using a pneumatic cylinder to swing an arm, etc.) All device air chambers must start at ambient air pressure and must automatically return to ambient air pressure.    -The launching device (would look similar to this with the adjustable angle to accommodate different ranges), including the projectile and all components, must fit within a 75.0 cm x 75.0 cm x 1.00 m box in ready-to-launch configuration, in any orientation chosen by the team. Weights used to stabilize the device must be within the box.    -The triggering device (would look something like this except elevated with a mass suspended ready to be released) in not considered part of the device and must not contribute energy to the launch. It must extend out of the launch area, allow for the competitors to remain at least 1.00 m away from the launch area, and does not need to return to the launch area after launch. The triggering device must not pose a danger to anyone due to flying parts or excessive movement outside the launch area.    -Teams must provide unmodified tennis, racquet, ping pong, and/or plastic practice golf balls to be used as projectiles. Teams may change projectiles for each launch.    -The launching device must be designed and operated in such a way to not damage or alter the floor.    -Electrical components are not allowed as part of the device or triggering device. The Competition:    -Two targets, designated by small marks on tape on the floor or panels lying on the floor, must be placed in front of and centered on an imaginary line parallel to the launch direction that bisects the launch are. Supervisors are encouraged to place sand, cat litter, or similar substance in the area around the targets to help indicate landing spots.    -The targets must be placed in front of the launch area at distances between 2.00 m and 8.00 m (in intervals of 10 cm). A distance of at least 2.00 m must separate the targets. Target distances must not be announced until after impound is over and must be the same for all teams. Room ceiling height should be considered when setting the distances.

DIY 4-component Buck converter, no ICs, need help with maths

I'm building a bike light around a Seoul P4 LED and some re-purposed 18650 li-ion cells from a laptop battery. I'll need 700mA constant current and can comfortably fit 8 cells in my enclosure. I've done some reading and I should be able to build a Buck converter relatively easily, but I'm struggling to find any good guides to help me spec the components. I asked on Dave Jones's EEVBlog forums and all the replies recommended either Linear Regulators (wasteful) or something designed using Webbench, which only helps with circuits featuring ICs. As a buck should in theory only need a transistor, a diode, an incuctor and a capacitor I want to build it myself out of through-hole components. Can anyone help with some guides or tutorials on specifying these components please? My degree was Computer Science and I was definitely better at set theory and boolean algebra than anything involving formulae!
