Help

Hello,I'm Marcin from Greece. I saw yesterday a video about a interactive speaker cloud, but is too expensive for me.I started search about how to build one and I saw Arduino think. (I don't have any experience about it but with instructions I believe I can make it for my nephews) That is my project: I think to use led lights and speakers 2.1. I want to sync the woofer with a specific led strips that gonna make a bright white/light blue light when a loud lighting strike hits and then the following sounds that happens at lower volume to light up the others leds, and some times some random lightening lights. All of those thinks to sync with a sound effect of raining and storm that I will download from YouTube and can play for 1 hour and more. Maybe inwill use ceiling power supply so please someone tell me if that is possible to me to make it and how much gonna cost and if anyone can guide me about what I will need and the commands. Please if anyone can, really I want to make it for the kids because they love it when is raining and hear strikes.Love from Greece.SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH.

Soldering Help? Answered

So i recently got a 40 watt weller soldering iron. This is my first soldering iron ever, and i have watched many instructional videos and tips on how to use it. I had a bit of trouble tinning the tip but i got the hang of it. I am using Rosin Core Solder btw. Today i went to go practice my soldering a bit, so i plugged in my soldering iron and waited for it to heat up. Once i heated it up i got a damp sponge and i wiped off the old solder. IIRC i wiped it off and then tryed to tin the tip again, but i saw my tip has turned black. I tried to tin it, but the solder just turned into a ball and rolled off the tip, as if the tip was oil and the solder was water. I tried taking off what i presumed was oxidation by cleaning it with the sponge, mr. cleans magic eraser, and my last resort was a nail filer. MR cleans magic eraser turned the oxidation a grayish blue, but the nail filer was the only thing that took off all the oxidation. (i know that any sort of abrasive thing shouldn't be used, but i was angry and confused). I felt pretty happy, but as soon as i put solder on the tip, the tip immediately turned black and the solder rolled off again, making tinning impossible. I tried re tinning my spare chisel tip too and it wasnt so bad, but the solder just rolled off too. Now all i have left is a tinned "mini chisel" tip that im scared to use because i dont want to mess up what i have left. Is there something im doing wrong? I could really use some help.

Please help!!!!

I am new to the site. First of all I would like to say that this site is great and it has a ton of helpfull information. My question is that on the tail lights of my car I have led lights. It already has the circuitry for to do its job of getting brighter when you hit the brake and it comes back to less bright when you have your parking lights on. The tail light has 2 sections 1) the park/brake light and 2) the turn signal. I would like to make my turn signal section to light up some what dim when I turn on my parking lights and then when I activate my turn signal to flash brighter. Is there anyone who can help me with this? I tried connecting to my parking light wire to see if it would work with a resistor but it did not. HELP!!!!

I have found another style I like but I am not sure how I would make it. Our shop has a lot of tools so I don't think  finding the right tool should be a problem. 68 Camaro Help

So my Dad's Birthday is coming up and I want to get him his high school 68 Camaro Z-28. He was selling it (or so he thought) to a Mark T Reese, wife Janet living in Mobile, Alabama. My dad lived in California. Mark said he didn't want to buy it. He offered to sell it for my dad and since he already bought plane tickets, rented a trailer for the Camaro and was in Arizona on his way, so he accepted. So he went and dropped it off and came back to California and never heard from him again. I asked my dad the VIN but because it was a race car so it didn't need to be street legal so carfax is useless. He bought it in 1979. If anyone happens to know how to find it please let me know. Thanks.

Wood working help?

To make this question as short as possible, I'll get straight to the point. I am making a replica of a weapon from a game from wood, however the blade is quite large. Its a kind of battleaxe (see picture below) however I'm having a hard time finding a way to get quite a big piece of wood to slope to a point like a blade would. So basically I want to make a large piece of wood into a long wedge shape but I cant figure out how to do it. As you can see in the picture, using the hand on the handle for size reference, it is quite a large blade. The tools I have in my workshop are: A table saw, a band saw, a scroll saw, mitre saw, drills, handsaws, and chisels. (these are the only tools I think would come in handy, I do not have any tools such as a belt sander, though I do have an orbital sander if that helps) Any help it appreciated! Thanks.

Help: Mechanical Odometer

I have a bicycle trailer that I use for groceries and such, and hope to use for extended bicycle trips. I would like to get or construct an odometer for the back of the trailer, to advertise how far I've traveled. I've looked around a lot, but have had difficulty finding an non-electric or large-display DIY odometers (ideally, I would like the numbers to be 2 to 3 inches tall, and would like to keep it below ten pounds). I would prefer it to be mechanical only, requiring no batteries or electrical power, but am willing to give on that point for the sake of simplicity of design, weight and cost. If you have any advice where I could find advice or instructions on how I might set something up, I'd greatly appreciate it.

transformer help needed

Hi guys, i'm a newbie on here so i would like to take this opportunity to say hello :) i have a salvaged transformer that i'm working on at the mo. It is the primary that is blown, but the secondary is fine. I am in the uk, so it is designed to run on 240. Because i am looking to produce high amps, one solution would be to use the secondary as a primary, otherwise i am looking at doing a full rewind. i'm kinda new to transformers, but have enough knowledge for the job in hand. my question is how many turns does the primary need to have? i know that you cant give me an exact figure without the dimensions of the transformer in question (700w microwave transformer if that helps) but i seem to remember from school physics that there is an equation to work out the number of turns a primary must have at a given voltage, i have googled for days to no avail, i'm guessing it is out there somewhere, but i cant find it :( and the last question is that if the transformer was to have too few turns on the primary, what would happen when it was plugged in? my guess would be that it would short out the mains and the coil would rupture, possibly tripping the circuit breaker? many thanks to anyone who replies :) and merry xmas to all :)

Need Help With AirGun?

Okay, I've made air rifles before but this is a little more complicated... This one is a replica of a M14 (kinda). It's going to be powered on C02 cartridges and all the insides are going to be hid. So how it's going to work, you insert a C02 cartridge and pull a lever and that will push the C02 into a pipe that has an airtight seal and will pop the foil on the cartridge. From there the air will flow to a "holding" chamber, on the end of the "holding" chamber there will be a button valve (http://tinyurl.com/4h3us6c), from the button valve the air will flow to a second "holding" chamber were there will be a home made piston type valve (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No3nI07mlQo). Then you cock the bolt and a magazine or a single chamber (haven't decided yet) and a bullet type ammunition will be loaded in. The ammo has two parts (like a real one) the actual projectile and the casing, in the back of the casing there will be an air tight seal. A "tube" will be inserted when the bolt is pushed forward, and the seal will be made. So when you pull the trigger is pulled the piston will release the air from the second chamber and shoot the bullet out the barrel. So the shooting proses would cock the bolt, insert the bullet, close the bolt, press the button valve to release the "airlock" type chamber, and the pull the chamber. So what I need to know is how big do the two chambers have to be, what kind of velocity would I be able to achieve, and is this a good idea? Thanks for the help, Nick

Forge Ventilation help?

Hi all, Due to location & noise, in order to continue using my coke forge and anvil I must move indoors, into the shed to be precise. I know it sounds a bit crazy attempting to run a coke forge in quite a confined (10-14 m3), fairly air tight space, but I have researched thoroughly the dangers and safe working levels etc and have the use of a fully calibrated gas analyser designed to measure CO in real time, so safe operation will be measured to the nearest ppm :)  The fans gumf claims 1060 m3/hr which I guess is best case, flat out @ 50hz and obviously does not allow for any other mechanical losses, but even a conservative estimate must give around 45 air changes an hour, which to me sounds like more than adequate clean air coming in to displace combustion gasses. But I guess the first question is will the chimney work as a passive exhaust,  to maintain positive pressure behind the chimney (which will be 12") I will have only a forced air inlet and no other vents other than the chimney itself, trouble is I can see it both working and not working: 1. Inside air will be forced up the chimney as that is the only way out = more ventilation 2.Inside air will cool the air in the chimney reducing the natural draw =  less ventilation And even if the CO issue is overcome will heat just ruin my plans anyway?

Help with Dynamo types

I have a question for everybody out there. It has been a very long time since I did this type of electrical design work, and for the life of me I can’t remember the principals. I know there are many different ways to generate electricity by using mechanical motion, and converting a motor into a dynamo is very easy. What I am trying to do is to make a brushless dynamo. I have taken my inspiration from a cheap hand cranked torch, and intend to improve on it a lot. In this torch it has a coil which has a flat disk magnet sitting above it. The magnet is spun creating the charge in the coil and is used by the LED's in the torch. What I want to know is how specifically the voltage (potential difference) is created in the coil. My experience of stationary coils is where the magnet is rotated inside the coil. Could someone please explain it to me? Many thanks.

Circuitry (Electronics) Help/Books

I am looking to expand my electronics knowledge. I already know the basics (and a bit more), so please no suggestions for the basics. I know enough to build my own basic custom circuits. I am very knowledgeable about the Arduino (I use it practically every-day). I know how to use resistors, capacitors, transistors, most diodes (LED, Photo-resistor, current-blocking, one way, zener, etc.), and much more. I am self-taught, but want to further my education. I am VERY interested in robotics (I plan to work in aerospace engineering when I'm older), if that helps any. I am in need of good books to read on. I've gone through most of the projects in Forrest M Mim's books that I got in a kit from radioshack. I really would prefer some eBooks, though. Free is good, but I'll pay if it is necessary. Thanks! Electric bike motor help!

Helli guys.. after a long time racing motocross, I would like to experiment into doing an electric dirt bike for myself.. My plan is to find an 85 or 125cc frame with no engine, and build from that.. the biggest question is, what motor could I use that is no less than 15kw, and on the affordable side? I was looking at the Turnigy Rotomax 150cc eqiv. And it has a max power output at 9000 something watts, would that be any good for a motocross bike? Would it burn out quickly since its pretty small? Notes: i am strictly looking for powerful bikes, a 2kw bike is not for me since I am used to overpowered 250cc two stroke hell-born suicide machines, thanks..

Mousetrap car Pulley help.

Hi! ive been working on a mousetrap car for my physics class and i was looking into the idea of pulleys to get more power to pull on the axle to rotate it. Ive noticed that alot of the Pulleys I see all rotate on an axle which I can not acheive due to the small space on the car. So my thought would be to anchor these small wooden pucks (small like 1 cm diameter) and have notches in them so that the fishing line wouldnt slip. (picture) Can I get some help on wether or not this would work? If it works can I get some input on how i could make it better? ex. different pulley designs that dont require moving parts. Thanks in advance!
