'Ibles ideas

There's been a lot of interest in Tesla floating about the community, with some of his more popular accomplishments (or claims depending on who you ask). What I'd like to see happen now is for some new ideas to crop up. In the interest of being thorough, I'll say that the Tesla turbine (and quite a few uses for it) has been done a few times over, and the wireless power is one of the more popular goals as of late. Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not trying to dissuade anyone from exploring any ideas that have "been done." Rather, I would just like to see what can be done about some of the other ideas, like ball lightning, the earthquake machine, or even an exploration of his work in radio, or any other topics. So, to summarize, if you know of any of his ideas/claims/patents/inventions or whatever, feel free to at least post the idea here, and if you feel obliged, give it a go in an 'ible. Cheers, and good luck!

Idea For Workshop Addition? Answered

I recently relocated my electronics table in my workshop and I am currently wondering what to do with all the free space. I am leaning towards a DIY CNC router, but I also might want a welding table. A lathe would also be nice. But my question is simple "What do I put in a 3' by 5' space?" I also don't want to spend 3K on some machinery that is seldom used.

A 3d model idea

This is an idea that I had for the Make it real challenge. Though I didn't end up taking this path I would love to see it be completed. It goes as follows. >> Make a spherically shaped skull with all of the innards of an actual skull. >> 3d Print it using medial grade materials (Realism) >> Skull baseball :D

Anti Gravity Idea...

OK I had this idea. I was online and thought up this idea for an anti gravity machine. This is it: use extremely static negatively charged materials for anti gravity. It could work the same way lightning clouds do. The base of the cloud is negatively charged and the ground become positively charged. Now if the material of the anti gravity "thing" is charged with static electricity, wouldn't it repel the ground? Now I am by far no expert in any of this...I just thought it up. What do you guys think?

Prop-Gun idea

I don't have that much confidence in getting this to work, but as an idea I thought I'd share it: I have a concept of a rotating-barrel automatic-chain-gun, that I can do no problem. BUT, to simulate muzzle-flash, I'm thinking of feeding butane/air down the barrels (blow-lamp type device) and igniting it. Initially, I think of slip-rings or similar and a camera-flash unit for ignition, motor drive on the barrels. Any advice? L

Revolutionary Pen Idea

This morning I had an idea. Last night I was dissassembling a huge bagful of insulin pumps (my cousin is a diabetic and he uses them, cleans them, and gives them to me to take the guts out of them) and in them I keep the springs, casing, and insulin resevoirs... (I ALWAYS throw those horrid needles away; I don't want to get stuck with one) I had an idea looking at the resevoirs... I wanted an ink pen that could write/draw in ANY color ink with the turn of a dial, adjustment of a slide, etc.. anyway, I have about fifty of these resevoir things (they have little pistons in them) and I was curious if there was a way to reach my goal. Should I use red, blue, yellow ink, or should I use magenta, cyan, and yallow? Do I have to make the inks myself, or could I drain them from printer cartriges? Should I use only primary colors, or secondary colors as well?

Good science idea

Hi, could someone make an app that, maybe uses a similar technology, to be able to identify plants, animals, and fungi? You could make it into a database where the users of the app put in the information, much like Wikipedia, so its ever evolving. I'd really like to be able, in my wood travels, to take my non existing iphone, and scan an organism with it and know all about it. I feel that that would be awesome.

Simple Zapper Idea

I have learned about electricity in Physics class and that to up the voltage of a given source there has to be an alteration in the amount of turns of wire around some magnets. BUT... is it possible to do this same thing in my home on a smaller scale by wrapping wires around some of my powerful earth magnets? The reason for asking is that I want to increase the current flow so that it starts zapping when the wire ends come near, also I want to create a ground based bug zapper for fun that will allow the zap to travel through water (shallow puddles). Sorry if I'm missing some law of physics that renders this impossible for me but I'm not taking the advanced course for science and we only touched on  the topic electricity.

Construction ideas for this concept?

Recently, I have been working on a gas 'vaporizer' that evaporates gas before being fed into an engine. During my short-term experiment, I found that this saves ~70% (+-20% for crudity of measurement.) This works because the vapors will burn more thoroughly and cleanly, leading to higher apparent efficiency. Below is a basic diagram of how the system works. You can see there is a container that is half-full with gas, and a hose goes down with many small holes. As the engine's compression draws a vacuum on the container, air will come up through the holes. As it rises, the gas-air surface area rises dramatically, leading to the vaporization of gas. To further increase the surface area, I also added a felt liner on the inside to allow the gas liquid to rise and evaporate. The final mixture ends up very rich, so to compensate, a 'T' fitting has been added to allow air to mix in with the vapors/fumes. Some valves have also been added to control the air inlet (similar to a 'choke') and the amount fed to the engine (similar to a throttle. In fact, it is possible to use the original throttle or choke as a throttle on the carburetor on my tractor!) The problem is: My original design utilized a plastic folgers coffee can, and the flimsy plastic top was hot glued to a thicker plastic cutout for strength and support. Since most glues will dissolve in gasoline, including hot glue, it could not be used. most did not hold anyway. I also tried JP weld plastic cement and it did not hold at all. I had to trash this build. I did, however, get enough use to run the tractor for several minutes while testing gas use. I found that the tractor used nearly twice as much simply running on gas than the fumes. I did not have the float valve and electric pump hooked up with the prototype. Also the 3/4in housing I used may be a bit constrictive and also seems to get slightly damaged by the gas. It will not be a long-term solution.  So I need to redesign the project, and I am thinking of using a 1-3 gallon bucket that is sealed or a gas tank. I need good almost air-tight seals on everything. I am asking for any ideas related to the construction of this device and any tips you may have.

Why are instructables made before the beginning of contest not eligible for entry?

I was just wondering why instructables made prior to a contest can't be entered. I have several instructables that I wish to enter, but this rule prohibits me from doing so. Is there a way to re-publish an instructable in order to enter it? I was wondering if a staff member or someone else knew the answer to this question, as I have the feeling that more people wish this rule was not in place. Thanks for any feedback.

Ideas for a paint can holder?

I am strong enough to carry 10 lbs each arm, but the handles on these cans are really terrible. It's just a metal wire. Anyone got any ideas to make a reusable grip to carry these cans? Ownership of ideas after a contest? Answered

If you submit your idea in an instructables contest, does the idea-owner remain the idea-owner, or do you give the organizing party (or sponsor) the right to commercially exploit you design? Also, can you enter with a design that's also (already) commercially sold (by yourself as the idea-owner)? Thanks! Jan

New Vacuum Pump Idea

I have a new idea about a new type of positive displacement vacuum pump.  Its of the piston variety, but instead of a one way valve which doesn't work when the pressure gets low enough, another piston is used to act as a valve switching between the vessel to be evacuated (when the main piston is pulling a vaccum) and the atmosphere (when the piston pushes the air evacuated out). This solves the one way valve problem.  Could this pull a much lower vacuum?  I need a fairly strong vacuum, but I don't want to have to build/buy a turbomolecular pump. Also, i have a metal lathe, that's why i'm going with the piston variety.

Building ideas for a onstage train? Answered

My high school is doing Hello Dolly and if possiblelwould like a train to be brought on stage, does anyone have ideas on how to do that? I have a couple but I'm having trouble bring all of it to one idea. I had an idea you can make hand turnable axles and gears for the wheels, other stuff for the smokestack, I was thinking maybe corflute for the body, but its really just chaos in my head right now. Any suggestions?  It needs to be fairly lightweight.  It would be nice to have workable wheels  And not a real smokestack obviously but the appearance of smoke and a whistle Maybe a back platform if at all possible that Dolly could jump on... Our stage is small. It has no special things about it and its roughly 20 by 30 feet. There are two backstage wings that are really just small hallways that let out into the audience, and those are about 20 feet long.  Our plays are all financed by the drama teacher herself so the less expensive the better as well.  If nothing comes up thats ok too. We have an alternative that can be used.

Any ideas for lightweight chainlink?

I'm building a project where two stepper motors control the exact position of a pointer (over a map). I need the pointer to be hanging from the two stepper motors, with the extra chain (or string, if that'd be better) hanging down the other side, so the entire contraption will look like a big 'M' (where the tops are the motors and the middle is the pointer) Because I need to control exact positions I think the best plan will be to have the two stepper motors fitted with spur gears and use thin bike chain over them to move the pointer. Bike chain would be good, except that it's too thick (it'd obscure the map too much in my opinion) and might be too heavy (there'll be ~3m of the stuff on either side). So, my question is: does anyone have any good ideas for reasonably lightweight chainlink (or some other non-slip linkage) and where I could by it (preferably here in the UK)?

An idea for an alternative cloth wringer

I'm thinking about a new design for a cloth wringer like function. A product that will squeeze your cloth from water. Not pointing out any imperfections from a generic cloth wringer shown in the first picture but its just a thought of designing a new one since some say that the current mechanism of a cloth wringer doesn't do the job effectively or there is a separate need for a bucket for it to be attached. Anyway, the design I'm thinking of is to solve any problems that is experienced by a normal cloth wringer.I'm thinking of a new design that would include a tube that would let you insert your desired cloth and a separate cloth absorber that would absorb the water when you squeeze the tube. A picture of a tube would look like the second picture (taken from the internet, youtube aa product called "Easy Squeezy" by Vitility). However its mechanism isn't the same as the idea I have but its physical appearance is kind of the same. I can't make a new one since I still don't know how it would look like based on the mechanism I have in mind. The Easy Squeezer's mechanism includes two separate tubes and you'll need to insert your cloth inside the inner tube and close it by another tube. Then you'll need to apply a force directly into the tube so you'll be able to squeeze out the water from your cloth. As shown from the youtube demonstration video (Link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--tHZRMjk3Q)Thus, an idea came up and the mechanism I have in mind is you'll need the tubes just like from the "Easy Squeezer" and a separate absorbing cloth (preferrably a microfiber one). Then, you'll need to roll your wet cloth along with the microfiber cloth and insert it into the tube. After you've inserted the two rolled clothes into the tubes the mechanism would allow you to create a twisting force into the tubes and ultimately squeeze most of the water from the wet cloth while preserving an uncreased cloth. Which is illustrated from the fourtth picture. Generally, you can do the twisting yourself even without the tubes but it would take a great effort to squeeze and make it a tedious job when you're going to do it for a large amount of wet clothes. The mechanism I have in mind is for the tubes' ability to translate a larger torque (or twisting moment) into the tubes while only having to exert little force. However, the problem is I don't know how to start in the design. Any ideas and suggestions on how to improve?

Looking for ideas for a synesthetic exploration project!

I have a project I'm working on, the purpose of which is to create a kind of synthetic synesthesia by taking the information about different people normally interpreted by one sensory system, and transform the way in which the information is presented, such that it is being interpreted through a different sensory system. The most important thing to me is that there is some kind of legitimate scientific basis for the way in which the information is gathered and then reinterpreted. So, for instance, one iteration of this project that I've done was, using litmus papers, I determined the pH of various people's saliva. I then took photos of each individual and also scanned each strip of litmus paper; I then color tinted each photo with the color from their litmus strip, and thus, one could "see" what that person tasted like. What I'm looking for are ideas for sensory data collection. Or, really, even just data collection in general. I'm an artist by trade, and an amateur scientist by interest and inclination, so figuring out ways in which to reinterpret the data isn't something that I need as much help with. Particularly, I'm really stumped when it comes to measuring anything having to do with smell, and in specific, how to measure a given person's ability to detect smells (for instance, quantifying the extent of someone's hyperosmia). I know olfactometers and electronic noses exist, but have no idea as to how they work or how to get my hands on one w/ an art student budget. ;P I got the idea to ask around here for suggestions after stumbling across this instructable for measuring muscle sounds. Thanks for any help or advice you might be able to provide, and I hope you have a very lovely day! =D

Idea for eccentric rotational sealed couple.

I had this idea trying to seal this gaddamned ethanol system. (The vaseline grease gasket works perfectly as long as the shaft doesn't move, after ten minutes of rotation, it starts leaking)For the sake of expedience I'm currently going with a different option, but Ithink this one's actually better and will come back to it when I getthe chance.I don't know how self explanatory the animation is, but basically itconverts rotation into eccentric rotation/motion and then back again.Since the circular housing between the two shafts isn't spinning assuch, it can be sealed with a rubber sleeve. The system is thereforcompletely sealed. I've tried it and it does work, with lowresistance, but tends to wobble a little and the two shafts can getout of phase. I think both these problems can be solved by having two'outrigger' rollers, rather than one as in the animation.Link to animation that hasn't been messed up by instructables resizing it:http://sugarandfat.info/eccentric_couple1.gif

Ideas anyone? Making electric coals

Hi guys, girls 'n robots! I intend to build an electric coal (for my hookah) and I need advice from all you electronic dudes and dudettes! If I use nichrome what length and gauge should I use to achieve the following Specs: 1.  12 V power supply  OR 220 VAC (South Africa) 2. Minimum 400 Celsius / 700 Fahrenheit 3. Preferably 600 C / 1112 F The element will be wrapped around a "doughnut" which I will fabricate from heat resistant cement, it will be +/- 2 inches diameter with an inner diameter of about 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch thick, therefore keep in mind that the nichrome must be able to heat all that ceramic. If, during my testing, the nichrome expands sufficiently to short out then I'll cut grooves in the "doughnut" to keep them in their places. In the image orange represents nichrome wire ONTOP of the "doughnut" while yellow is BELOW I am in no way adept at electrickery. As a side note of lesser importance, any ideas on building a circuit to add a dimmer or potentiometer to the mix to regulate the temperature? Thanks in advance!

Ideas for restoring a steamer trunk on a budget?

I acquired this great steamer trunk today with the intent of turning it into a coffee table/storage trunk for my growing collection of jadeite glassware.  However, I was so excited about finding it that I didn't inspect it as closely as I should have, and as a result, I've now got a very rusty steamer trunk on my hands - in some places the rust got so bad that it ate through the metal entirely, showing the wood beneath.   Now, as a college student, I simply just don't have the budget to get it professionally restored, and I'm okay with that; I'm looking at it as more of a stopgap than an investment.  But, I was wondering if there was something else I could do to fix it up?  I considered stripping off the remaining tin sheeting and using a rust-stopper on the hinges, etc, priming the exposed wood, and then simply painting over the entire thing. Any suggestions, tips, etc, are very much appreciated!

Bike conversion ideas for a semi-noob

Having just rescued my nice GT from my parents' place, my old junker bike is now surplus to requirements. (I like to have a "spare" bike, but now I have three bikes it's literally a fifth wheel. And sixth.)I've wanted to build an electric bike or a recumbent for a long time, but despite fiddling with bikes for a while I'm still just a competent novice. A competent novice with very limited tools, in fact. Therefore I'm looking for a project like this uber-simple electric-assist (incomplete) or the no-weld recumbent. If anyone knows of any other projects like these, I'd like to see them.Pictures of the bike to follow- it's a fairly generic short-frame mountain bike, probably intended for dirt jumping as it's got a short geometry, thick downtube and a low seat/short seat tube. The front fork is a "suspension" fork with about 1" of travel and too much preload to be any use on roads, everything else is standard.

I came across several steel plates, 2 stees blocks, and an alumanum block any ideas on what i could build with these?

The demintions of the steel plates are roughly as follows. 6"x9.75"x0.5in I also has a 3/4" hole drilled about 1 1/4" from the top. The next plate is about 3"x16.25"x3/4" it too has a hole that's 1" in dimater and 1 inch from the top. The next plate is really beat up but it's about 5.5"x4"x1/2" it has no holes. The next plate is 9"x2.25"x3/4" it has 3 holes the first one is 1.5" in diamiter and about 1.5" from the top the 2nd and 3rd holes are about 1" in diamiter and about 6.25" and 8" from the top. The next sheet is slightly bent somehow but its about 8.75"x3.5"x.5" it has 2 rows of holes each measuring 3/4" and the rows are 1.75" apart, there are 5 holes in each row and each one is 1.25" from the next the rows start 1.5" from the edge. That piece was hard to describe and I proboly didn't do a great job but now were on to the Blocks. The first block is 3.5"x2.5"x2" and has 2 holes on the 3.5"x2" sides that are 1" is diameter 1/2" from the sides and 2" apart. The next block is 8"x3.75"x3.75" with 2 holes. The hole are on the one of the 8"x3.75" sides and are 3/4" in diameter there 1" From the closest 2" side and centered (just as the holes are unless otherwise stated). And the aluminum block is 11.75"x2.5"x1.5" with no holes. If you guys thing of anything cool or useful I could build with these it would be much appreciated.
