Introduction: Bake-Free Ice Cream Pie: Embedded With Pi

At school we were going to have Pi Day pie parties, and I volunteered to bring something in. Then the Pi Day Pie Contest came up, and I knew I would have to try something new for the contest. Coincidentally, my parents work at a Dairy Queen.

Dairy Queen=Ice Cream.

And coupled with the idea of embedding Pi within the pie, this ice cream pie was created.

The pie is really simple to make, and if you're using store-bought crust that would make this a bake-free pie. Perfect for baking n00bs.

Step 1: Materials N' Stuff

Here's what I used:

Graham Cracker Crust (You can make the crust yourself if you want, but I was running low on time)
Ice Cream (Soft Serve)
Cake Crunch (kinda like crumbly Oreos)
Piping Gel

Now, I know that VERY few people have an ice cream machine, or cake crunch (which I'm sure many are puzzled about), or are willing to go buy decorating piping gel. SO the best alternatives (in order) would be a store bought tub of ice cream, Oreos crushed to bits, and whatever you want to use to decorate.

Oh, and I almost forgot. You're going to need to carve trenches into the ice cream later, and I used two hand-pump heads for it so that the pi symbol would have a curve at the end. Use anything for this as long as it's clean and you don't mind using it.

Step 2: Fill in the Pie

One of the simplest steps. Take your ice cream and fill in the pie. Nice and simple.

Also, just so it's a bit easier later, smooth over the top with something.

Step 3: Dig the Trenches and Fill Them

Take your digging utensil of choice and dig a trench, either closer to the middle or closer to the outside (check the pictures). Only do ONE at a time, and then do the other after filling.

Once the trench has been dug, fill it in with your filling of choice; in this case, cake crunch. Pat it down CAREFULLY so it's solid. Then repeat on the other one.

Step 4: Top Layer

Once those steps are done place a layer of filling material (cake crunch) on top of the pie. Now, I think I made it too wide, so you may want to keep it a little shorter to match the proportions of the pi symbol. Pat it down.

Step 5: MORE ICE CREAM!!!

...a bit self explanatory, don't you think?

Anyway, just put more ice cream on top of your filler. Cover it up, and smooth it out for decorating.

Step 6: Decorate!

Now, go ahead and decorate it! You can do whatever you like, but I used piping gel and drew a pi symbol in the middle. Then I drew a circle around it and wrote as many digits of pi as I can around it. The original plan was to do a spiral, but it's actually pretty hard. So I drew another circle, wrote more digits of pi but starting back from 3.14. Why? Just because. XD

Anyway, I did this a few times and that's it!

Step 7: A Few Tips...

While making this, there are a few things you should note.

1. Try to freeze this in between steps. This would help when decorating and other stuff because the ice cream will stay firm and not get all runny.

2. Make sure you have a clear understanding of how the pi symbol looks. Then plot from there. I thought the angle would have worked, but it looks a bit funky... XP

3. HAVE FUN. Cause that's what it's all about, right?
