Introduction: Boomerang, I Made It at Techshop, Chandler

Boomerangs are some old school fun. They take a little skill to shape and throw them so they come back but they are a lot of fun. Every friend I take out to throw them ends up with a sore arm because they just can't stop until they get it right.

I made several boomerangs at Techshop, Chandler recently. One I cut out on the computer controlled CNC Shopbot router, the others I cut out on the laser and there several designs on the laser cut adobe illustrator .ai file attached to this instructable.

After you cut them out, you just need to spend some time to shape them by sanding them with a sander or sanding block. Shaping the boomerang isn't really that hard, you basically just sand the blades like airplane wings and try to get them to lift. When you throw it, you tilt the boomerang quite a bit to the side and it causes it to turn. That's really all there is to it with some practice and taking the wind into account. You will have a lot of fun with them and there are lots of references out there for shaping and tuning techniques to get them to do what you want.
