Introduction: Carve Your Own Personalized State Sign

About: 18 - Senior - Maker

In this instructable I will show you how to make your own personalized state sign.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

Materials:

  • Reclaimed wood
  • Carbon Paper
  • Printout of a state

Tools:

  • Hammer
  • Pencil
  • Chisels
  • Scroll, jig, or band saw

Step 2: Transferring the State Onto Wood

Find the cleanest spot on your wood and lay a piece of carbon paper down on it. Now place your printout over it and trace the state with a pencil. Repeat this with any logo that you choose to do.

Step 3: Carving

You can now begin carving. I started with the outline of the state and just chiseled the wood away. The logo was much more detailed and I didn't want to screw it up since this was my only piece of wood so I used a small swiss army knife to carve it out.

Step 4: Cutting

Take your scroll saw and cut out the sign, I left a half inch border around it but you don't have to do the same.

Step 5: Thoughts

I spent about 2 hours on this and am happy with the results. Although, it's a bit small so i'm probably just going to sit it on my desk instead of hanging it. I really love the old/rustic look of it and will probably try another on a larger scale.
