Introduction: Colombian Arepas

About: Yes. Citizen of heaven. John 3:16.

I have cousins that were missionaries in Colombia for around 14 years, whenever they came to visit my family in the states, they would make these delicious Arepas that are very common in Colombia for us. They are super simple to make and are incredibly tasty. These are a perfect breakfast to make in a pinch when you haven't gone food shopping for a few weeks and just need one more meal to get you through the day! They'll also totally be a hit with the kids with a little honey or jam!

Supplies

Materials:

Bowl

Spoon

Stove

Frying pan

Rolling pin

Cling/Ceramic wrap

Ingredients:

2 Cups Arepa Flour (or corn flour)

2 Cups water

1/8 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

1 tablespoon butter

Cooking oil or butter (for frying)

Honey, Syrup, jam, ground beef or sausage (recommended sides)

Step 1: Mixing Things Up!

To start mix together flour and salt, then put your water in the microwave for 2 minutes or simmer over stove top. while you water is heating mix and butter with your flour mixture. Stir flour mixture. Slowly add the hot water, melting the butter.

Step 2: Picture Perfect Shape

To form you Arepas lay down a rectangle of cling/ceramic wrap on a counter top or plate, place a ball of dough about 3 - 3 1/2 tablespoons in size on the far right or left side, then fold the empty side on top of the ball. Use a rolling pin to make it as flat as you wish.

Step 3: Frying Away!

Put your stove top at medium to high heat. Put your oil or butter onto the pan, then place your Arepas on the oiled pan. Flip every 2 minutes. Fry the Arepas until they're golden brown on the outside.

Step 4: Tips and Tricks

I can say pretty confidently that these are going to be a hit with any kid, but if you want this breakfast to be something your kids are begging on their knees for try putting some honey, syrup, or jam on top of them. For a more sustaining meal these are also good with ground beef or sausage. I hope you can all benefit from this recipe. See you in my next Instructable!!
